Chapter 27: Running to Stand Still – Christmas Chaos (REMAKE )
"Seriously, guys?" Adam exclaimed, throwing his hands up in exasperation. "It's Christmas! The one time of year when we're supposed to be binging terrible holiday movies and eating too many cookies. And instead, we've got a villainous triple threat? Mark Mardon, Captain Cold, and the Trickster? It's like Santa's naughty list threw up all over Central City."
The Cortex was a whirlwind of activity. News reports blared about a city-wide snowstorm (courtesy of Mardon), a frozen bank vault (Snart's signature), and a series of exploding Christmas presents (definitely Trickster). Barry was already suiting up, vibrating with a mix of frustration and determination.
" It's like Santa's naughty list threw up. But hey, a mission's a mission. And Wally! Oh, the future trouble that kid is going to get into. And the future speedster skills I might get from him. Priorities, Adam, priorities."
"Adam, this is serious," Joe said, his face grim. "They're holding the city hostage."
"I know, Joe, I know," Adam sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I'm just saying, a little holiday cheer would be nice. Maybe they could, like, rob a bank with a festive jingle? Or freeze a giant ice sculpture instead of a vault?"
Suddenly, the System hummed, a new notification flashing in his mental interface.
[SYSTEM ALERT: NEW MISSION AVAILABLE!][MISSION: HOLIDAY HAVOC CONTROL][OBJECTIVE: Minimize Civilian Casualties During Holiday Mayhem (Current: High). Ensure the Capture of All Rogues Without Fatalities (Current: 0/3).][REWARD: $500,000 + Temporary 'Battlefield Awareness' Buff (24 hours)][FAILURE: Temporary 'Naughty List' Debuff (Reduced Luck for 48 hours)]
Adam grinned. "Alright, System, you're speaking my language. A mission! See, guys? It's not just chaos; it's a structured objective! My holiday spirit is on overdrive… just kidding, it's mostly panic and a thirst for efficiency. And a massive cash reward."
He turned to the team. "Okay, here's the deal. Mardon's going to try to create a blizzard to cover their escape. Snart will focus on the valuables, and Trickster's all about the chaos and distractions. We need to split up. Barry, you take Mardon. Cisco, Caitlin, you focus on containing the Trickster's gadgets. Joe, you and I will coordinate from the ground, focusing on civilian evacuation and anticipating Snart's moves. My 'Urban Navigation' is telling me he's going to hit the city's main power grid next."
Joe looked at him, surprised. "The power grid? Why?"
"Blackout," Adam explained, gesturing vaguely. "No power, no security systems. Classic Snart. Plus, it'll plunge the city into darkness, which is very dramatic. And very 'Trickster.'"
As they prepared to deploy, a new figure walked into the Cortex. Tall, lanky, with a wary look in his eyes. Wally West. Iris's brother. Adam felt a jolt of recognition. The future Kid Flash.
"Iris, who's this?" Joe asked, a surprised look on his face.
"Dad, this is Wally," Iris said, a strained smile on her face. "My brother."
Adam offered Wally a friendly, if slightly too enthusiastic, wave. "Wally! Great to finally meet you! Welcome to the circus. Hope you like explosions and talking gorillas. And occasional accidental time travel. It's a lot, I know."
Wally just stared at him, bewildered. "Who are you?"
"Adam Stiels," he replied. "Unofficial consultant, part-time intern, full-time chaos magnet. And a very good friend of your sister. And your dad. And Barry. Basically, I'm family. Just… the weird cousin. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a city to save from a very festive villain team-up."
He joined Joe on the ground, guiding him through the chaotic streets. His 'Enhanced Observation' and 'Urban Navigation' were invaluable, allowing them to anticipate the Rogues' moves and direct emergency services to critical areas. He spotted a group of civilians trapped under a collapsing awning, directing firefighters to them. He saw a rogue exploding present about to land near a family, yelling a warning that saved them.
" This is actually kind of fulfilling. No dying, just… being useful. Who knew? And Wally. He's got that restless energy. That need to help. He's gonna be a great speedster. Just gotta make sure he doesn't get himself killed too much. That's my job."
The battle was intense. Barry struggled against Mardon's blizzard. Cisco and Caitlin managed to disarm most of Trickster's bombs. Joe and Adam successfully evacuated the power grid before Snart could freeze it, forcing him to improvise.
In the end, all three Rogues were apprehended, albeit after causing significant damage. Barry was exhausted, but triumphant.
[SYSTEM ALERT: MISSION COMPLETE! 'HOLIDAY HAVOC CONTROL' SUCCESSFUL!][REWARD: $500,000 + Temporary 'Battlefield Awareness' Buff (24 hours) GRANTED!]
Adam felt a surge of satisfaction. "Mission accomplished! Who knew diplomacy was a superpower? And look, a little bonus cash. Now I just need to find more reasons to… not die. For a change."
Joe clapped him on the shoulder, a rare, genuine smile on his face. "You did good, Adam. Really good. You saved a lot of people today."
"Just doing my part, Detective," Adam said, beaming. "Someone's gotta keep Central City from becoming a giant, frozen, exploding fruitcake. And hey, maybe next year, we can convince them to just send us gift cards. Much less messy."
He glanced at Wally, who was still observing everything with a quiet intensity. Adam knew his future. And he knew he'd be there to guide him, just like he guided Barry. This was his new family. And he wouldn't trade it for anything. Even if it meant dealing with exploding Christmas presents.
