I put the magazine on the table and took a deep breath.
I had painted the tiles with cyan colour, and now... I have cleaned the floor. The walls had all kinds of mould on it. First, I had to remove the mould, and then... I painted it. Forget about cleaning, only refurbishing the walls had worn me out.
The tiles are now... clean, at least. Although, they lack the lustre... I believe they look just fine.
All of a sudden, my stomach started growling. I haven't eaten a single thing since the morning. Well, time to eat something.
Opening the fridge, I took out some slices of bread. Yesterday, I had prepared them with strawberry jam. They are mouth-watering! Trust me, if you eat one... you will always crave for it. So, grab one and feast on it... or else, you will just regret it for missing such an opportunity.
Even in my past life, I had a sweet tooth. I really like eating sweets. But to be honest, I am a foodie.
I also poured me glass of milk. Should I eat some cashews? Yes, I should. I put some cashews on a plate, and a few snacks as well.
Putting them on the table, I took a seat and switched on the TV.
"Today we have found three bodies bludgeoned to death. It's so gruesome that we can't even show the pictures on our news channel. The victims were two omegas and one alpha. The family of three were brutally killed with a large object. The police had yet to find the murder object," said a young female anchor.
Great! More murder news! It's not like I haven't killed someone, right?
I drank some milk and put a few cashews into my mouth.
The images of the victims were shown.
The female was an alpha, and the male was an omega like his child. My eyes narrowed slightly as I observed the daughter's image. She looked happy... I mean, the family was a happy one. Then, why would someone do this?
To kill an entire family? For revenge? Or, maybe something else is there.
Another reporter entered the screen and said, "I am feeling sick. I can't believe someone can do something this macabre sense of crime. It's hideous! How can you kill an eight-year-old girl? How can someone do this? I really expect police to catch the murderer as soon as possible. Someone like that needs to put to justice."
The female anchor nodded. With an angry face, she said, "Yes, the murderer needs to pay for this monstrous act. But for now, the police have yet to find a clue. They haven't got a single clue to point their investigation in the right direction."
I turned off the TV and closed my eyes. This news... has killed my appetite.
Honestly, Rupert was indeed correct.
Humanity's insanity is boundless. In my previous world, or this world... nothing has really changed. But then again, Rupert was himself a human at one point of time. Becoming a monster, amplified his 'urges.'
That incident conceived a possibility in my mind. I wanted not to think mull this... yet, I can no longer restrict it. The idea has resurfaced by itself like a snake wrapping around its prey.
Is this related to that 'book?'
"Gretchen, is that book of yours behind this?" I whispered to myself. There was a gargantuan feasibility in this hunch. Although, it's a hunch... I can't just ignore this.
Suddenly, my phone started ringing. It was an unknown number. Even 'Mycall' wasn't showing the caller's ID.
Should I answer it?
Ah, fuck it. I am going to answer it.
"Hello. Who am I speaking with?" I asked in a polite tone.
"Oh, Alice! It's good to hear from you again." A familiar voice answered from the other side of the call. It was Mary.
Shit! I didn't know she would call me. I said, "Ah, Mary! I am... I am really sorry that I didn't show up for the date."
Mary chuckled at my words. She said, "It's fine. You must have been busy. Honestly, I was busy as well. You know how work is, right? Ignoring is not possible, and postponing it will make it more difficult to deal with."
"Yes, you are right. Work is... 'work.' You can never ignore it. And I have really tried it... but it was unsuccessful."
"Yeah... Alice, are you free?" asked Mary.
"I am... free," I answered.
"So, will you meet me? I mean, can we go for lunch?" Mary's voice was unsure, yet full of hope.
I sighed, "A 'date?' Now?"
"You can call it whatever you want. But a 'date' sounds good. Alice, I really know a great place. Considering the fact that you stood me up, I at least deserve some curtesy. So, please? We will have a great time, I promise you."
Damn! Mary really wants to go on a date with me. Should I go? It's not like I have some work or something. I am completely free. As for the house, I have 'renovated' it. And for that, I deserve a good price.
"Fine. Send me the details," I agreed.
"Great! Thank you for agreeing! I will send you the address within five minutes. We will have a great time." Mary's voice was too loud. She is really excited.
"Okay, Mary. I will be on time." With that, I cut the call and threw the phone on the table. This 'date' might serve as a distraction from all this. Besides, I like talking with her. She seems like a good person.
*Ding* It looks like she has sent the address.
