I stepped into my office before sunrise, ready to tackle the mountain of work ahead. The auditors had delivered their preliminary findings, and just as I suspected, Eddie's name was prominently featured in the list of potential fraudsters. No surprise there – I'd been watching him like a hawk for months.
After reviewing the sensitive documents, I powered down my laptop and secured it in my office safe. This information was dynamite, so I'd changed the combination yesterday and planned to take everything home with me tonight. In this game of corporate chess, information was my most valuable piece.
The morning flew by in a blur of meetings and calls. Around noon, Darren knocked on my door frame, leaning against it with his typical casual stance.
"You planning to work through lunch again? Because I'm staging an intervention if you are," he said, tapping his watch.
