~Lucas POV~
The silence in the room pressed down like a heavy fog as Matteo's voice broke it first.
"So what do we do now?"
His question was sharp, but his eyes were restless, pacing the floor as though the answer might be hidden in the tiles under our feet.
"Nothing," I said, my tone calm, though inside me a storm raged because we don't know the people Annalyn killed.
"Nothing?" He turned to me, incredulous. "You mean we just leave her in their hands? Leave her alone with the humans? Lucas, have you forgotten she is our mate?"
The word mate struck a sore point in my chest, I exhaled slowly, pressing my fingers against my forehead.
"You were the one who said she might not be," I reminded him quietly. "Don't twist it now."
Matteo's jaw clenched. "Even if she isn't, that doesn't mean we should leave her to them! Do you hear yourself?"
