Chapter 7 - Betrayal

Talia:

You hide that from us?

Selby:

Ahh, before you ask any more questions, just take a look behind you both.

(They looked behind and saw a wizard school.)

Calla:

That's a school, right? Like Hogwarts?

Selby:

Ah, yes actually.

(She again holds their hands and they teleport inside the school.)

Talia:

Couldn't you just tell us before this? I was looking at something! And can you tell me — is the school name Hogwarts or something else?

Selby:

Ahh bro, actually Mahō Orvellan is the school's name.

Calla:

Ahh ohh. But…

(At that moment, one professor comes behind them.)

Mr. Scandal:

Ahh girls, is there any problem?

(Talia and Calla turn around.)

Selby:

Ahh no, Professor.

Mr. Scandal:

Ah, you — you are Calla Everhart, right?

Calla:

Ah, yes but—

(Mr. Scandal didn't give Calla a chance to speak; he directly asked Talia then—)

Mr. Scandal:

You? What's your name?

Talia:

Talia Caldwell.

Mr. Scandal:

Caldwell? Ah, is your father's name Stephen Caldwell?

Talia:

Ah, yes.

Mr. Scandal:

Oh, your father was a great wizard. He studied in this school and learned magic under me. But he never told me that he got married or had a daughter. Not just me, I don't think anyone knew.

Talia:

What? My Dad was a wizard?

Mr. Scandal:

Ah, yes.

By the way, Miss Everhart — we did send you letters, but you never responded. I was actually planning to visit you tomorrow, but now that you're here, that's good.

(After saying that, Mr. Scandal just walks away.)

Calla:

What was that? He didn't even listen to me or let me talk! And what letters? I never got any!

And still — why did you hide it from us that your Dad was a wizard?

Talia:

Even I'm just finding out now. I'm as surprised as you are.

Calla:

Ahh… ohh. And what about you, Selby?

Selby:

Okay, let me tell you.

On 6th February, on my 16th birthday, my mom and dad surprised me with the truth — that they're a witch and wizard, and I am too. It's revealed when we turn 16 — till then, we're supposed to live a normal life.

Calla:

Are you kidding me? You found this out on 6th February and didn't tell us?

Selby:

Yes… because my mom and dad said I wasn't allowed to tell anyone. But one day, I found out that you, Calla, were also a witch — when the day came that you were supposed to receive your letter, your wand, and your school uniform… I took them and hid them.

Calla:

Why? You betrayed me?

Selby:

Hey, no no… I didn't betray you, actually!

Calla:

Just stop. I don't want to listen. I just want to go back.

Talia (with a sad face):

Me too.

Selby (in a sad voice):

Okay…

(Selby holds Calla's and Talia's hands, and they teleport back to the cruise, in their room. Calla immediately shakes off Selby's hand and walks out of the room. Selby tries to stop her but she ignores her. Then Talia also starts to go, but Selby, crying, says—)

Selby:

Talia… trust me, I didn't try to betray you. Please… listen to me.

(Talia stops and sits near Selby.)

(Selby starts to cry. Talia hugs her and comforts her, then says:)

Talia:

Tell me everything, I'm here for you. I'll listen. (she smiles)

Selby:

In Orvellan, there are three types of houses — like in Harry Potter there was Slytherin, Gryffindor, etc. But here it's different.

If a person is born to both a wizard and a witch, they go to the Aetherborn — that means Pureblood, like me. The one who is born to one witch or wizard and one normal person goes to the Veilborn — that means Halfblood, like you. And if someone is born to normal parents but is chosen by magic, then they go to the Novaborn — that means Newblood, like Calla.

Talia:

So what's the problem?

Selby:

When I found out that Calla is the chosen one, I was really happy… but then I remembered the story.

Talia:

What story?

Selby:

There was once a Novaborn student in the magical world — no one knows how, but he broke the rules and practiced dark magic. He was like the Voldemort of this school… but a different version. I don't know the full story, but my mom and dad told me to never get too close to a Novaborn, because they can change anytime… And in that moment, I got scared. That's why I hid everything.

Talia:

But then… because Calla didn't respond to the letters, the professor himself was going to visit her, right?

Selby:

Yes… I knew all that, but I didn't think much at that time. I was scared, so I just did it.

Talia:

Okay, okay… don't overthink now. Calla's just angry, she'll talk to you after some time.

Selby:

I hope so…

Talia (smiles reassuringly):

I know Calla. She can't stay mad for too long, especially with you. Just give her some time.

(Calla stood outside on the deck, her arms crossed, staring silently at the endless waves and sky turning orange with sunset. The wind blew her hair gently as her mind raced.)

Calla (thinking):

Talia didn't even come after me… maybe Selby turned her against me too. I thought at least Talia would understand… but no. Maybe I was just being used all this time. They both kept me in the dark…

(She grips the railing tightly, frustration boiling inside her.)

Calla (thinking):

I trusted them. I thought we were best friends… but how could Selby hide something so big? And Talia… she's supposed to be my best friend, yet she stayed back with Selby… not me.

(A tear slips down her cheek but she quickly wipes it off.)

Calla (thinking):

Fine… if they want to be like that, then I'll stay away too. I don't need anyone.

(At that time, Jane comes over and says:)

Jane:

"Girl, we're heading to another island now! We might reach there by night and stay for some time. After that, we'll head to the third island by evening, and then back. I'll drop you three at your house, and then I'll continue my tour."

Calla:

"Okay,"

(she says with a small smile.)

Jane:

"Now call them! We're going for dinner, so come fast, okay?"

Calla:

"Yes!"

(In the room, Talia was teasing Selby and both were laughing loudly. Just then, Calla enters the room.)

Calla (coldly):

"We're going for dinner. Come fast."

Without waiting for a reply, she walks out, her steps heavy with anger.

Talia (looking at Selby, concerned):

"She's still mad…"

Selby (guiltily):

"I know… and she has every right to be."

(At the dinner table, Calla is already seated quietly when Talia and Selby arrive and sit down. A few moments of awkward silence pass while they eat.)

Jane (noticing the tension):

"Ah… what happened? You all are so quiet tonight. No fun stories or teasing?"

Talia (forcing a smile):

"Nothing, Jane. Everything's fine."

Jane (looking at Selby):

"And what about you, Selby? Are you feeling better now?"

(Suddenly, Calla interrupts with a sharp tone.)

Calla:

"Obviously! She is very, very fine."

(Everyone turns quiet, the air grows heavy. After a moment, Calla stands up.)

Calla:

"Jane, I think I'll go back now. I don't know, but I'm not feeling good anymore. And… can we exchange rooms? I want to sleep alone."

Jane (concerned):

"Okay… sure. You can rest in my room, I'll sleep in yours."

Calla:

"Thanks."

(She walks away without looking at Selby or Talia.)

(Selby feels bad after Calla leaves. She quickly finishes her dinner and excuses herself. Reaching the room, she peeks into Jane's room where Calla is supposed to be sleeping. She sees Calla lying on the bed with her back turned. Thinking Calla is asleep, Selby quietly returns to her own room.)

(Later, Talia comes into the room and notices Selby sitting quietly, deep in thought.)

Talia:

"Selby, don't worry too much. Just sleep for now, okay?"

Selby (softly):

"Yeah…"

(Time passes, and Jane eventually comes in, sees them both lying on their beds, and switches off the light.)

Jane:

"Goodnight, girls."

Selby and Talia:

"Goodnight."

(But in Jane's room, Calla isn't actually asleep. She's lying with her eyes open, thinking about Selby's betrayal and Talia not coming to her.)

(In their own room, Selby is still awake, thinking about Calla — worried, sad, and guilty. Meanwhile, Talia stares at the ceiling, her mind drifting back to memories of her Dad.)

(All three of them are awake, each consumed by their own thoughts — heavy, emotional, and tangled in feelings of hurt, guilt, and longing.)
