Tonight's moonlight was exceptionally bright and gentle. The liquid moonlight flowed through the gaps in the trees, landing on the grassy ground. Dotted with fireflies, it bathed the forest in a glow that made it seem like a fairy kingdom.
At this moment, Cang Ye, along with Morgan and Britomart, was walking along a forest path in the night, on their way to a fairy banquet. However, compared to Cang Ye's indifferent attitude, Britomart, who had also been asked to come, was very reluctant. After all, Morgan had not hidden her intentions; she knew who would be waiting for her there.
Normally, a child who has run away from home would miss their family after a while and hesitate about whether to go back and apologize. But Cang Ye could see that this logic did not apply to Britomart at all. This fairy knight had become much more cheerful since meeting him, and this reached its peak after she met the Fairy Queen Morgan. Going on adventures, making friends, finding a Fairy Queen to serve and obey her commands—apart from not confessing to her crush and becoming a couple, everything Britomart was doing and experiencing was highly similar to her mother's past experiences.
Other children might have thrown a tantrum and resisted, but for Britomart, who had idolized her mother since childhood and longed for the same adventure, her current life in Camelot, Britain, was pure bliss. (Though the reason Morgan always sent her on missions was so she wouldn't stick to Cang Ye whenever she had free time.)
So, when she learned that Morgan was going to attend the Fairy Queen's nocturne and that someone had specifically requested her presence, Britomart instantly understood what was going to happen.
To this, Cang Ye could only offer his silent sympathy.
However...
"Even if you're afraid to see your mother, you don't have to wear the Queen's Fortress, do you!" Cang Ye turned to look at the black Gundam deliberately lagging a little behind them, finally unable to hold back his吐槽 (tùcáo - sarcastic comment), speaking in a low voice.
The three of them were a strange sight. Morgan and he were dressed in black formal wear like a young master and lady heading to a ball. But Britomart, who should have been a vibrant and beautiful giant fairy girl, was instead clad in a hulking,狰狞 (zhēngníng - ferocious) black Gundam, looking less like she was going to an elegant banquet and more like a bodyguard or someone heading to war.
"Who said I'm afraid of my mother!" Britomart immediately became defensive at his words. She wanted to say something bold to refute him, but the thought of who she was about to meet made her tone falter. "I'm just... I'm just... never mind, I won't tell you. You'll understand anyway."
"Heh." Cang Ye replied with a cold laugh.
But considering he was the one who had brought the girl here and had become a semi-guardian to her after all this time, he knew he should offer some comfort. With this in mind, he said, "Don't worry too much. A mother is still a mother. She'll always love you. Just apologize properly, and it'll all blow over." He even patted her mecha arm reassuringly, not her shoulder because he couldn't reach.
But Britomart's reaction was unexpected. "You also think I should go back?" She looked down at him. Through the helmet, he couldn't see her eyes, but he could sense the dejection in her voice.
"You don't want to go back? Don't you miss home?" Cang Ye was taken aback. He had always thought of Britomart as a simple, good-natured girl with a bit of a rebellious streak, but who didn't seem to have any problems with her family based on her conversations. So why was she so unwilling to go back?
Thinking this, he asked her outright. But the girl fell silent and didn't answer.
Helpless, Cang Ye tried to explain the stakes. "People always have to go home, Britomart. Besides, the ether in Britain's air is very thin now. This will have a huge impact on you." He paused for a moment before continuing, "If you don't go back, your life will be in danger."
"What about you? What about you and Lady Morgan?" Britomart suddenly asked. This time, her tone softened slightly as she looked at him, as if hoping for an answer that would make her happy.
"Me?" Hearing her question, Cang Ye was stunned for a moment. After some thought, he understood what she meant. Morgan, as the ruler of the island, would not truly die as long as the island of Britain existed. As for him, he was also half-fairy. By the rules of the world, he did have the right to sink into the Inner Sea of the Planet and live in the Land of Fairies.
But would things really go so smoothly? The Glimmer of the Age of Gods that shone upon him was both a blessing and a curse. When that day comes, I will probably die, won't I?
He thought this but wouldn't say it out loud. He just patted her Gundam again and said, "We're different."
"But Lamorak, you could also..."
"What are you two chattering about? It's time to be quiet." Suddenly, Morgan's emotionless voice rang out. The Queen, dressed in a pure black formal gown, stopped walking and stood ahead of them. The hazy moonlight shone from behind her, making her still-beautiful face and perfect curves even more enchanting. But in the moonlight, Cang Ye could see a hint of displeasure on her face.
Both of them fell silent at once, and Britomart's unfinished words were swallowed back down.
"My apologies, my Queen," Cang Ye bowed to Morgan, his etiquette flawless.
"Hmph!" But Morgan didn't seem to buy it. She snorted lightly and turned to continue walking.
Cang Ye gave Britomart an apologetic smile and hurried after her.
Seeing him catch up, the cold expression on Morgan's face softened slightly, but she still maintained a lofty demeanor. Cang Ye just smiled faintly. He said nothing, simply walking quietly beside her.
Under the cover of their clothes, his hand found hers and clasped it. She made a symbolic attempt to pull away but eventually gave up, their hands intertwining tightly, fingers laced.
"Lamorak."
"I am here, Lady Morgan."
"Closer."
Behind them, Britomart walked with her head down, not noticing the interaction between her queen and the knight. She was lost in thought.
After another ten minutes of walking, they followed Morgan through an invisible magical barrier and finally arrived at the venue for the fairy nocturne. It was the same sacred lake where he and Morgan had first met, and also the birthplace of Morgan, the Queen of Camelot.
As the host of this banquet, Morgan was the last to arrive and had done no preparation, but she had provided the venue. That was enough. Because when the three of them crossed the magic barrier, they saw a scene under the moonlight: several beautiful, graceful, pointy-eared, golden-haired women sitting around a table and chairs formed from a large tree by the lake, drinking tea, eating pastries, and chatting happily. Around them fluttered many small fairies, some acting as attendants, others as fireflies, serving their queens. The scene was less a fairy nocturne and more a fairy tea party. The only difference was that it was night instead of afternoon, and the sun was replaced by the moon.
But even so, it didn't diminish the Fairy Queens' interest in the slightest. Morgan's arrival naturally drew their attention. The Queens all rose, and whether sincere or not, they all wore beautiful smiles to welcome her.
Morgan had no intention of making small talk with them and went straight to the head seat. Cang Ye and Britomart stood dutifully behind her.
However, one person, or rather, a half-human, half-fairy like himself, caught his attention. It was a woman with silver hair tied in a ponytail, holding a staff, dressed in a white formal short dress and high boots, with the appearance of a duke. At this moment, her gaze was sharp, and her face, which bore a seven-tenths resemblance to Britomart's, was like frost. From the moment they entered, her eyes had been fixed on the hulking 'Queen's Fortress.'
With such obvious features and expression, Cang Ye immediately recognized her as Britomart's mother, the first Fairy Knight of Pan-Human History, Britomart I.
"Looks like Britomart is in for it now." After silently praying for her, Cang Ye lowered his head and stopped observing his surroundings, instead listening intently to the conversation between Morgan and the other Queens.
After a round of meaningless small talk, and after Britomart I, with the permission of her queen and Morgan, dragged Britomart out of the Queen's Fortress and took her aside for a "lesson," the true purpose of the banquet was finally brought to the table.
Without any hesitation or probing, Morgan stated her purpose directly. "The time has come to take a side, ladies." Her fingers gently stroked the exquisitely crafted crystal cup, her deep blue eyes sweeping over everyone at the table, her tone calm.
"I want you to give me the Holy Sword of the Planet, Excalibur."
