"Tsk, missed?"
Looking through the sniper scope, Shiraishi E saw no blood spurt out and realized Chianti hadn't been hit. He felt a sense of regret. He knew his current situation was like his brain knew what to do, but his hands and feet couldn't quite keep up. He had plenty of theoretical knowledge but lacked practical combat experience. He would have to find time to train more.
With this thought, he shifted his aim to where Korn was. The man had already fled. Seeing this, Shiraishi E didn't linger and quickly left.
A black Porsche 356A was driving away from Tropical Land. The atmosphere inside the car was unusually silent. None of the four members of the organization had expected the operation to take such a turn.
"I was almost killed... Ah! It hurts so much! I feel like my bones are broken!" Vodka touched the spot on his chest where he'd been shot and immediately winced in pain.
"You only got hit a few times. What are you crying about?" Chianti, in the passenger seat, looked at Vodka with disdain. "Gin got hit so many more times and didn't even make a sound!"
Vodka couldn't argue. He turned to look at the grim-faced Gin and asked with concern, "Aniki, are you okay?"
Gin didn't speak, but his eyes glinted with murderous intent.
"You're so stupid, Gin doesn't want to talk to you," Chianti sneered. "You're wailing after a few shots, he took more than a dozen. How could he be okay?" She turned to look at Gin, clicking her tongue. "But you're amazing, Gin. So many shots and none of them hit a vital spot. You'll probably be laid up in bed for a month or two, though!!"
"..." Gin remained silent. He also felt he had been lucky this time. Recalling the events now, a chill ran down his spine. He felt like he had walked along the edge of death. A submachine gun, a shotgun, grenades, and a sniper rifle... The opponent had brought so many weapons. He had almost not made it back.
The most crucial thing was that Gin had never even seen the opponent's face. His brow furrowed at the thought, wondering where the Nisan-kai had found such a person.
"But what's the use of him being so skilled?" Chianti, seeing the others silent, didn't mind and muttered to herself, "I took out that old geezer... He probably won't have an easy time explaining that when he gets back. All that effort for nothing in the end! Hahahaha!!"
Although Chianti felt she had been bested, the thought that the opponent hadn't fared much better made her burst out laughing. Her words managed to lift the group's morale a bit.
Vodka said fiercely, "That bastard, how dare he play tricks? Aniki! We have to teach them a lesson! Otherwise, they'll think our organization is made of mud!" He looked at Gin.
"We'll talk about it when we get back," Gin said coldly. He had no intention of letting this go. If he didn't retaliate properly, what would these people think of him? If morale fell, the team would be difficult to lead.
As for Kudo Shinichi, no one present gave a second thought to the high school student.
In a hospital room, Shinichi woke up. He stared blankly at the ceiling, then gradually remembered what had happened. Right, I went to spy on someone's transaction and got ambushed. Then there was a gunfight... and then I passed out. I don't know what happened after that.
Just then, he heard Shiraishi E's voice: "Shinichi's awake."
Shinichi turned his head and saw Ran and Sonoko get up from their chairs and walk over.
"Shinichi, are you okay?" Ran's eyes were full of worry.
"You! Didn't you say you were going to the restroom? How did you end up at the scene again?" Sonoko said irritably. "When we found out you were there, you really scared us! It was like a war zone over there, bullets everywhere, and dead people!" As Ran spoke, her face paled.
"Do you know that when the police found you, there was a dense line of bullets right next to you?" Sonoko scolded, uncharacteristically angry. "You were almost killed!!"
"..."
Faced with the scolding from Ran and Sonoko, Shinichi lowered his head guiltily and admitted his mistake. "I'm sorry, this time it was my fault. I shouldn't have gone secretly." He also understood that his reckless actions had nearly gotten him killed. Thinking back, he was also quite scared.
Shinichi said solemnly, "I swear, I will never do anything so risky again!!"
Seeing his sincere expression, Ran and Sonoko believed him and didn't pursue the matter further. Shiraishi E, standing by, just smiled, not taking Shinichi's words seriously at all.
"Um... I'd like to talk to Shiraishi-kun alone," Shinichi said, embarrassed.
"Okay, then I'll go buy you a bottle of water," Ran nodded obediently and left the room.
"You two talk, I'll go with Ran!" Sonoko said and also left the room with Ran.
Once the door was closed, only Shiraishi E and Shinichi were left in the room.
Before Shinichi could figure out how to start, Shiraishi E spoke, "I don't believe a single word of the oath you just made to them!"
"Uh... you have that little faith in me?" Shinichi felt he was being underestimated.
"It's not that I don't have faith in you, it's that I know you too well," Shiraishi E looked at Shinichi. "Detectives are like sharks. Once they smell blood, they instinctively pounce. Nothing can stop them, not even themselves. This time is the best example!"
"..." Shinichi opened his mouth but couldn't refute. He changed the subject. "Shiraishi, you... you seem to smell like gunpowder. What's that about?"
Shiraishi E shrugged. "I fired too many shots. It's inevitable to have a bit of a gunpowder smell!"
"Are you admitting that you were the one shooting?" Shinichi was stunned, not expecting him to admit it so readily.
"What's there not to admit?" Shiraishi E said righteously. "If it weren't for me, you would have been beaten to death."
"Th-That's true," Shinichi couldn't argue. If it weren't for him showing up, he'd be lying in a cold morgue right now.
"Say thank you," Shiraishi E reminded him.
"Th-Thank you," Shinichi quickly expressed his gratitude. He paused for a moment, then couldn't help but ask, "Shiraishi-kun, why... were you there at that time? And with a gun."
"You don't know?" Shiraishi E didn't answer, instead asking a question back.
"I don't know. I was ambushed and passed out not long after," Shinichi shook his head, explaining his situation.
"You don't know?" Hearing this, Shiraishi E was relieved. Now he could spin any story he wanted.
