Chapter 50 - Chapter 48: The Table

Seung-hyun laughed.

Not loud.

Just genuine.

The kind of laugh that comes from somewhere tired.

"What kind of man is willing to send his own family to hell."

His eyes moved slowly.

Found Gun-woo's.

Held them.

"The sad truth is."

A pause.

"I understand."

---

Gun-woo looked at him a moment longer.

Then the smile came back.

Small.

Tired around the edges.

"Enough of this."

He turned.

"We're almost late for the meeting."

---

Seung-hyun fell into step beside him.

"Let's go."

---

The room they entered was dark.

Wide table stretching the length of it.

Chairs lining both sides.

The twelve guild leaders taking their seats one by one.

The room filling without becoming loud.

Just the sound of chairs.

Of people settling.

Of the particular silence that comes before something important.

---

At the front Gun-woo stood beside the projection screen.

Blue light cutting through the dark behind him.

Falling across the table.

Across the faces around it.

---

He hadn't spoken yet.

---

A hand went up.

Didn't wait.

---

The voice came cold.

Precise.

The kind of voice that had decided what it was going to say before it entered the room.

---

"Before we begin."

Ji-eun.

Her dark blue lipstick catching the projection light.

Her eyes on Gun-woo directly.

"I would like to address something."

She didn't soften the entry.

"Are all these lies really necessary."

A breath.

"First the lie about the dungeons we are supposedly winning."

Her voice not rising.

Just staying exactly where it was.

Which was somehow worse.

"Then the lies about our losses."

She looked at him.

"I'm not sure how you think this works. But I don't appreciate having my name attached to misinformation."

A pause.

"Why not simply tell the public the truth. That the dungeon we are about to attempt is in fact a singular S rank. That the monsters inside are not as overwhelmingly powerful as implied."

Her eyes moved briefly.

Found Seung-hyun.

"And why does South Korea's strongest hunter seem comfortable with all of it."

---

The eyes in the room followed hers.

Found Seung-hyun.

Waited.

---

Gun-woo spoke before the silence could settle into something harder to move.

"Ji-eun."

His voice steady.

Not defensive.

"I understand your skepticism. I understand why you're asking these questions."

He looked at her directly.

"That is exactly why I brought you here. All of you."

A pause.

He looked across the table.

Each face.

Each pair of eyes in the blue light.

"The truth is we are losing."

He said it plainly.

Without softening it.

"And if this continues we will keep losing until there is nothing left to lose."

---

He moved his hands to the table.

Leaned slightly forward.

---

"The lies. The managed information. The careful framing."

A breath.

"It is not to deceive. It is to prevent the kind of panic that destroys from the inside what the dungeons haven't finished destroying from the outside."

His eyes finding Ji-eun again.

"To keep hope alive. To stop the fracturing. To give people something to hold onto while we do what needs to be done."

---

Ji-eun looked at him.

Her expression not softening.

But listening.

"What bigger picture."

Her voice still level.

Still precise.

"What exactly are we looking at that makes all of this necessary."

---

Gun-woo looked back at her.

The blue light behind him.

The dark around the table.

Twelve faces watching him.

Waiting.

---

His smile grew.

Slowly.

Something behind it that hadn't been in the press conference.

Something that had been waiting for this room specifically.

"Tomorrow."

A breath.

"That is the bigger picture."
