Varek's voice was low, almost reluctant. "I wish I could stay on the line longer, but unfortunately I can't."
The sweet smile that had been glowing on Evania's face vanished in an instant, replaced by a flicker of disappointment.
"I don't want the Alpha realizing I've been away from my desk too long during office hours," he added. In his mind, he could already picture the disappointed little frown she was probably wearing, and he resisted the urge to laugh.
"I should have known better… This was going to be short-lived. I shouldn't have let myself indulge too much," she grumbled, kicking off her white heel in irritation.
"I'll see you when I get off work," Varek muttered, pausing to hear her voice one last time. But she stayed silent, forcing him to end the call.
"He's got a talent for raising my hopes only to crush them the next minute. What an excellent husband he is," Evania sneered, tightening her grip around the phone until her knuckles whitened.
