Chapter 10 - Five of Cups

TING!

Daniel who was sitting behind his computer glanced at his phone which had suddenly lit up. He only glanced at it before looking back at his computer continued his mindless gameplay. A few minutes later he grabbed his phone and looked at the notification. It was a message from his friend Chris.

"Dude! Your parents died in a fire! The whole apartment complex burst up in flames!"

Daniel's lips twitched as he stared at the message. No one could tell what he was feeling at the moment.

...

July 12th, 1349.

It had just started to rain outside. Leon walked into the east borough underground market with his hands in his coat. Today he chose to wore an extra warm coat because of the surprising cold.

After walking around he eventually found Eli cooper's little tent and decided to approach it. The woman who was next to Eli's stand was also there. But the man who sold herbs was gone. At first Leon thought someone just probably took his spot while he wasn't here, but something told him there was something else at play.

"Where did the gentleman who was here previously go?"

There was another man sitting there selling charms and even some books on mysticism. He was quiet an unkempt man with messy black hair.

"He? Oh he died. Apparently some kind of pathogen killed him. Now i've taken over his place."

Leon glanced at charms, books and papers spread on the desk. His eyes looked at a particular paper. Then, in recognition he grabbed the paper and looked at it.

This is chinese!

"Excuse me but where did you get this from?" Leon had to ask. He never expected for there to be a fellow transmigrator like him!

"That? Its emperor Roselle's diary. Apparently it holds secret powers, but no one has been able to decipher it"

And neither will I... I can't speak a lick of chinese! Couldn't he have written it in English?! This probably contains important information too.

Leon criticised himself for not learning any other languages back home. In this world atleast he could speak Loenese and a bit of hermes and ancient hermes. In his previous life he could only speak english.

There's probably alot of serious stuff written in it too... he muttered inwardly. And after a few more moments of thinking he left the stall and left the vendor disappointed. He slowly approached Eli Cooper's tent and heard a voice come from inside.

"Come in~"

Leon walked inside and found a man in a cloak sitting behind a desk. He had handsome features and gray eyes. Infront of him was plethora of different divination tools. The inside of the tent was dark yet kind of comforting. Eli Cooper had a gentle honeyed voice.

His legs were crossed beneath the table and his eyelids fluttered.

Hmm...

Leon decided to take a seat and quickly asked the most important question.

"How much does this cost?"

Eli Cooper smiled and answered while leisurely leaning back.

"It's only 1 soli. What type of divination to do you need?"

Leon hadn't really thought about it too much until now. He scratched his cheek while pondering over and over until he made his choice ten seconds later.

"Tarot card divination. My past, present and future."

Eli Cooper smiled and quickly grabbed a stack of Tarot cards. He shuffled them and then set down three cards before Leon. The card on the left indicated the past, the middle card the present and the card on the right was the future.

Eli Cooper flipped over the first card which was a reversed fool. The Tarot card depicted a carefree man next to a cliff with a knapsack.

"Recklessness, naivety, carelessness." Eli recited before moving onto the middle card that represented the present.

The Lovers.

This Tarot card depicted two naked lovers with an angel in between them.

"Love, relationships, balance..."

This one sounds better...

And then came his future.

Eli Cooper slowly reached for the last card with a smile on his face. He was purposely being slow in order to add suspense. Finally he reached for the card and slowly flipped it over revealing what it was.

Five of cups!

This one depicted a robed man standing in the middle of a circle made of 5 cups. Leon held his breath and looked at Eli to see the man's reaction.

"Loss, disappointment, discontent."

What's with this damn luck?!

"Seriously? What's with this luck?" Leon spoke his mind which caused Eli to chuckle in return.

"Divination is not all powerful you know. Maybe there's an external power cursing you."

Don't say things like that...

"Did you know i was stalking you that day? And how did you know? And why is the demoness sect after you?" Leon finally asked the question he came here to ask.

He learned of the demoness sect from Charlotte. And he made the connection that the demoness sect was after Eli Cooper and gave a mission to Charlotte to stalk Eli. He made this connection because his boss had clearly nothing to do with Eli.

"Divination. Im a Seer after all." Eli gave a faint smile when he answered the first question. Then he continued. "As for the demoness sect, let's say i happened to play a dangerous game with a group of their members. And while playing this game I stole an item they possess. Does that answer your question?"

Could you be a little more vague? I just want to punch him.

"As a seer I also get a danger intuition. Paired with my divination capabilities I can escape alot of situations. Although the assassin pathway gets some pretty good anti-divination abilities later on. Thankfully i haven't come across any trouble. I often come down here to make an extra buck and maybe even hire a bodyguard."

Body guard huh? I think im good enough for now. I hope my powers as a Marauder are enough.

"You killed them?"

Eli just smiled at the question and Concealed his eyes and nose in the darkness. "No need to be so blunt, I put them to eternal sleep. Although, death isn't necessarily the end in the world of mysticism. So maybe temporary sleep is better."

The beyonder world does seem pretty weird after all.

Leon already knew how strange and dangerous this world is. One side of him wanted to leave while the other wanted to stay, and these two sides were fighting with eachother. One other thing that motivated him was leaving east borough, he was very tired of this place. But he couldn't see it happening any time soon, maybe in a year or so he could leave this hell hole.

Eli took out a small doll the size of 10 inches. Even though Leon knew nothing about dolls or puppets, the doll before him looked extremely realistic. It looked like a girl with the most beautiful face he has ever seen. She was wearing a red hood and a beautiful black dress. Leon's senses went off telling him this was a valuable item.

"they called it love puppet. Creative isn't it? If you couldn't tell, this item is a mystical item. It can cause the feelings of the surrounding people in a 10 meter range to heighten. If the feelings are love, lust or greed the effect is even stronger. You might fall in love with this doll or maybe you will get greedy enough to make stupid decisions. Of course it's currently sealed, otherwise this place wouldn't be as calm as it is right now."

Interesting, other than that revolver this is probably the only other mystical item I've seen.

"why are you telling me all this?" Leon couldn't help but ask this question. Why would Eli Cooper reveal such things after all?

Eli simply smiled and let out a audible sigh.

"I need your help with something. You are a thief, are you not? How about... a little robbery?"
