Inside the interrogation room.
"Dino Cavane, your accomplice has confessed to your crimes. Confess and you'll be treated with leniency; resist and you'll be treated with severity. Tell us where the Maple Leaf gold coins are hidden! We will consider reducing your sentence!"
Inspector Megure tirelessly tried to persuade him to reveal the location of the loot. However, Dino Cavane remained silent from beginning to end. He was waiting for the embassy to extradite him back to Italy for his prison sentence. If he went back, he could use the location of the gold coins as a bargaining chip to have someone break him out of prison. If he confessed now, he would have no leverage left and would truly rot in jail. He knew very well what choice to make.
In the observation room, Ninzaburo Shiratori said wearily, "It's been three hours of continuous interrogation, and he hasn't said a word. He's quite resolute!"
"Tell me about it," Miwako Sato said, crossing her arms, not holding out much hope. "I think we should just give up. Let the embassy extradite him tomorrow."
Shiratori said, "I'm just afraid he'll be snatched by someone else during the extradition process."
"That's true, it's been so chaotic lately," Sato nodded in agreement. "We're talking about 15,000 Maple Leaf gold coins, worth a full 600 million yen! Many desperate people would definitely take the risk for that kind of money."
As they were chatting, the door to the observation room opened. Sato and Shiratori instinctively looked over.
"Um, you two..." Akemi opened the door and was about to ask "Do you want some coffee?" when she saw Miwako Sato. She panicked. Fortunately, Shiraishi E's voice came through the earpiece, urging her on. Akemi snapped back to reality and quickly said, "You two... would you like some coffee?"
"One for me, please," Shiratori glanced at Akemi and then turned his attention back to the interrogation room.
"One for me too, please..." Sato started, then paused and changed her mind. "Actually, never mind, I'll go to the break room and make some tea myself! If I drink any more coffee, I probably won't be able to sleep tonight." With that, she left the observation room.
Akemi was flustered, but before she left, she managed to see Dino Cavane. He was in this interrogation room! The problem now was... she couldn't leave and had to follow Sato to the break room. To prevent Sato from seeing her face, Akemi deliberately lagged a few steps behind.
However, Sato turned around and slowed her pace. "Have we met before? I feel like I've seen you somewhere." Her brow furrowed as she tried to recall where she had seen her.
"Well..." Akemi panicked, her mind went blank. She didn't know how to answer and was afraid of saying the wrong thing. Fortunately, Shiraishi E's voice came through her earpiece: "Say you're from the Cybercrime Division and you delivered documents to Officer Sato before."
Akemi quickly replied, "I... I'm from the Cybercrime Division. I've delivered documents to you a few times before, Officer Sato."
"Ah... I'm sorry, I forgot," Sato said with an apologetic expression. She looked closely at the ID on her chest. "Officer Hirota, right... I'll remember you now!"
Oh no, please don't remember me. I really don't want to be remembered by you... Akemi wailed inwardly.
"How are things in your Cybercrime Division? Is the work tiring?" Sato, seeing that she was quite shy, started a conversation.
"Mmm... it's quite tiring and busy," Akemi said, following Shiraishi E's instructions. "I'm running around all day, working late into the night, not getting enough sleep. I've been losing a lot of hair lately."
"Tell me about it. Sigh, working overtime to the point of a nervous breakdown, I feel like my memory is getting worse. Sometimes I can't even remember things that happened half a month ago," Sato said empathetically. "The longest I've gone without going home was a week. I just stayed in a nearby hotel. I used my commuting time to sleep."
Hearing this, Akemi couldn't help but exclaim, "Huh? Police work is that busy?" After saying that, she realized she might have slipped up and quickly added, "I'm new, I didn't know it was so tough..."
"You'll find out later," Sato said. She then suddenly remembered something and stopped. "Ah! Right, it's been so long... has Miss Fujiwara not come to find me yet?" She said apologetically to Akemi, "Sorry, Officer Hirota. Could I trouble you to make me a cup of tea and bring it to the reception room?"
"Mmm, okay," Akemi lowered her head guiltily.
"Then I'll have to trouble you," Sato said her thanks and headed to the reception room.
After Sato left, Akemi also quickened her pace and headed back to the restroom. After retrieving her bag from the restroom, she quickly left the police headquarters.
Coming out of the police headquarters building, Akemi finally let out a sigh of relief. She then realized her back was drenched in sweat, and her palms were clammy. "Mr. Azu, I'm out," she quickly reported.
Shiraishi E, at the entrance of the police headquarters, saw Akemi's hurried departure. "I know... you go back to the car first. Leave the rest to me." After saying that, he swaggered towards the main entrance of the police headquarters.
Shiraishi E was wearing a mask, so he wasn't worried about being caught on surveillance. At the main entrance, he reached into his pocket and pressed a button. The remote bomb inside the power supply box was detonated!
BOOM!!!
The explosion rang out, and a flash of light followed. The police headquarters' power system was destroyed, and the lights instantly went out. Shiraishi E quickly put on his thermal imaging night vision goggles and ran full speed into the police headquarters.
The sudden power outage made everyone in the police headquarters instinctively stop and look around in confusion. This gave Shiraishi E a huge advantage. He easily bypassed the crowd, following the route to the interrogation room that he had seen through Akemi's camera glasses.
After running for a few minutes, Shiraishi E quickly arrived outside Dino Cavane's interrogation room. He opened the door with a click and found Megure and Takagi inside.
Shiraishi E, slightly out of breath, said, "Inspector Megure, Superintendent Matsumoto wants to see you."
"He wants to see me? But isn't Superintendent Matsumoto already off duty?" Megure was very puzzled.
Shiraishi E walked behind him, covered his nose with a handkerchief soaked in ether, and held him with his other hand. "He just came back!"
"Mmph, mmph!!" Megure realized something was wrong when his nose was covered. But by the time he reacted, it was too late. The moment his nose was covered, he had instinctively inhaled a few breaths of ether and passed out in less than three seconds.
"What was that noise?" Takagi instinctively turned his head towards Megure's position, but it was pitch black, and he couldn't see anything.
"Oh, the Inspector just bumped his toe when he stood up," Shiraishi E said. Seeing that Megure was no longer struggling, he turned his attention to Takagi.
Just as Takagi was about to ask about Megure, he suddenly felt his nose and mouth being covered. He was shocked! However, a low voice came from his side: "Breathe deeply... it's normal to feel dizzy."
But after taking two breaths, Takagi realized something was wrong. By the time he wanted to struggle, it was too late. His head tilted to the side, and he passed out.
