Chapter 30: Selecting the Class President
"What's it like having All Might as your teacher?"
"Uh!? I-I'm heading to the infirmary, sorry…"
Izuku Midoriya clutched his arm and bolted through the gate.
"What do you think of All Might being a teacher?"
"It made me realize I'm a student at the top hero academy. His presence, his dignity…"
Tenya Iida spoke with earnest formality.
"What about All Might—" Ugh, this guy's filthy!
Shota Aizawa waved dismissively. "He's off today. You're disrupting classes, so clear out."
…
A female reporter in an OL outfit relentlessly questioned every Class 1-A student passing by. "Just let me talk to All Might for a second…!"
As she leaned forward with her microphone, the other reporters, less enthusiastic, whispered among themselves.
"She's a newbie, huh?"
"So full of energy, but it's pointless."
"Yeah, this is U.A. we're talking about."
Seeing someone ignore her and head inside, she chased after them. "Just a moment of your time!"
"Careful."
The instant the reporter stepped through U.A.'s gate, the green light overhead flashed red. As she froze in confusion, a hand grabbed her collar, pulling her back two steps.
Before she could protest, steel plates shot up from the ground, sealing U.A.'s entrance without a single gap!
She collapsed to the ground, heart racing. If someone hadn't pulled her back… she didn't want to think about it.
"That's the U.A. Barrier, the school's defense system. Without a student ID or authorized clearance, the security activates, and—boom—those plates rise from the ground," explained the person who saved her.
"Thank you," she said, standing up. Looking at her rescuer, she noticed his U.A. uniform and realized, "You're… a U.A. student?"
Though he wore the same uniform as others, he carried it with a certain flair. His light blond hair and handsome features made her blush slightly, but she didn't forget her job. "What's your take on All Might as a teacher?"
Yoshikage Kira thought for a moment, then smiled. "He's a hero and a great teacher."
The surrounding reporters gaped. "That's it?"
"Isn't that enough?"
While fending off the crowd, Kira suddenly felt a chilling gaze on his back. He turned casually, but saw nothing.
Was that my imagination…?
Class was about to start, so Kira didn't linger with the reporters. As he reached the gate, the red light on the display turned green, and the steel barrier lowered instantly.
"You have beautiful hands, miss," Kira said with a smile, glancing back at the reporter before entering the campus.
The reporters grumbled about U.A.'s arrogance but, wary of the barrier, dispersed in small groups.
He said my hands are beautiful… The reporter touched her hand, face flushed, until her colleague called her to the van.
"All Might, huh…"
Someone in the crowd chuckled softly and walked away.
…
"Hey, everyone, did you get stopped at the gate? That was my first time getting so much attention! As expected of U.A., right?"
As Kira reached the classroom, Toru Hagakure's voice rang out. Her skirt twirled around Momo Yaoyorozu, her excitement palpable… It seemed yesterday's events hadn't fazed her.
"Well, we're students taught by All Might, so it's no surprise the reporters want dirt on him," Momo said with a wry smile.
"All Might's been fighting crime across the country. Now that he's stationed here, it's no wonder so many reporters showed up," Kira added, approaching them with a grin. "Morning, Hagakure, Yaoyorozu."
"Morning, Kira-kun!"
Hagakure's cheerful reply put Kira at ease. It seemed the potential scandal from yesterday wouldn't detonate his reputation.
"Are we reviewing yesterday's practical training today?" Hagakure asked, having left early and missed the details.
"Probably, but with All Might absent, Aizawa-sensei will likely lead it," Momo replied thoughtfully.
"Aizawa-sensei, huh…" Denki Kaminari, overhearing, slumped onto his desk. "His Quirk is terrifying. How do you even fight him without one…?"
"Don't overthink it," Minoru Mineta whispered, glancing to ensure Iida wasn't watching. He slyly pulled two magazines from his jacket. "Here's what I promised you. Make sure to return them!"
"You're my best friend, Mineta!" Kaminari exclaimed.
What a cheap friendship… Kira thought. If someone took you to a hostess club, would you call them 'big brother' on your knees?
…
The bell rang, and Shota Aizawa shuffled into the classroom, looking as sleep-deprived as ever. He yawned openly at the podium.
"All Might is out today, so I'll handle the hero basics review later. But first, you need to decide something…"
"Another surprise test!?"
"You need to choose a class president," Aizawa said, glancing at Kira. "The temporary class rep duties will also transfer to them."
"So, the class president manages everything for the class?" Eijiro Kirishima stood up, pumped.
"Pretty much."
With that confirmation, hands shot up across the room.
"I'll be class president!"
"I want to lead!"
"This role was made for me!"
"My platform: all girls' skirts 30 cm above the knee!"
…One of those declarations was definitely off.
Aizawa pulled his sleeping bag from under the podium and climbed in.
"Figure out who's class president yourselves. Just finish by the end of class."
With the teacher checking out, the room erupted into chaos, everyone arguing at once.
Kira watched as Katsuki Bakugo climbed onto his chair, huffing like anyone wanting the role had to go through him. Kira shook his head, unimpressed.
Should I run for class president? In junior high, it was just being the teacher's errand boy, a thankless job. But at U.A.'s Hero Course, as Aizawa said, the class president had real authority. Maybe even enough to make Mineta's ridiculous skirt idea happen—within reason.
Without overthinking it, Kira raised his hand. But Aizawa, now wearing an eye mask, was already asleep, and no one noticed the raised hands.
"Everyone!" Tenya Iida stood, arms crossed under his chin, glasses glinting with wisdom. "The class president isn't just a title you claim! It's a vital role requiring leadership and trust. I propose we choose democratically, with anonymous voting!"
