Chapter 36 - Learning Alchemy

Max slowly completed his tea which soothed his body pains a little and he slowly relaxed in his seat.

Sophia and Iris too slowly completed the tea and got ready to eat some breakfast.

Soon after breakfast was served, they ate it with relish. Once they had finished, Iris asked Max about his plans for the day. She mentioned that she and Sophia had decided to go shopping in the city to unwind and suggested he join them, as it could be fun.

Max, overhearing their plans to go shopping, was instantly reminded of the time Iris had asked him to accompany her. The experience left him trailing behind her all day, carrying loads of bags in his hands, only for the shopping to remain unfinished.

Reminded of the scene, Max immediately shuddered in fright, politely declined her request, and asked if the city had a public library he wanted to visit.

Iris mentioned to him that the castle had a small library, and if he wanted to read some books, he could visit it while they were away.

Max happily accepted her words, asked the maid beside them to guide him to the library, and sprang out of his seat, running like a rabbit escaping a hunt. He didn't want to give them time to come up with reasons to convince him to join their shopping plans.

Seeing Max escaping in hurry made Iris and Sophia laugh again happily and they too asked the butler to get ready the vehicle to drive up to the shopping center.

Max followed the maid who led the way to the top floor, where a small library was located. She opened the library doors, invited him inside, and asked if he needed any refreshments during his stay.

Max thought for a moment and simply asked her to bring him some hot tea and not to disturb him while he was reading.

He then walked into the library while the Maid went to get the tea pot which max has requested.

Max approached a bookshelf titled "The Origin and Truth of the World," which held numerous books detailing the history of the world's creation, the truth behind its chaos, and the various races inhabiting it along with their behaviors.

Max slowly picked up a book called "The Origin" and discovered it was a storybook that narrated how the world came into existence. It explained that the world was a combination of many smaller worlds that had been destroyed, drifted through space, gathered in one place, collided with each other, and eventually formed the current world.

The chaotic ocean is the result of numerous unstable elements caused by world collisions, with fragments of smaller worlds still colliding and merging with the world continuously. This has led to the never-ending chaos on the ocean.

Max put the book back and picked up another one that introduced the various races of the world, only to find it was missing many pages. It mentioned just a few species, like dragons, who are long-lived and arrogant, elves, who are also long-lived but peaceful unless provoked, and orcs, a violent race that hunts others for fun and the satisfaction of defeating them in battle.

The dwarves, skilled in forging weapons and mastering the handling of metals found both on the ocean floor and across the continents, stand out with their craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the demons, known for their violent nature, tend to stay within their own continent, avoiding interaction with other races. They mostly fight amongst themselves, viewing other races as too weak and unworthy of their attention.

The human race, the most populous in the world, was often looked down upon by other races due to their perceived inferior bloodline and lack of proficiency in martial arts or magic. However, in the past thousand years, they have risen significantly, producing many powerful individuals who caught the attention of other races. This progress earned humanity a place in the council of various races to represent themselves.

Human alchemy is a creation that combines elven magic and dwarven ingenuity, blending metals to craft devices that help humans maintain their power on the continent.

The main continent is primarily supplied with alchemy devices by humans, as dwarves excel in shaping metal but not in alchemy, while elves are skilled in magic but lack expertise in metallurgy. This has benefited humans, as they are the most adept at adaptation.

After learning about alchemy, Max developed a growing interest in discovering more about it. He started searching for books related to alchemy and came across a book titled "Introduction to Alchemy" on one of the shelves. The book described the requirements for learning alchemy and revealed that spirit is the main requirement. Without spirit, learning alchemy could take decades, and even then, progress in the subject might be minimal.

As he began to read, the maid quietly approached, placed the teapot beside him, and left without disturbing him.

Max brewed a small cup of tea, settled down with his book, and discovered that alchemy requires the human spirit but is an expensive discipline. The process involves drawing alchemy arrays, which need alchemy solutions, magic cores, or monster cores—materials that are prohibitively expensive for most people. Each core is costly, and once used, it becomes useless, resulting in a net loss. As a result, only the wealthy on the main continent or prodigies in alchemy dare to pursue it.

The book also introduces various small arrays which can be used to get entry into the alchemy.

The various arrays include the heating array, used in houses to maintain warmth during winter; the insulation array, which prevents heat from escaping to maintain a steady temperature; and the cooling array, which cools the surroundings based on its capacity.

The strengthening array enhances the material's durability, making it incredibly sturdy, while the sharpening array, typically associated with weapons, ensures the blade remains sharp in all situations.

There are also illustrations of a wand that can breathe fire when infused with mana.

Max also saw a sword that inflicts bleeding damage, preventing the wound from healing, just like the example in the book.

But perhaps it was meant to encourage students, as the book only describes the picture and not the arrays, since advanced arrays might be required, which do not fall under basic arrays.
