Chapter 1 - Strangers, Coffee, and Chaos

[scene 1 : Welcome to Ravenshore]

"Ah… a new journey. A new city. A fresh start."

Mira Collins leaned her head against the taxi window as the buildings of Ravenshore City whirled past her. The air smelled like roasted coffee beans, car smoke, and possibility. Somewhere between excitement and fear, she let out a long sigh.

"I'm finally here. But…" her voice trailed into a whisper.

"I just wish my family was with me."

There was a beat of silence before she forced a small, shaky smile.

"It's okay, Mira. You've got this. You're twenty-four, a medical graduate, and officially… an intern now. You can totally survive this city alone… right?"

The cab screeched to a stop.

Mira clumsily grabbed her suitcase, tripped slightly on her shoelace, and stumbled out like a newborn deer.

She blinked up at the towering building in front of her..St. Augustine Medical Center.

It looked like the kind of hospital CEOs and celebrities would fake an illness to get admitted into.

"Damn. Fancy," she whispered.

A gust of wind blew her hair into her mouth. She spat it out with all the grace of a soggy mop.

"Smooth start, Collins. Real smooth."

Fifteen minutes later…

"Your temporary stay isn't ready yet?" the receptionist said in the fakest polite tone Mira had ever heard. "That's strange. Dr. Blake was supposed to approve it."

Mira blinked. "Uh… Who's Dr. Blake?"

"Head of surgical interns. You'll meet him today."

Great. First day in a new city, and she was already messing things up.

She wheeled her bag toward the waiting area, sat down, and groaned into her hands.

"Why is finding a home harder than passing anatomy finals?"

[Scene 2 : The Elevator and… Him]

Ding.

The elevator doors opened.

And in walked a man who seemed like he had just stepped out of a movie scene. White coat. Collar up. Hands in his pockets. Hair swept back with a messy elegance. He didn't look at anyone. He didn't need to. People made way for him like he was gravity itself.

Dr. Ethan Blake.

"Intern Collins?" a deep voice snapped Mira out of her trance.

She shot up. "Yes, that's me!"

He glanced at her clipboard. Then at her.

"You're late. And you submitted the wrong form."

His eyes were cold. Blue-grey. Sharp.

She stumbled. "I—I emailed the file, but my Wi-Fi—no, I mean, my old apartment—no, wait, it was raining and—"

"I don't need your life story," he said flatly. "Just the right paperwork."

She stared, speechless.

He walked past her, crisp footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Okay… K-drama villain vibes? Check.

[Scene 3 : The Street, the Blood, and chaos]

Mira had just stepped out of the hospital café with her half-eaten sandwich when she heard it—

Screech. Thud.

A motorbike skidded to the side of the road. A man—maybe in his late 50s..was lying in the middle of the street, blood pooling beneath his arm.

Without thinking, Mira dropped her food, ran to him, and checked for a pulse.

she shouted. Her voice cracked. "Sir? Can you hear me? Stay with me!"

A crowd gathered, but no one moved closer. People were filming. Of course they were.

Then came the loud, unmistakable voice of someone in command.

"Step back!"

Boots. Fast. Confident.

A man crouched beside her, pulled on gloves, and calmly assessed the scene.

"Are you a medical professional?" he asked, eyes sharp.

"I—intern. First day. I just—"

"Good enough. Keep pressure here. I'll call dispatch."

He turned to the crowd. "If anyone here filmed instead of helped, congratulations. You're the reason people bleed out."

Silence.

Mira stared at him. He was intense. Ice-cool. And kind of hot. Like crime-scene hot.

He glanced back at her. "Name?"

"Mira Collins."

He nodded. "Detective Caleb West. You just made the right kind of impression, Collins."

[scene 4 : Confused, Clumsy, and Caleb?]

Mira sat at the café, her fingers trembling..She couldn't stop replaying what had just happened — the blood, the crowd, the calm intensity of Detective Caleb West, and the way he had taken control like the world didn't dare disobey him.

Across from her, Caleb finished scribbling notes on a small pad.

He glanced up at her. "You did good out there."

She blinked. "I nearly fainted. Pretty sure my soul left my body."

"Still. You stepped in. Most people don't."

She didn't know what to say. So she nodded. And took another awkward sip of coffee.

Just then, someone passed by the glass café wall. Tall. White coat. Controlled energy like a storm trapped in a crystal case.

Dr. Ethan Blake.

He slowed.

His eyes met Mira's through the glass.

Then shifted to the man across from her.

Then back to her.

No change in expression.

No smirk. No scowl.

But there was something. A twitch in the jaw. A blink too long. A pause that said too much without saying anything at all.

Caleb noticed.

He leaned back in his chair slightly. "Friend of yours?"

Mira laughed nervously. "No. I mean yes. I mean—he's my boss."

"Interesting," Caleb said, his voice unreadable.

He stood up, zipping up his jacket. "Well then, Miss Collins. Thanks for your time. I'll be in touch if I need more info."

He nodded at her once and walked out. No card. No dramatic exit. Just a soft click of the door behind him.

Mira sat frozen, her heart still playing catch-up.

What… just happened?

She looked back out the glass, but Ethan was gone.

Gone — but definitely not unnoticed.

[Scene 5 : Interns, Impressions, and Instincts]

"Two hours in this city and I've already seen blood, a crime scene, and the coldest stare in human history."

She groaned.

Just then, her hospital ID buzzed with a notification.

Group Message: Intern Orientation starts in 20 mins. Don't be late. – Dr. Blake

Her soul left her body.

"Oh no no no!!!!!! orientation!"

She bolted out of the café, running full-speed through the hospital's polished corridor. Her coffee spilled slightly, and she nearly knocked over a man with a wheelchair.

"Sorry! Intern! Chaos! Don't sue me!"

She reached the auditorium just in time to slide into a seat…last row, of course—panting like she'd run a marathon.

A few heads turned. Whispers followed.

"Isn't she the one who was sitting with that detective?"

"She's kinda cute though."

"She looks like she'd cry if someone coughed too loud."

She didn't care.

Until he walked in.

Dr. Ethan Blake.

Flawless white coat. File in one hand. A pen clipped to his pocket like it was designed by Prada. He didn't look at anyone. Didn't need to.

Mira stared straight ahead.

Please don't look at me. Please don't look at me.

He looked straight at her.

A pause. A beat too long.

"Interns," he began coolly, "I hope none of you have had an eventful morning. That would be… inconvenient."

Mira shrank two inches in her seat.

just as Mira finally let herself breathe, a voice echoed in her head.

Two men.

Two strangers.

One city.

And something told her…

This was only the beginning of the chaos.
