Chapter 141 - Visiting Byron

Another day after school.

Inside the school newspaper office.

Newspaper pages were piled everywhere.

Chloe tapped away at the keyboard, her eyes glued to the screen.

"Interesting, I've found some interesting things about Byron."

Since they parted ways last night, Lana had asked Chloe to help investigate Byron.

And Chloe, living up to her journalistic talent, had found information about Byron in just a few minutes.

"What is it?"

Lana leaned over Chloe's shoulder, and Chloe pointed to the computer.

"Eight years ago, Byron participated in a medical experiment in the Mitron region."

"And the owner of the Mitron company for this experiment was none other than Lionel."

"Luthor Corp is a large capital company; it shouldn't be surprising that they're involved in pharmaceuticals, right?"

Clark, sitting on the sofa, took a bite of his apple and shrugged, "So, Byron was involved too?"

"That's right." Chloe closed the computer with the mouse, "Those children all have antisocial tendencies."

Lana looked at Chloe in surprise, "But that doesn't make sense. Byron seems quite refined."

The group walked out of the newspaper office, and Chloe teased Lana with a smile, "Wow, it seems our Juliet has been swayed by Romeo."

"After everything you've been through, you should know better than to judge a person by their appearance."

"No, it's just… he seems sincere." Lana hesitated. "Maybe we should go to his house?"

The eastern part of Smallville.

Unlike the bustling town center, this area was sparsely populated. The vast, flat plains were dotted with only a few isolated houses.

"Hello? Is anyone home?" Clark and Chloe approached the solitary house.

The small house, built of wooden planks and painted white, looked very old. Many of the planks were weathered and rotten, seemingly ready to collapse with a light push.

"Knock, knock." Lana stepped forward and knocked politely.

But the inside was silent, completely still, as if the owner of the house had long since disappeared.

"Let me."

Clark pursed his lips and took a piece of wire from his pocket.

He fiddled with the wire in the lock for a moment.

"Click."

The previously closed wooden door opened, revealing a silent, dim room.

A sour smell hung in the air, as if the place hadn't been cleaned in ages and had gone moldy.

But the leftover food on the table suggested someone lived here.

"Hello? Is anyone here?" Lana cupped her hands around her mouth, shouting.

Still no response.

Chloe shrugged. "Maybe we should go. No one's here, Byron probably isn't either."

"No, I think there's still a place we haven't checked," Clark said, shaking his head. His gaze swept over the floor.

That was the Kryptonian's advantage. The ability to see through surfaces allowed them to easily spot details others missed.

He stared at the floor, his expression strange. "Byron is right beneath us."

With that, Clark lifted the dirty, rumpled rug on the floor, revealing an iron door set into the floor.

"Oh my God," Lana gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. A bad feeling rose in her chest. "Byron couldn't have been locked in this Cellar by his parents, could he?"

Clark didn't waste any time.

The entrance, bound by iron chains, was nothing more than a gentle tug for him.

A terrifying force ripped the chains apart.

Boom!

Clark opened the Cellar, and the dust that billowed out caused everyone to cover their mouths and noses.

Once the dust settled, a wooden ladder rested quietly inside the Cellar, leading down into complete darkness.

"Byron, are you in there?"

Lana crouched down and called out to the opening, and this time, Byron's voice answered from within.

"Leave me alone, you all need to get out of here!"

His voice sounded urgent and panicked.

But, to Lana, those words were irrefutable proof of Byron's parents' abuse.

"I can't believe it. Byron's parents actually imprisoned their own son."

Lana trembled with anger, immediately wanting to rush down the stairs to see the poor boy.

"Let's go take a look."

Clark was also quite angry.

The group followed the stairs down.

Once they stepped onto the cellar floor, they realized the environment was far worse than they had imagined.

Several kerosene lamps illuminated the cramped space, surrounded by countless books. Besides a small bed, there was nothing else.

And what was even more infuriating was, how could a living person possibly exist in such a gloomy space?

Everyone's gaze fell on the figure lying on the bed, bare-chested.

Byron was covering his face with his hands, the Black Iron Handcuffs on his wrists drawing attention.

"Oh my god, Byron, what did they do to you?"

Clark quickly walked towards Byron, looking at the shackles on Byron's hands with a look of shock: "This is a form of imprisonment."

"No, it's not what you think." Byron shook his head, his body involuntarily backing away.

He had an ominous premonition. These newly made friends might end up harming him.

But Byron's reaction seemed incomprehensible to Lana and the others. The poor guy might have been tormented by his parents for so long that he had already lost his mind.

Lana and Clark exchanged a look and shouted in unison, "No, we have to get you out!"

Without even giving Byron a chance to explain, Clark gently tugged and ripped the chains imprisoning Byron apart.

Then, without further ado, he grabbed the boy's shoulders and dragged him upstairs.

"No, don't do this! I hurt my dad last time I got out," Byron struggled frantically, but how could he escape a Kryptonian's grip?

The poor boy was carried up the stairs by Clark, heading towards the outside. Despite Byron's desperate struggles, Clark's strength was like a raging bull's, leaving Byron utterly unable to resist.

Lana followed behind them, comforting Byron, "We're doing this for your own good. Your parents have been lying to you."

Seeing himself getting closer to the sunlight outside, Byron let out a heart-wrenching cry.

"No, don't!"

Swoosh!

Gentle sunlight, like the all-encompassing radiance of a goddess, bathed Byron.

The warm rays, full of temperature, fell upon Byron's bare torso.

But, what felt warm to everyone else seemed like a deadly poison to Byron.

"Argh!"

Byron howled in agony, collapsing onto the floor as if he'd lost all strength. His arms and legs twitched violently, looking as if he was being electrocuted.

"What, what happened to him?" Lana widened her eyes, confused about what was happening.

Chloe observed the boy's symptoms and offered a theory: "Could it be that he's allergic to sunlight?"

Clark knelt down, a little worried, intending to check on Byron. But he heard Byron roar, "Get out of here! I can't control myself!"
