Chapter 29: Legends of Today – Hawkgirl and Hawkman (REMAKE )
The S.T.A.R. Labs Cortex was a whirlwind of confusion, excitement, and a healthy dose of "what the actual hell?" Barry had brought two new people to the lab: a seemingly normal barista named Kendra Saunders, and a very intense, very ancient-looking man named Carter Hall. And they were being hunted by an immortal lunatic with a penchant for ancient weaponry.
" Okay, this is it. The big one. The crossover! Hawkgirl! Hawkman! And Vandal Savage! This is like Christmas, but with more stabbing. And a chance for me to get a really cool, ancient superpower. 'Minor Longevity'? Yes, please! I'm tired of worrying about my retirement plan."
Adam was practically vibrating with excitement. "So, let me get this straight," he said, trying to contain his inner fanboy. "You two are, like, reincarnated ancient Egyptian warrior-priests? And you've been fighting this Vandal Savage guy for, like, thousands of years? And he just keeps coming back? That's… that's amazing! And terrifying! But mostly amazing!"
Kendra looked bewildered. Carter looked grim. Barry looked exhausted.
"Adam, this is serious," Barry said, running a hand through his hair. "Vandal Savage is incredibly dangerous. He's immortal."
"I know, Barry, I know," Adam said, waving a dismissive hand. "But think of the implications! The history! The sheer, unadulterated lore! And hey, if anyone knows about coming back from the dead, it's me. Though, my methods are a little less… mystical. And a lot more painful."
He looked at Vandal Savage, who was currently making a dramatic entrance on the news, destroying a building with an ancient dagger. " Okay, Vandal. You're even more menacing in person. And you've got that whole 'ancient evil' vibe down pat. Don't disappoint me. I'm counting on you for some sweet, sweet skill points."
Adam knew this was his chance. A death from Vandal Savage. An immortal, ancient killer. The skill he could get from him would be invaluable. Longevity. Historical insight. Something that would set him apart.
He also saw Cisco, looking at Kendra with a mixture of awe and awkwardness. "Hey, Cisco," Adam nudged him. "You know, Kendra's really into… coffee. And, like, ancient artifacts. You should totally go talk to her. My 'Enhanced Deception Detection' is telling me she's totally into your geeky charm."
Cisco, blushing, mumbled something about needing to check the security feeds. Adam just grinned. He was playing matchmaker, even in the middle of an impending apocalypse.
They tracked Savage to a museum, where he was attempting to steal an ancient artifact. Barry and Oliver (who had arrived, looking predictably grumpy) were already engaging him. Savage was powerful, skilled, and utterly ruthless. He fought with the weight of millennia behind him.
"He's too strong!" Oliver's voice crackled over the comms. "He just keeps coming!"
Adam saw his chance. Savage was focused on Barry and Oliver, a whirlwind of ancient blades and modern speed. He needed to get close. He needed to make Savage kill him.
He spotted an ancient, ceremonial spear, knocked loose from a display. He deliberately "tripped," falling directly into Savage's path, grabbing the spear as he went down. He knew Savage would react. He knew Savage would kill him.
" Alright, Vandal. You want to play with ancient weapons? Fine. Just make it quick. And make it count. I've got a system to level up, and your powers look very appealing."
Savage, seeing the human obstacle, reacted with brutal efficiency. He swung his dagger, a blur of ancient steel. Adam felt the searing pain, the impossible cold of the blade piercing his chest. He felt himself crumple, the world fading to black.
[SYSTEM ALERT: DEATH DETECTED. CAUSE: BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA (VANDAL SAVAGE).][LIVES REMAINING: 4/5 (Current Life Activated)][DEATHS ACHIEVED: 2/25 (Next System Level: Level 6)]
[SKILL ACQUISITION: 'MINOR LONGEVITY' HAS BEEN UNLOCKED!][DESCRIPTION: Grants a subtle, passive enhancement to lifespan and resistance to age-related ailments.]
Adam gasped, his eyes snapping open. He was back in his apartment, disoriented but alive. He felt a strange, subtle hum in his veins, a faint echo of timelessness. He looked at his hand, and for a split second, he felt like he could see the faint echoes of countless years, countless lives. It was like he'd just downloaded a very old, very long history book directly into his soul.
" 'Minor Longevity'! Yes! Now I can finally outlive all my bad decisions! And maybe even see the end of 'The Simpsons'! Take that, aging process! And Vandal, you magnificent, murderous immortal, you just made me even harder to kill. Thanks, buddy!"
He quickly changed, his heart still hammering. He raced back to the museum. Savage was gone, having escaped with the artifact. Barry and Oliver looked grim, but also relieved.
"Adam!" Oliver exclaimed, his voice gruff with concern. "You're alive! We saw Savage…!"
"Yeah, well, turns out I'm surprisingly resilient to ancient daggers," Adam feigned, rubbing his chest. "Must be my 'enhanced common sense' kicking in, telling me to get out of the way of homicidal immortals. But hey, he's definitely immortal. And he's got a thing for ancient artifacts. And he's probably going to try to blow up the world. Again. It's kind of his thing."
He glanced at Cisco, who was now awkwardly trying to talk to Kendra. Adam smiled. The seeds were planted. For friendship. For romance. And for a future team of time-traveling misfits. He was playing the long game. And he was getting stronger, one ancient death at a time.
