Chapter 10 - Ode to the Future

While on her walk, Inferna and her guard took notice of the Ghost sparring in the Allen Park Training Ground. Curiosity got the better of them, and they ventured down the hill to watch this two o'clock in the morning sparring session. The Ghost was in a full sweat, practicing his weapon mastery on a holographically simulated program.

He'd plugged in his fight with the Head Guard from earlier and simulated every possible scenario. Inferna's guard, Obsian, was impressed that the Ghost wasn't exhausted. However, Inferna knew why he wasn't. His mind was racing, trying to make that rotting corpse pay for that girl's life all over again. His breathing was labored, but his movements were unlike anything Inferna had ever encountered. However, once the program ended, he turned, finally noticing his spectators. "I apologize for my rudeness, Chiefess. I did not know anyone was watching." Inferna laughed and shook her head. "No, no, I must be the one to apologize. We intruded on you." The Ghost nodded, towel-drying his hair, and once finished, he agreed to walk them back. As they walked back, Inferna got to asking the Ghost about his life, the city of Greater Ottawa. Naturally, the Ghost obliged her questions by regaling his war stories. Once he'd concluded, they had arrived at the hotel. The Ghost bowed and made his way to the Reddick Mansion, trying to catch some sleep before the meeting.

As the morning sun rose over Greater Ottawa, the Ghost drove his Autowa Model T Pickup to pick up Inferna and her two guards. Both the delegations had already been up earlier to get things prepared at the Greater Ottawa Courthouse. At first, Inferna and her guards wouldn't set foot near the strange contraption, having never seen an automobile. However, they decided to trust the Ghost. With a smile, he helped them into the car and unlatched the windshield open for some breeze. Currently, we're on the south side of Greater Ottawa. Walking, it would take us about an hour to get downtown. Allow me to show the power of Greater Ottawa's innovations!" The Ghost increased the fuel lever and adjusted the timing lever, causing the Autowa Pickup to shake and rumble. As he let off the brakes, the Autowa Pickup rumbled away from the Grand Hotel. Turning left off West McKinley Road, he shifted the Autowa into second gear with a grin appearing on his face.

The Autowa Pickup had its exhaust worked on, and the headers hadn't been fully connected yet. As the key lime-green pickup gained speed, it rumbled down State Street heading toward the inner city. The Ghost punched that fuel lever as high as it would go, matched the timing, and dropped the pickup into third gear. The Guards and Inferna were shocked as this horseless carriage passed the speed of even their Horned Lizards could run. The speedometer needle began to climb: Twenty miles per hour... twenty-five miles per hour... The trio was impressed by such speed, but for the Ghost, it was lackluster compared to what he'd tasted. The pickup was built in 1920, so for the Ghost, it was pretty dated in terms of speed. However, with its coupled second engine, it wasn't. The Ghost dropped the truck into fourth gear, and the Autowa Pickup's engine, a twin-connected pair of inline fours, roared with wide-open headers. The needle is still climbing: thirty-two miles per hour... thirty-seven miles per hour... The Guards and Inferna were taken by such power and noise. Their eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and excitement as the truck was put into fifth gear, and still the Autowa's speedometer climbed: forty-one miles per hour... forty-five miles per hour... fifty miles per hour... The speedometer needle had begun bouncing at forty-five miles per hour, the twin pair of Inline fours' redlined with deafening noise as they raced into the downtown area. Once they neared the Courthouse, the Ghost slowed down, carefully entered the parking lot, and parked the truck with the engine shimmying to a silent stop. The four wasted no time and got inside. Inferna looked at the sun before she went inside, taking notice that it had been a ten-minute drive.

Once everyone entered the Chamber of Debate and the Igneous Delegation had introduced themselves, the Key Council was introduced by Archie. "Good Morning, everyone. As you already know, I am Archie, Head Councilman of the Key Council. Introducing my fellow council members, first on my left is Dr. Madison Sue, Head of the Science Sector. Next is John Hladovcak, the General of the Greater Ottawan Air Corp, then Barbara, Head of Rescue and Relief. Then on my right is General of the Greater Ottawa Army, Roger Allen, then is the Ghost of Ottawa, then finally, Sundeep, our Head of Commerce. As the talks of peace and a potential alliance began, Inferna and her people filled Archie and the Key Council in on what this world had been like..."In the earliest of my memories... I can't remember a time humanity ever really sought peace with honest intent to keep their word." Began Inferna, her mind slipping into a flashback. The humanity of this world had been dead set on slaughtering any race without the protection of their deity, Creos, this world's God of Humanity. Wars and nothing short of genocides had plagued the other races as humanity spread its influence. Alliances formed and fell when the Demon race joined the fray on the side of Humanity. Then, as the Angels joined in, every other race lost hope. Suddenly, a new nation had joined in the fray, a nation of humans.

"You mean us, don't you?" Asked Barbara, to which Inferna nodded yes. "Greater Ottawa has the most strategic advantage as your nation controls the tri-sea shipping lanes. My people hope to ally with you, as we have a deadline fast approaching. You see, in two days, the Holy Church of Mankind shall have ships at our ports, very close to your lands. Please, I beg of you..." Inferna bowed her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "...Save my people! We'd do anything not to die at their hands!" The Key Council nodded, then asked her delegation to wait in the reception room. Agreeing to this, Inferna looked to the Ghost as she left the room with her delegates. Once they were gone, the Key Council deliberated and made radio calls to their voters. That was true for everyone except the Ghost; instead, he took the center of the room and pointed to Mike Brisson, who'd set up a radio broadcast. With a thumbs up, the Ghost spoke to the citizens across Greater Ottawa.

"Citizens of Greater Ottawa, just moments ago, the Key Council was asked by the Chiefess Inferna of the Tribal Igneous Dominion if we would save her people from inevitable slaughter at the hands of Templars of the Holy Church of Humanity to commence in two days. While Mastocracy demands that the Council ask for your votes to participate or stay out of wars, I am making this appeal to every Ottawan." The Ghost paused a moment to take in a breath, "I carried the body of a young elven girl to the morgue yesterday. Her body was beaten, broken, and ultimately killed by the Head Guard of Libra-Ursa, a human. In the aspect of race, that is the only way we are similar. My people, I ask of you! Will you let more innocents die until these merciless murderers cloaked in the indignity of religion? Or will you stand up and send them to hell with our might!?" With the Ghost's broadcast, the vote was finalized as unanimous for waging war. Inferna cried tears of hope as she rode with the Ghost to Fort Boyce. For war was on the horizon, and the Holy Church of Humanity was two days early.
