Chapter 51 - Chapter 49: The Ants

A small laugh.

Soft.

Cutting through the dark like something that hadn't meant to.

Ji-eun.

Her smile brief.

Almost gentle.

Almost.

---

Gun-woo looked at her.

Still standing in the blue light.

"You're laughing."

Not offended.

Just noting it.

---

"Of course I'm laughing."

Her voice finding something warmer underneath the precision.

Not much.

But there.

"Ji-eun let me explain what I truly mean."

He leaned forward slightly.

"When I say tomorrow I am not speaking about the next twenty four hours."

A breath.

"I mean the future of all of it. The future of us."

His eyes moving across the table.

"The future of mankind itself."

---

Ji-eun looked at him.

The smile still present at the edges but the eyes behind it unchanged.

"A future built on lies."

She tilted her head slightly.

"Sure. That works for now."

A pause.

"But if things continue to escalate the way they are escalating it will be too late for any future you're describing."

She sat forward.

"We all know most of the world is not as affected as we are. Not yet."

Her voice staying level.

Precise.

"Did you hear the latest. Multiple countries are discussing deploying nuclear weapons inside the rifts."

She let that sit.

"That alone should tell you everything about where this is heading."

Her eyes on him directly.

"And with all your lies. All your carefully managed information. All your secrecy."

A breath.

"When that moment comes. When it gets that far."

She shook her head.

"It will not end well."

---

Gun-woo nodded.

Slowly.

"I understand your concern."

His voice not dismissing it.

Taking it.

"I genuinely do."

A pause.

"And if you have answers to the problems we are facing I am all ears."

He straightened.

Something shifting in his posture.

Moving from conversation into something more purposeful.

"But we have run through every available option. Every route. Every alternative."

His eyes moved across the table.

Not just Ji-eun now.

All of them.

"We can argue the moral dimensions of what is happening here for the rest of the night. That argument is real and it deserves to be had."

A breath.

"But right now. Tonight. What you need to know is what we are walking into."

He looked at Ji-eun one more time.

"Stop wasting time on me."

---

A voice from the far end of the table.

Calm.

Unhurried.

The kind of calm that came from a person who had never needed volume.

---

Seung-hyun.

His arms folded.

His face carrying nothing readable.

His eyes moving once around the room before settling on Gun-woo.

"Tell her."

A pause.

"Tell them all."

The blue light catching the edges of his face.

"About the ants."

---

The room went quiet.

Not the quiet of people waiting to speak.

The quiet of people who had stopped thinking about speaking.

Just listening.

Just watching Gun-woo in the blue light.

Waiting for whatever came next.
