Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN

A Wedding in Warri

The wedding brought the Ejiros and the Okonkwos into the same compound for the first time. The clash of culture Warri versus Anambra was loud and proud, but everyone agreed: Favour and Daniel made a striking couple.

Favour was draped in gold lace with coral beads that bit into her skin. The heat was unforgiving, but her smile was flawless. Daniel, in his ivory agbada, looked like a prince.

"You no believe say this girl no sabi cook stew?" Mama Ejiro muttered to her neighbor, half-joking, half-weary.

The woman laughed. "Dem go learn when pot dey burn!"

But Daniel's mother, Madam Okonkwo, had sharper eyes, she watched Favour closely, especially when the bride faked laughter at a joke about pounded yam and cooking from scratch.

Later that evening, Madam Okonkwo pulled her son aside.

"Daniel, are you sure this girl can handle home?"

Daniel smiled. "She's smart, Mama. She'll learn."

"Hmm," the woman said, not convinced. "Marriage is not about smartness, it's about character and consistency."

But Daniel was in love, and love is deaf to motherly warnings. The bride and groom were soon off to Abuja, to begin what should have been a peaceful beginning.
