Chapter 10 - Shielded In Silence

Amara's POV :

Ugh...I hate this PE Class. Why don't they just leave me alone?! Like Hello?! I sighed and shut my locker angrily. My eyes widened. No...I hope they didn't notic—

"What happened, Nerdy Grandma?", squeaked Cassie. Of course...OF COURSE.

I turned around to look at her, "N-nothing...", I whispered. "Sorry I just—"

Cassie and her little mice laughed aloud, cutting my voice, "Oh, Nerdy Granny. Show your 'anger' to your family", she crossed her arms, "This school...or the properties of this school..." She pointed towards my locker, "... isn't yours to let your anger out on them. You're here just because of what they say? Yeah, scholarship. Besides, this locker is more than you can afford. Your family works as electricians, right? Your dad isn't educated, right?"

That did it. I flung my hands around her waist and threw her against her pink locker. Then (don't ask me how), I smirked, "Electricians? You don't know who my parents are, right Cassie?" I laughed, my voice sounding bitter, "Never mind. I guess my background can't change your pitiful mind."

I turned around to leave but glanced over my shoulder, "And never call my dad uneducated." I left the locker room, feeling...Strong? Well, it was just a one-time feeling 'cause as soon as I stepped outside, the breeze blew, taking this newly born feeling along with it. I pressed my back against the wall and slid down. My legs felt too weak to take my weight. I can't believe it... I shoved Cassie against a locker?!

I never chose violence...until now. I mean, How dare she talk about my family like that?!

She deserved it.

I stood up, my hands clenching into fists at my sides.

This life is cruel. Too cruel. And if I choose violence?

It would be crueler.

I sighed and headed towards my classroom. It's not the Mara who just shoved Cassie against the locker. It's the Mara who cries at the smallest things.

The real Mara.

The real Amara Velasco.

I was tapping the surface of my desk with my pen. Brain...generate me a good title for the story...

My eyes opened wide and I quickly scribbled down the name that my brain gifted me in my 21st Century Literature notebook. The Silencers. Wow....such a NICE name.

The bell rang and I stood up, walking towards the teacher's desk to hand Ms. Carmela my 21st Century Literature notebook.

She looked through the pages with a soft smile that quite matches her beautiful face, "Nice handwriting Amara. I think you've got the best handwriting in this whole Mabini section so far. Keep it up."

I blushed and mumbled a soft 'Thanks.' I could practically hear Cassie gritting her teeth, which made me quite satisfied. I went to sit in my seat and watched Ms. Carmela leaving the classroom.

Cassie rolled her eyes and walked towards Lukie. ATTENTION SEEKER. I glanced behind and caught kurt's eyes. A tint of pink shade flushed in my cheek as I quickly looked forward, trying to act nonchalant.

I swear I noticed the same shade in his cheeks! My heart.... That stupid heart is pounding so fast that it seemed that it wanted to burst out of my chest. I was trying hard to control my feelings when a voice spoke up, "Hey, Mara."

I looked up and noticed a blushing Max. He was a good-looking at guy with black messy hair and a sharp-jawline. Why is he here?

He handed me a letter, "Here. Tomorrow's my birthday. I'm holding a party in my house. Don't forget to come. I'm inviting everyone." He winked before leaving. I blinked and opened the letter. A full description of the party given.

I blinked again. I can't believe it. NO. WAY.

I JUST GOT INVITED TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY OF MY NEW CLASSMATE?!

I was so happy, yet terrified. God knows whether it's a prank or not. But I'll go. It's my only chance to socialize with my new school.

I tugged the letter in my pocket and smiled to myself. I didn't even notice Mr. Ellerson entering the classroom. The gossips and laughter quickly died down, and it was the reason I noticed the teacher entering. I dropped my smile and took out my General Biology book.

Mr. Ellerson looked at the class, "Page number 3. Now."

Then he looked at me and smiled kindly, "Miss Velasco, please stand here and read the page."

I nodded and obeyed him, walking towards him and faced the classroom. I opened page number 3 and began to read, ignoring the catcalls and insults.

Soon after finishing, I reached towards my seat and sat down. Something was off...I could feel something sticky beneath me. I tried to stand up but I couldn't. Please no—

SOMEONE GLUED A CHEWING GUM ON MY CHAIR!!

I panicked and tried to stand up again but failed. Tears started streaming down my eyes and everyone noticed it. Mr. Ellerson was saying something but I couldn't hear. I could hear nothing.

Just me and my tears.

Just the seat.

Just the chewing gum.

And suddenly— a pull.

I snapped out of my thoughts as I looked around. Everyone gathered around my desk and was trying to pull me out of my seat. I guess they realized my problem? How intelligent of them.

I tried to stand up as they pulled me.

Hard.

Harder.

Just one more pull.

ZIP.

I was on my feet and I could feel something missing. Everyone was laughing. I looked down at my seat and noticed a bit of my skirt stuck to the chewing gum.

MY SKIRT WAS TORN.

I swallowed, embarassed, as more tears ran down my eyes.

Suddenly, someone pulled me against their hard chest and wrapped a jacket around my hips. Everyone gasped and cheered. I opened my eyes but didn't pull away, trying to seek comfort from the person who helped me. I had no idea who it was until—

"Ssh... it's okay...You are covered."

I knew this voice.

Kurt.

And suddenly, I felt peace and comfort in his arms.
