Buzz the wasp was a true hero. He flew back and forth, annoying the three sad ghosts. Every time he stung one of them, their sad, magical song would stop for a moment. This gave Lyra time to recover her strength.
"Alright, you spooky singers!" Ren shouted. "Your sad song is not very good when you have a buzzing fly in your face!"
He easily dodged an attack from one of the Maidens. Their attacks were slow and weak.
Ren had a new, funny idea. He gave a mental command to Buzz. 'Buzz, sting their faces!'
Buzz obeyed. He flew directly at the face of the nearest ghost. The ghost, who had been crying sadly, let out a surprised, high-pitched scream. It tried to hit Buzz with its ghostly hands, but Buzz was too fast. The other two ghosts looked at their friend. They were so surprised by this strange attack that they also stopped crying.
Lyra used this chance. With a loud yell, she charged forward. Her sword passed through the ghost's body. It did not cut, but it left a trail of bright energy. The ghost screamed in pain. Physical attacks could hurt them.
"Nice one, Lyra!" Ren cheered. He took out his own sword. "Alright, ladies! Let's get personal!"
He moved with his amazing speed. He did not try to kill them. He was having too much fun. He used his sharp, purple sword to give the ghosts a "haircut." He sliced off pieces of their long, flowing, ghostly hair. The venom from his sword made the ghost-hair dissolve into smoke.
The Weeping Maidens became very frustrated. Their sad cries turned into angry shouts. The sad magic in the air disappeared. It was replaced by angry magic, which was not as strong. One of the ghosts got so angry that it charged at Ren. Ren just stepped aside, and the ghost flew straight into a stone tomb. It got stuck halfway in the stone.
"You should control your anger," Ren said with a laugh. He then cut off another piece of its hair. The ghost was so angry, its scream was loud enough to break glass.
"Now I can move freely!" Lyra said. She ran to the angry ghost and hit it hard with her shield. The ghost was knocked back against the tomb again.
The three Weeping Maidens were now just angry, clumsy ghosts with bad haircuts. They were not scary anymore. Buzz continued to fly around their faces. Ren danced around them with his sword. Lyra hit them with her shield.
Finally, Ren decided to end it. He pushed his Sting of the Queen straight through the chest of the angriest Maiden. A bright light exploded from the ghost. It disappeared into nothing.
The other two Maidens saw this and let out a scream of pure fear. They turned and fled into the dark tombs, making scared, whimpering sounds.
The gorge was quiet again. But this time, the silence was broken by Ren's happy laughter. Buzz landed on his shoulder and made a happy, clicking sound.
"Well, that was easy," Ren said. "It seems that ghosts do not like bad hair days." He looked at Lyra and winked. "And Buzz, you are a true hero."
Lyra was tired, but she was laughing too. "The villagers warned us about a great sadness. They did not warn us that we could just annoy the ghosts until they ran away."
"It is all about finding the enemy's weakness," Ren said. "Now, let's see if that sad ghost dropped any sad treasures."
