Droplets of rain splattered onto the ground outside as Edward examined his face in the mirror. Just moments ago he was walking home from a 12 hour shift at work. How hated his current job, working as a door-to-door salesman making money only from commissions. It was practically modern day slavery! Tired after a long day of work, and making not a single sale, he was trudging home. In his depression and exhaustion, he carelessly crossed the road without paying attention, and a truck crashed into him. That was his last memory before waking up. Now he was in the body of a man in his early twenties which felt completely foreign to him.
As he stared at himself in the mirror, a sharp spike of pain jolted through his head. Memories of his current body began to merging with his own. It turned out that he transmigrated into the body of a shinobi in the Naruto world! And not just any shinobi, he was an Uchiha. Specifically, Uchiha Kagerou the younger brother of Uchiha Fugaku – the Patriarch of the Uchiha clan. Unfortunately, things weren't as great as they seemed on the surface. It seems he was born with a vastly lower talent than his brother, and in the world that valued strength above all else, this caused him to be ignored and often isolated from his family and the rest of the clan. The original host had also formed a one-sided grudge, fueled by deep-seated jealousy and hatred between him and Fugaku. The constant comparison to his brother was one of the reasons for this, but the main reason was Mikoto, the girl he loved.
Mikoto had been one of his best friends growing up. She was 3 years older than him and 2 years younger than his brother. She had been his first love before even hitting puberty. In his family, his parents and brother ignored him - often giving him scornful looks for being weak. Even the rest of the clan whispered behind his back, calling him the 'worthless son of the patriarch'. In this lonely dark reality of his, Mikoto had been a vibrant splash of colour, brightening up his world. She would always go out of her way to make sure he was okay, and eventually he grew closer to her than he was with his own family. His entire motivation and drive to become a strong shinobi had been to impress her.
But it ultimately had been for nothing. Almost a year ago, the third shinobi war had begun, and many of the Uchiha were sent to the frontlines by the village leaders. Mikoto had a near death experience on a mission. This prompted Kagerou to face his reality that they could die any day, and he confessed his feelings to Mikoto. By some strange phenomenon, he wasn't the only one with the same idea. He still remembered Mikoto's words after his confession. "I'm really sorry for giving you the wrong idea, Kagerou. I've always seen you as a younger brother. I also accepted to marry your brother earlier today," she said with a look of pity.
Kagerou was an special jounin whilst Fugaku an elite jounin. In his mind, this was the reason for Mikoto's rejection. The heartbreak had driven Kagerou to despair, and he locked himself in his room, refusing to do anything.
Days turned into months, and no one even came by to check on him. His parents, brother, the rest of the clan and even Mikoto just pretended he didn't exist. Eventually, Kagerou had taken his life by swallowing too many chakra pills, which then lead to Edward transmigrating into his body.
Edward, now Uchiha Kagerou, fell to the ground as his knees gave out. He experienced 21 years worth of memories in just a few seconds. Tears rolled down his face as memories that weren't his, along with emotions that he had never felt, flashed before him.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAGGGHH!"
Gasping for breath as the pain subsided, he attempted to rise from the floor, but his body refused to obey his commands. Sweat gathered on his brow – no, his entire body was drenched, every inch slick with exertion.
After several minutes lying motionless, he summoned what little strength remained and pulled himself upright, using the edge of the bed to steady his unsteady legs. Although he hadn't lived these himself, he acknowledged the pain his predecessor had gone through, especially after feeling his emotions first hand. At that moment, he vowed silently to carry on Kagerou's will through him.
All of a sudden, there was a knock at the door.
When Kagerou opened it, a messenger stood outside, bowing slightly before speaking.
"I bring news from Lord Fugaku," he said. "First, your father has officially stepped down. Lord Fugaku has assumed the role of clan patriarch as of this morning. As part of this change, he has decided that the clan will no longer be sending you monthly support."
The messenger paused for a moment, allowing the words to settle before continuing.
"Secondly… Lady Mikoto has given birth to a son. His name is Uchiha Itachi. She wishes for you to visit and see the child when you are able."
With that, the messenger bowed once more, waiting silently for a response.
Panic flashed through his mind as Kagerou realised he was now in the Naruto world, and had to do missions to make money and survive. Especially if the clan wasn't going to subsidise his living costs any more.
He started formulating multiple plans in his mind on how to survive the upcoming bloodbaths. One, he could apprentice under Teuchi, the owner of Ichiraku Ramen. The shop must not be very popular yet, so now was the perfect time!
He could also desert the village. Many minor villages would gladly accept a special jounin Uchiha into their ranks. Not to mention the even more isolated villages like Hoshigakure which barely interacted with the outside world. If he went to one of these places he could easily become a local celebrity and live a long peaceful life. The was no need to interfere with the plot, especially since it had a happy ending.
However, there was one thing holding Kagerou back. His twin sister, Uchiha Akari. Along with Mikoto, she was the only member of the clan that never turned her back on him. Even now, for the past year, she had been visiting whenever she could. However, as the conflict of the war intensified and spread, her appearances became increasingly sporadic, eventually ceasing altogether.
As of right now, it had been over 6 months since he had last heard from her. As an elite jounin like his brother, she must have been getting many missions from the higher ups. No doubt they were plotting to kill her and deal a huge blow to the clan.
As Kagerou was contemplating his next action, a transparent blue screen flashed before his eyes.
