The mere sight of her lingering so close to Valessia made Virema's skin prickle. She couldn't explain why, but Zara's presence was like an itch she couldn't scratch.
"I will excuse myself, Ms. Valessia," Zara murmured just as Virema's lips parted to speak. Rising from her chair, she moved toward the entrance but still gave Virema a polite nod in acknowledgment.
"Yesterday, I had finished dressing up and was about to come stay with you when my grandma called and asked me to visit. It's been ages since I last saw her, and you know I just can't say no to her," Virema said smoothly, her voice soft, her eyes steady. She didn't blink, didn't flinch, lying came to her as easily as breathing.
In truth, her grandmother hadn't called. She hadn't even spoken to the old woman in weeks as a result of her hectic schedule. Virema used the excuse because Valessia knew of their close bond and would believe it without question.
