Chapter 2 - the life of kanak thakur

Kanak Thakur stepped out of her small apartment in Mumbai, India, and took a deep breath of the salty sea air. She lived in a bustling neighborhood, surrounded by the sounds of honking cars and chatter of pedestrians.

As a microbiology professional, Kanak spent most of her days studying the intricacies of microorganisms. She worked at a research institute, where she was part of a team working on a top-secret project to develop new antibiotics.

Kanak's passion for microbiology had started when she was a teenager. She had always been fascinated by the tiny organisms that lived all around us, and she spent hours reading about them and conducting experiments.

As she walked to work, Kanak's mind was preoccupied with the latest developments in her research. She had been studying a new strain of bacteria that showed promise in fighting off antibiotic-resistant infections.

When she arrived at the lab, Kanak's colleagues greeted her with a mixture of hellos and curious questions about her latest findings. She smiled and chatted with them, feeling grateful for the sense of community and camaraderie that came with working in a research team.

Little did Kanak know, her life was about to take a dramatic turn. A discovery on the other side of the world would soon set her on a path that would change everything she thought she knew about her work, her life, and herself.

Kanak Thakur lived with her father, Vraj Thakur, and her stepmother, Sobha, in a small but comfortable house in Mumbai. Her mother had passed away when she was just a child, and her father had remarried a few years later.

Kanak's stepmother, Sobha, was a greedy and manipulative woman who only cared about one thing: money. She had married Vraj for his wealth and status, and she did everything in her power to keep him under her control.

Despite Sobha's cruel nature, Kanak's father loved her and tried to make the best of the situation. He worked hard to provide for his family, but Sobha was never satisfied. She constantly demanded more money, more jewelry, and more luxuries.

Kanak's stepmother also had a daughter of her own, Maya, who was a spoiled and selfish girl. Maya was used to getting everything she wanted, and she looked down on Kanak and her younger brother, Mayank.

Mayank was a sweet and gentle boy who looked up to Kanak as his role model. Kanak loved her brother dearly and did everything she could to protect him from Sobha's cruelty.

Despite the difficulties at home, Kanak had grown into a strong and independent young woman. She worked hard at her job as a microbiology professional and was determined to make a better life for herself and her brother.

As she navigated the complexities of her family life, Kanak couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She knew that Sobha was not to be trusted, and she worried about what might happen if her stepmother's greed and ambition got the better of her.

Little did Kanak know, a discovery on the other side of the world would soon set her on a path that would change everything she thought she knew about her life and her family.

Kanak walked into the kitchen, exhausted from a long day at work. She had been looking forward to a quiet evening at home, but as soon as she saw her stepmother, Sobha, she knew that wasn't going to happen.

Sobha was standing at the counter, her eyes fixed on Kanak with a mixture of disdain and resentment. "So, you're finally home," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I was starting to think you had forgotten about your family."

Kanak sighed inwardly, knowing that this was just the beginning of another one of Sobha's tirades. "I'm sorry, Sobha," she said, trying to keep her tone neutral. "I had a long day at work."

Sobha snorted. "A long day at work? You think you're so special with your fancy job and your fancy education. But you're not special, Kanak. You're just a burden on this family."

Kanak felt a stinging sensation in her eyes as tears began to well up. She had heard Sobha's insults countless times before, but they still hurt. "That's not fair, Sobha," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

Sobha sneered at her. "Fair? You want to talk about fair? You're the one who gets to live off your father's money while I'm stuck here taking care of your brother and dealing with your father's messes."

Kanak felt a lump form in her throat as she struggled to hold back tears. She knew that Sobha was just trying to hurt her, but it was hard not to take her words personally.

Just then, Mayank walked into the kitchen, a look of concern on his face. "Kanak, what's wrong?" he asked, seeing the tears in her eyes.

Kanak tried to smile, not wanting to worry her brother. "It's nothing, Mayank," she said, quickly wiping away her tears. "Just a long day, that's all."

But Mayank wasn't fooled. He knew that Sobha had been at it again, and he felt a surge of anger towards his stepmother. "Leave Kanak alone, Sobha," he said, his voice firm.

Sobha's face turned red with rage, but she knew better than to mess with Mayank. He was the only person in the house who stood up to her, and she didn't want to risk losing her control over him.

"Fine," she spat, turning on her heel and storming out of the kitchen.

Kanak let out a sigh of relief as the tension in the room dissipated. She smiled weakly at Mayank, grateful for his support. "Thanks, Mayank," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Mayank nodded, putting a comforting arm around his sister's shoulders. "Anytime, Kanak," he said. "We're in this together."
