Chapter 1 - Done With "Love"

Pearl was tired.

She was tired of chasing love down, with her efforts in vain. She was tired of always having a one-sided love.

In her 17 years of living, she has had only two crushes. One of them barely knew she existed, the other, only saw her as a friend. She couldn't force them to like her. That wasn't the person she was, and she knew it wasn't their fault.

Pearl had a pretty average height for a girl. Around 5'5 maybe? Glasses, warm medium skin tone, chestnut brown eyes, straight brown hair till the length of her upper back. She was a bit chubby, but she didn't care.

In her life she only had one boy that confessed his feeling for her, but he was confused, and she knew that. So she rejected him. She couldn't learn to love him, she only saw him as a friend.

Maybe that's why she didn't hold a grudge against the second guy that she liked. Because she understood that feeling.

Now with only a few months left until college starts, she was bored.

She didn't even want to be in a relationship anyways. Everyone she knew that was in a relationship, started breaking up because they didn't wan to deal with the long distance. It was only a few couples that managed to stay together. Like her best friend, Diana and her boyfriend, Sawyer.

It was one of the couples that managed to stay strong throughout junior and senior year of high-school, and Pearl like that about them.

Even if Pearl wanted to get into a relationship, there was no way she could. All the boys she met so far only care about looks, not personality. According to Pearl, she does not meet the beauty standards of society.

Why do they care about looks anyways? It's not like they actually like them for who they are. What if someday, they suddenly turn 'ugly'? Would they dump them?

Most of the relationship aren't based on love. Just attraction.

"I'm telling you, I have this thing where if I get to know about two people dating, they'll break up under a year." Pearl was telling all of her friends the same thing.

And believe it or not, it was true. She found out that a lot of couples were dating. Then they broke up with weeks or months.

It was either a blessing or a curse.

The only couple that sustained was Diana and her boyfriend.

Pearl came to a conclusion that if the couple were truly meant for each other, they would stay together, if not, then the following week they would break up.

It was either a blessing, or a curse. Pearl liked to think of it as a superpower. She would be the person that would help people get with the right person.

Unfortunately, her 'superpower' never worked for her. She couldn't tell who the right guy was for her.

"I'm so bored. I'm bored of being bored." Pearl complained to her friend, Scarlett.

Pearl lived in a colony, where she had a friend group. Scarlett was a year younger than her, that was starting 11th grade soon. Pearl joined school early, so she was one year ahead than she was supposed to be.

"Why don't you do something productive then?" Scarlett suggested.

Scarlett was around the same height as Pearl. Tanned skin, wavy short hair that looks curly. Chocolate brown eyes, filled with chaos.

Pearl and Scarlett were somewhat similar, yet different at the same time.

Pearl, was childish yet mature when she wanted to be. She had some anger issues, but tries to control them. She was a kind and caring person that would look after her friends and would give advice to them. Mainly, she was the one who would get made fun of in the group of friends, which was fine with her, cause she would also laugh along. And it wasn't in a mean way on purpose. It was the love language of the group. To bully each other. She would complain, then laugh along.

Scarlett was a sweet person that would listen to Pearl vent and yap whatever she was frustrated about. Kind of like Pearl, she would also help people, but in her own way. She gives confidence to people when needed. Mostly, she's the one who bullies people in the group. Mostly the boys whenever they needed a good slap or beating. Scarlett was the type of person who wouldn't hesitate to tell people mean stuff when needed.

Pearl liked all of her friends.

"I'm too lazy to do anything productive." She crossed her legs on the bench they were sitting. The other people were too busy talking about video games to notice their conversation.

"Read a book?" Scarlett already knew that Pearl would fall asleep on the first page itself.

Pearl raised an eyebrow.

"Yea, forget about that idea."

Sean, one of the guys, turned to them and started talking. They were talking about school, gossip and some other things.

When Pearl got home, it was around 9 pm.

"Pearl help your brother, would you?" Her mother said.

That's all she was good for to them. To help her precious little brother. Why couldn't she also receive the help when she asked? She had to do most of the work by herself. Now she has to do her brothers work too? His homework, his chores, doing this for him, doing that for him.

She felt like leaving the house, but where would she go?

Her parents don't even want to send her far from home for college. When would they understand that she needs her own things too? She got accepted to a college that was in another state from home, and her parents denied her of going.

"You need to go from college to home and back. You are not even allowed to go to another city, so never ask of this to us ever again." They would say.

She did the chores of the house and plopped down on her bed waiting till it was midnight to sleep, scrolling through her phone, like every other day. It was a routine now.

It was unfair for her. It was her life, yet controlled by her parents. She couldn't even go a mile outside the apartment without informing them. She couldn't go to a proper college that was good for her studied without the permission of her parents.

Pearl wanted to escape this hellhole, but she knew she couldn't. Then at least something, that would make her boring life interesting.

"God, if you're out there, please help me. Please turn my miserable life around."

Pearl sighed as the time on her phone almost struck midnight.

It was going to be another boring day when she would wake up, and she was well aware of it.

But who knows? Maybe there was something that would make her life interesting.
