Chapter 49 - Chapter 47: Backstage

Gun-woo's voice found the room the way warm water finds cold.

Not forcing anything.

Just moving through it.

---

"The leaders of the twelve great guilds have all been working extremely hard."

His voice even.

Unhurried.

"I am pleased to say that collectively we have cleared each S ranked dungeon assigned to us."

A pause.

"Olympus has been providing manpower and equipment. The majority of operations however are being run by South Korea. By our people."

---

He addressed the death count directly.

No deflection.

No softening.

---

"Regarding the delay in releasing casualty numbers. It is genuinely difficult to arrive at a fixed figure when all forces and all resources are stretched to their current capacity. Data gathering has slowed. That is the truth. We will deliver those numbers. We are not hiding from them."

---

He moved to Tears.

---

"As for my relationship with the hunter Tears. I am not particularly close with him."

His voice carrying no performance in either direction.

Not distancing himself.

Not aligning too closely.

"I met him briefly. We spoke. Whether I believe everything he has told us is something I continue to evaluate."

A breath.

"But he is giving us help. And I will be damned if I turn away help in the middle of all this."

---

He looked at the room.

At the cameras.

At the faces.

---

"I want to be clear about something."

His voice finding a different weight now.

Not louder.

Just more direct.

"I am not doing this for politics. I am not doing this for power. I am doing this because I believe in my people."

A pause.

"I believe in our people."

Another.

"I believe in humanity."

---

He straightened slightly.

---

"I must apologize. I am being informed that my time here has reached its limit. I am an extremely busy man."

The smile returning.

Brief.

Genuine.

"Thank you all."

---

He turned.

---

The questions followed him like weather.

Getting louder as he moved away from the podium.

As if volume could pull him back.

It couldn't.

---

The twelve guild leaders rose from the front row.

Moving through the curtain behind him.

One after another.

The cameras tracking them until the curtain closed.

---

Backstage.

Quieter.

The noise of the room becoming something muffled.

Distant.

Still present but no longer consuming everything.

---

Gun-woo was still moving when the voice found him.

---

"You have a way with people."

---

He stopped.

Turned.

---

Seung-hyun.

Leader of the Dark Blade Guild.

The strongest hunter in South Korea.

Standing with the particular stillness of someone who had never needed to fill silence with movement.

A face almost too symmetrical.

Almost too refined.

Tall.

Lean.

Elegant in the way that had nothing to do with effort.

Calm eyes that gave away nothing.

Carrying himself like a man who had already lived through every version of what came next.

---

Gun-woo looked at him.

Something genuine moving across his face.

"Seung-hyun."

A breath.

"Thank you."

---

Seung-hyun smiled.

Small.

Barely there.

He looked at Gun-woo the way someone looks when they already know the answer to what they're about to ask.

"Would you send your own family into one of those things."

A pause.

"You certainly know how to send everyone else."

---

The words weren't cruel.

Just honest.

The kind of honest that only exists between people who have known each other long enough to skip the outer layers.

---

Gun-woo looked back at him.

A long moment.

"I wouldn't want to send my family there."

His voice quiet now.

No podium underneath it.

No cameras.

Just the words.

"But in dark times extreme measures become necessary."

A breath.

"When push comes to shove."

He paused.

"Yes."

---

The smile left his face.

Completely.

What remained underneath it had no performance left in it.

Just the weight of every decision that had led to tonight.

Every name on a list he hadn't released yet.

Every family waiting for information he hadn't given them.

---

Nothing but the truth of it.

Sitting in his face.

Unguarded.

Just for a moment.

Just here.

Just between the two of them backstage while the noise of the room continued without him on the other side of the curtain.
