Chapter 39 - BUTZ: Chapter 39

He only knew that he could continue until utter exhaustion.

Sweat dripped, soaking his Shihakushō and the warped clock face beneath his feet.

"How many levels?"

Kyōraku Callum felt his spiritual pressure being depleted, his consciousness growing hazy.

Fueled by the power surge from the amplification, he'd been focused on the thrill of increased strength, neglecting the fact that he hadn't yet mastered it.

Crack!

Kyōraku Callum instinctively stepped onto the next step, ignoring the sound of shattering bone beneath his foot.

Strangely, his foot instantly healed, as if an invisible hand had mended it.

He continued to the next step.

Crack!

The immense pressure shattered the bones in his foot again, only to be instantly healed by the same strange force. This continued for dozens of steps!

CRASH!

A violent shattering sound from his legs jolted Kyōraku Callum back to full awareness from his stupor.

"Hiss!" His eyes widened, gasping. "What the hell just happened?"

He still didn't understand what had occurred, but he saw the shattered bones in his legs slowly mending under some strange force.

"This..." Kyōraku Callum's eyes widened as he observed the scene intently. His heart pounded, an overwhelming urge rising within him.

"Alright, let's get out of the Zanpakutō space."

Suppressing his excitement, he left the space.

Back in his body, Kyōraku Callum felt profound exhaustion, a bone-deep weariness emanating from his soul. He was too weak to even lift a finger.

Realizing his surroundings, he closed his eyes and fell backward.

He awoke to sunlight streaming into the barracks.

"What in the world did I do in the Zanpakutō space last night?"

The memory of that soul-crushing exhaustion sent a shiver down his spine. He also noticed a change in his Zanpakutō.

"Next, let's try out these new abilities."

To be safe, Kyōraku Callum activated time stop again. Each use drained a significant amount of spiritual pressure. Even with the amplification, he couldn't sustain many uses.

Holding his long Zanpakutō, he focused an incredible amount of spiritual pressure into his fingertips.

"Rewind time, Shikai!"

The new Shikai command felt like opening a pressure valve.

The released spiritual pressure surged from his body into his Zanpakutō like a raging torrent.

The immense drain left Kyōraku Callum pale, but his current spiritual pressure level could still handle it.

His keen observation skills picked up changes in his surroundings.

Centered on him, time began to flow backward.

The regeneration of spiritual particles, the throbbing in his brow... To his annoyance, his own state was also being rewound.

His head, which had already healed, started throbbing again.

The rewind stopped; his spiritual pressure was almost completely depleted.

Kyōraku Callum observed that everything around him had been rewound approximately one minute.

"An incredible ability," he murmured, deciding against further experimentation.

Besides time stop, he now had another powerful trump card, and countless combat strategies came to mind. This gave him more confidence facing Aizen.

Sheathing his Zanpakutō, he rested to recover his spiritual pressure before leaving the barracks.

Captain Unohana's task was monumental. To improve the 4th Division, he needed to address the root problems. He decided to start by reforming his 6th Medical Squad.

Training Ground #3.

The 6th Medical Squad members looked around in confusion, unsure why their lieutenant had gathered them.

Once everyone had assembled, Kyōraku Callum approached.

"Captain Unohana is dissatisfied with the 4th Division's current state and has tasked me with reforming it. You are the beginning of that reform."

He cut to the chase.

"Hanatarō Yamada!" Kyōraku Callum's voice became serious.

"Yes!" Yūsuke, the Shinigami who had guided Kyōraku Callum, was rather introverted.

"Effective immediately, you are the vice-captain of the 6th Medical Squad."

Hesitation flickered across Hanatarō Yamada's face; he worried about his ability to handle the role.

Kyōraku Callum's sharp gaze caused Hanatarō Yamada to shiver, his hair standing on end. Remembering the lieutenant's recent achievements, he hesitated no longer.

His forceful response surprised his fellow squad members.

"Good, very spirited," Kyōraku Callum said, approvingly, beginning his plan. "I've considered many options for improving the 4th Division, but discarded them all, leaving only one."

The 6th Squad members stared intently at Kyōraku Callum, awaiting his next words.

Kyōraku Callum cleared his throat. "That is, increasing strength! Dignity is earned, not given. The 4th Division has advantages other divisions lack."

Confusion spread across their faces.

The 4th Division was known as the weakest, primarily responsible for logistics and emergency medical care.
