Chapter 16 - Sword Shopping

Memor walked the crowded streets of vendors and customers, the liveliness of the area hitting empty in his ears.

This doesn't make any sense. Memor had been pondering on the fact that the Memory Fragment he just sold was that of Elena's.

When a person dies, their Memory Fragment leaves with them. For the select few that do stick, they are turned into Artifacts and bonds with an object nearby. So how did you do it Uncle Ceres?

'...'

Memor's mind took many guesses as he brushed shoulders against the passerbys making his way to where Luni said would meet him.

If the naturally bonded Artifact is destroyed, the Memory Fragment wouldn't drop, but what if Uncle Ceres creates another vessel for the Memory Fragment and then destroys it afterwards, as it's not naturally bonded anymore? That's a far fetch. I don't know much about Artifacts either.

Hmm could Uncle Ceres have just taken it out of Elena? I mean, he can turn normal memories into a Memory Fragment of sorts just like the proof he showed the hooded person.

In the open square, which was the center of the village, and where the largest of the tents sprung. Memor spotted Luni, chatting with Alara and Demi holding two sticks of barbeque in his hands while Alara and Demi both held one. Extricating himself from his thoughts, Memor approached the unsuspecting Luni.

Tapping him on the shoulder, Luni jumped at the sudden contact, he turned around to find Memor looking at him with a sly smile.

"Tsk, how could you do this to your brother in arms." Luni said, putting on a pitiful face.

Seeing his appearance, Demi's face indiscernibly dropped a slight bit, she then made an excuse."You boys go do whatever you want, me and Alara are going dress shopping, bye bye." her voice peaking at the end.

Disoriented by her sudden proposition, and being dragged away by Demi, Alara mumbled in confusion."What? I thought. Hey! Why you dragging me!"

Before anyone could make sense of the situation, Alara and Demi were gone, looking at each other, speechless, Memor and Luni walked in the other direction, the same direction Memor came from.

Demi really doesn't like me, huh? And, does she even like dresses? She doesn't look like the type. Memor and Luni walked the streets of vendors hawking at their faces.

"It's unfortunate we couldn't do any pranks after we came back."Luni sighed.

"Sadly we can't do them in the next few days either." Memor said.

"What? Why?"Luni questioned.

Looking at Luni, Memor made a face of sadness."I'm not sure, but I heard there was going to be an event in the next few days, if we're caught for fooling around it might get a worse punishment than the one we received from hunting."

Luni shook his head and sighed."Whatever. Oh and here." Luni handed Memor one of the barbeques he was holding.

Taking the skewer, they ate leisurely passing the many stalls.

"Say,"Luni spoke again."You have anything specific you want to buy?"

Memor turned to Luni and asked"Where's this coming from?"

"You know, I just want to keep things in order, first the important things, then we can go around."Luni replied.

I guess Luni has always been like this, even with pranks he does things step by step. Thinking for a bit and biting a piece off the skewer, Memor answered."Hmm, actually there's something."

Luni nodded and followed Memor's lead, they walked down the path Memor came from until they reached the red tent where the golden bell hung on its supporting foot.

Looking at the stand which sold all sorts of weapons, Luni asked"You want to buy a sword? Why'd you need a sword?"

Memor turned to Luni with a bit of a confused expression."You have your own don't you? And, which person wouldn't want to own a sword?"

"Fare enough."

As the vendor of the red draped tent spotted the approaching two, he enthusiastically opened his arms as if waiting for something to fall into his embrace and said."Young lads, could I fancy you in a weapon."

Before Memor and Luni could even reply, the vendor brought out a katana with a normal black wooden handguard and handle, but its blade shimmered against the sun in aqua."Here, the only sword you will ever need."

Luni inspected it and asked in skepticism."What's it made of?"

The vendor's eyes sparkled at the question."Only the strongest metal, Etherium. They use it to make shackles for prisoners, Even a Grade 2 Mnemonist bound by it would not be able to escape."

Luni rubbed his chin and asked in the dumbest impression he could make."So uh, In a fight I should bend the sword around their necks so they wouldn't be able to escape?"

The vendor was baffled, then he tried to explain."No the metal can negate Mnemonist abilities, you don't need to-"

"So just wrap it around their hands?"Luni pushed on.

You play too much man, you play too much.In the background, Memor held his hand to his face and shook his head. Looking around the inside of the red tent, Memor suddenly heard his uncle's voice in his head.

'The feathered jian.'

Memor gaze had just passed that sword, looking back, it was a normal looking sword apart from its blade which had diagonal black streaks sectioning the silver blade into many feather-like shapes.

Looking back at the still arguing vendor, Memor grabbed Luni's shoulder urging him to stop and then said to the vendor."Let me look at that one."Pointing at the jian made of silver feathers.

The vendor retrieved it in a blink, relieved to be freed from Luni's stupid questions."This sword's from the capital, usually those that don't sell over there gets sold to us and we bring it around with us."

Feeling the sword in his hand, it was no different from the jian his uncle creates every time they train. Looking at the vendor, Memor asked."How much?"

Luni butted in."You want to buy that? Why not pick the Etherium blade that supposedly incapacitates your enemy once you wrap it around their legs."

The vendor was just about to correct him, but at the last moment he sighed and shook his head pitifully.

Give this guy a break man. Memor turned to Luni with an expression of amusement and disappointment.

Looking back at the vendor, the vendor realized he hadn't told Memor the price and said."That's 1 silver Crit"

In the Britannia Republic, where Memor lived, they used Copper, Silver, and Gold Crits as currency. 100 Copper Crits equals 1 Silver Crit, and 12 Silvers Crits equal 1 Gold Crit.

Quite expensive for a simple sword, might be because it came from the capital…Uncle Ceres, what's so special about this sword? Memor inspected it more closely, its weight distribution, grip in the hand, and how the length of the blade measures to his body. After all of that he still got no reply from Uncle Ceres.

Sighing internally, Memor took out a piece of gold from the pouch he received from the hooded man and handed it to the vendor.

He didn't haggle as Cafoori Village already owed Sal Village a huge favor, so the prices of all items during their visit was at its lowest. If any vendor decides to cheat their customers, chances are they will be penalized heavily.

The vendor received the Gold Crit and returned 11 Silver Crits. Luni, seeing the amount of money Memor held, didn't question it as he was scared of Uncle Ceres.

After purchasing the sword the vendor handed Memor the black sheath of the sword, then Memor and Luni sauntered away.
