Chapter 14 - Interrogation

It was the day after the funeral. Memor strolled through the village, heading in the direction of his uncle's cabin, he had not trained with him for many days. After his arrival at the village, his uncle had fixed up his arm and had told him to not find him for training for the next couple of days. Whatever Uncle Ceres was planning was beyond Memor's understanding so he didn't pry, but even if he did, it was very likely he wouldn't get an answer or his question would never come out his mouth as Uncle Ceres would have stolen his thought.

Memor journeyed into the taiga which was north-west of the village, the tall trees wavered in the wind, as Memor watched the edge of where the village and the taiga met.

We got company, huh? Standing between the woods and Memor, Councilor Spyro with his twisted smile wobbled around to some imaginary tunes.

Once Memor was just a few meters away from him, he exclaimed in his usual playful tone."Oh, what a coincidence it is for us to meet here."

Does this never get old to him? I wouldn't believe he was an elder of the village if he acted like this all the time. Memor sighed, and said"How may I help you, Councilor Spyro?"

Spyro tilted and made a pouting expression."Where is the Mori I spoke to last time?"

This guy just likes setting traps, huh? It may not be an offence to disrespect a council member, but what could a normal person do against them if they take it personally. The time he came to my home was unofficial, if he used that as a reason for punishing me, he would have to reveal that he broke into my house at night. Memor didn't respond, as he just bowed respectfully.

"Oh, you're no fun…Come with me."Spyro said as he walked in Memor direction into the village.

Rising from his bow, Memor followed behind and asked."What's this about?"

"Oh, I don't want to ruin the surprise."Spyro said with a smile.

He doesn't want me knowing so I can't prepare, huh? What do you think, Uncle Ceres?

'...Don't worry about it."

Great. Memor thought sarcastically, as he followed Councilor Spyro.

On the way, Memor watched as Spyro gained respectful bows from the citizens of the village, they all had wide smiles on their faces. Unbeknownst to them, the devil Councilor Spyro was, as he reciprocated them with friendly smiles.

At times where no one was bothering them, he rambled about how despicable Ceres was. Of course, not blatantly attacking him, but just picking out parts that he found disdainful in a jestering fashion.

Suddenly Memor had a question."Why don't you just teleport us to the destination?"

"Oh, you overestimate me Mori boy."Spyro said.

Spyro led Memor down the path he came from, passing by the library and reaching Memor's neighborhood.

Are we going to my home? Or is he just playing with me? Following his footsteps, Spyro simply walked into Memor's home as if it was his and sat down at his table.

Walking in, Memor spotted Councilor Vicktor standing by his desk, checking out the books on it bored out of his mind.

"So the kid's finally here, took you long enough." Vicktor said, leaning on the wall and crossing his arms.

"Don't blame me, who told this child to have such little legs."

I think you're just too tall. Memor didn't say anything, he went and sat on his bed and waited for their explanation for dragging him away from training.

Councilor Spyro looked at Memor and revealed."Anyways, you know about the unfortunate passing of Elena, so we just need to interrogate you a slight bit, there is no need to get nervous."

What'd I expect, he was bound to come cause trouble.

'Do not do anything."

Alright…Memor nodded at Councilor Spyro and got into a comfortable seating position on his bed.

Seeing this, Spyro let a wide smile slip onto his face, the disturbing one and said."We'll begin with some simple questions to get a baseline. What's your name?"

Memor."Memor."

"How old are you?"

17."17."

"Where do you live?"His smile somehow twisted higher as he asked the third question.

A house near the edge of the village."At the cabin in the woods."

Huh? What did I just say? Memor looked at the ground, his eyebrows scrunched.

Seeing his reaction, Spyro laughed in his chair, jerking up and down, then he let out a satisfied sigh."Haaa, how wonderful it is to see such a reaction everytime."

"Stop playing around Spyro, and get this over with."Councilor Vicktor urged.

He stole my thoughts! It's different from how Uncle Ceres does it where I just stand with my mind empty. The way he does it is after I have the thought of saying something he steals the idea and the second thing that comes to mind is said! Which usually should be the truth? Is that right?

Now what? Right, Uncle Ceres will take care of it somehow. Memor raised his head as Councilor Spyro began to ask his next question."What were you doing during the attack from the Skrucks."

I was fighting with Elena's team."I was fighting with Elena's team."

He didn't steal that thought, huh?

"Have you or anyone you know threatened Elena's life?"

No, I would never do that-Yes I did."No, I would never do that."

What in the memory is going on…Memor kept his expression straight despite his confusion. Looking at Spyro, he could see the same confusion surfacing on his face for a moment, before it disappeared back to his leisurely and disturbing smile.

Spyro just stole my thoughts so I would tell the truth, and Uncle Ceres placed back what I was going to say in my mind after it was stolen away?

"Have you seen anyone looking at Elena as if they wanted to kill her?"

No, I don't think so-There was a person, even if I didn't see them."No, I don't think so."

Agh, My head is a mess- I was the one that threatened her-WHAT ARE THEY DOING, PLAYING CATCH WITH MY MIND! Memor held a straight face, as his thoughts were being played around with.

Spyro stared at Memor, his eyes squinted in satisfaction as he tortured Memor's mind. "Did you kill Elena?"

Hearing his question, Vicktor pushed himself off the wall he was leaning on and yelled."Spyro! What stupidity is this, how can a mortal boy kill her?!"

"You never know" Spyro turned to Vicktor, then he looked back at Memor expectantly.

No I didn't-I was the reason for her death."No, the Toy Maker did."

"I see."Spyro stated, dragging in his words.

What kind of provocation is this?! Where did all this go when we had tea with him?!

I guess this should be the end of the interrogation."Shall we end this frivolous discussion, I haven't trained today and it's getting late."

Tsk, Uncle Ceres if you want to insult him, please just do it yourself. Memor would have shook his head if he could, but under the watch of Spyro any unnecessary movement should be kept to oneself.

Standing up, Spyro bowed at Memor, rather he bowed at Ceres "It was a nice chat child, but this is goodbye."

Spyro teleported away. Seeing this, Councilor Vicktor shook his head and sighed, then led himself out as well, leaving the door open.

The sun streamed through his doorway, leaving the silence in the room filled with warmth. Memor knew what he had to do, because of what Uncle Ceres made him say to Councilor Spyro, but in that moment the silence was so mesmerizing, it felt like liberation.

He left his home for the cabin in the woods.
