Chapter 13 - 13. Supermarket

Riki opened his eyes as the morning sunlight peeking through the gaps in the window curtains greeted him.

There were no morning classes today.

No appointments either.

Riki wanted to stay in the apartment all day.

But… would the system still assign him a daily mission?

[Of course]

Riki nearly jumped when the system screen suddenly appeared in front of him.

He growled in frustration at being startled by the system.

"I'm not used to this yet," Riki muttered, then sat up.

[You will still receive missions, and besides, there are some missions you can complete while staying at home]

[So, don't worry]

Well, that actually made Riki worried even more. What kind of missions would the system give him if he was just at home?

Since his level was still bronze, he thought it would still be easy, right?

[Oh, you're almost ready to move up from bronze to silver, master]

[You've been very diligent in completing missions]

Riki furrowed his brow, then raised one eyebrow, "Weren't you the one who threatened me with this and that punishment if I didn't complete them?" Riki asked.

[That's true, but there are some missions that don't have punishments, right? You can refuse them if you want]

The problem is, Riki gets attractive rewards for completing them. How could he refuse?

But Riki even got around eight missions yesterday. No wonder he'll be promoted to Silver soon.

"You're making me feel trapped," Riki complained. He was about to lie back down and sleep again, but his stomach suddenly growled loudly.

He was starving.

"I must be really tired; I'm already hungry this early in the morning—" Riki picked up his advanced smartphone. He was surprised to see the clock showing 10 a.m.

He had overslept.

Unusual.

But his bed was so soft; he couldn't get up from his extremely comfortable bed. Back then, Riki only had a hard, uncomfortable bed. Even because Riki hadn't had time to clean his room for over a month, bed bugs suddenly appeared on his mattress.

That terrible life, Riki wouldn't repeat it again.

Never.

He would take on seven, eight, or more missions, as long as he didn't end up in poverty again.

Whether he likes it or not, Riki has to cook today so he can eat sooner.

But unfortunately, he forgot there were no ingredients at all in the refrigerator in his kitchen.

Riki closed the refrigerator again with a frustrated expression.

It's pointless if the refrigerator is so advanced but can't restock itself.

[Your first mission is to spend 300,000$ or more on your needs at the nearest supermarket; the amount cannot be less than that.]

[Your reward is a fivefold cashback of the amount you spend.]

"No need, I can just order food from the nearby restaurant," Riki refused.

But it seems the system really wants Riki to shop.

[If you refuse this mission, your funds will be reduced by three hundred thousand dollars.]

Riki's eyes widened in disbelief.

"This is clever; you always force me and make me follow those missions!"

[You have one hour from now!]

Riki growled in frustration, but his feet had already hurried back to his room to put on his gray hoodie.

Reluctantly, he stepped out of his comfortable, luxurious apartment.

The weather in the equatorial region and its surroundings hadn't been good lately.

Especially in the major cities with limited greenery.

It was scorching hot!

Even though the supermarket was across the street, Riki was still too lazy to go out. Besides, he didn't have to work as hard as he used to.

Covering his head with a hoodie, Riki stepped out of the apartment building.

The scorching heat immediately greeted him.

Riki couldn't open his eyes because it was too bright.

He walked quickly, using his long legs.

A sense of relief washed over him as he stepped into the air-conditioned supermarket.

It was the nearest supermarket and also the largest one there.

"Shopping up to 300,000$, huh? I think that's pretty easy," Riki muttered.

He headed straight to where the expensive meats were kept.

A place Riki had always avoided before. He bought expensive meats like Wagyu A5 and other meats he liked, such as chicken, lamb, and others. Riki also took the most expensive lobster, large shrimp, vegetables, spices, and anything he thought he needed—or didn't need.

But unfortunately, when it was all added up, it only came to $2,600.

Riki was sure he had brought the most expensive meat there, weighing one kilogram.

How could Riki have spent $300,000 there? Why was the amount so high? And why at the supermarket?

Riki was confused because there was only about twenty minutes left.

Wait a minute! The system didn't say that spending 300,000$ was specifically for Riki alone.

He could spend it on others too, right?

[You can do that, master, but you don't have much time left]

Riki immediately approached the supermarket employee who was promoting new products with a microphone. He grabbed the microphone and said.

"Because I'm in a good mood, I'll pay for all your groceries here! And I'm serious!"

The people there started to pay attention to Riki. Some of them immediately recognized Riki as the young man who had been on a date at Skydine the night before. Because the TV station had chosen to broadcast it live.

Since people love freebies, they immediately started shopping wildly and taking whatever they could get their hands on.

Riki was lucky because it was the largest supermarket, so there were many people shopping there every day.

The supermarket manager quickly arrived due to the commotion.

Riki quickly handed over his card as payment.

The manager took Riki's card without saying much.

The cashiers there continued to count the customers' purchases.

Riki waited while casually eating ice cream.

The line of people waiting was quite long. But he didn't mind that; he just wanted to know if he had enough time to reach the 300,000$ target?

[Time's up!]

[Your total purchases amount to 256,000$ and do not meet the agreed amount]

"I don't agree with anything," Riki muttered, annoyed at feeling tricked by the system.

[The system gives another chance, but the 300,000$ is still taken]

[The first mission is reopened; you can wait until the queue is finished and receive a fivefold reward for what you spent]

Riki furrowed his brow; it seemed the system didn't want him to lose out. His spirits returned, though not as high as before.

"Excuse me!"

Riki turned to a middle-aged woman holding a small child. The woman and her child looked very simple. They were carrying a lot of groceries and toys for the child.

Riki smiled at the child; he liked cute little kids.

"Are you the one paying for everyone's groceries? Thank you, young man, you're so kind! Without you, our family might have only been able to eat five packs of instant noodles for the week. Thanks to you, we can eat well. We promise we'll work harder so we can be like you someday." the woman said.

Riki was moved by the woman's words. Then, he looked at the long lines around every cash register there.

Many of them looked simple, and some were clearly from underprivileged backgrounds.

It seemed Riki didn't need to be upset that his mission had failed.

Seeing the people being helped with the money he had obtained made him very happy.

"If you're happy, I'm happy too. May your family eat well," said Riki.

[Because of your sincere heart to help others, your reward will be multiplied!]

[You will receive ten times what you spent at the supermarket]
