"Of course I'm aware of the real truth behind that," Varek said calmly, his tone composed. "But don't forget, the entire pack doesn't know. And because of that, people will assume you're double-minded. This won't just damage your reputation, Alpha. Ms. Valessia might end up paying the price. I don't think you'd want that to happen."
Alpha Lucien's eyes narrowed, suspicion flickering in his gaze. "Why does it feel like you've been subtly trying to manipulate me, Varek?"
"I wouldn't dare," Varek replied instantly. "Everything I've said and done is for the good of the pack… and for you. I'd never suggest anything that could harm you, the pack, or your image."
His hands remained folded neatly behind his back, his posture formal, but his eyes gave away a flicker of unease.
