Deimos’ horn woke him up. Ares slowly opened his eyes and looked around. He was standing riveted in the middle of the scene of carnage where everyone ate up and killed each other and crushed their bones.
Soldiers with no faces swung their swords and pushed their shields without identifying friends or foes and focused on destroying each other. On top of their heads, papyrus sheets with numbers written down were floating, instead of the hard helmets used for pressure point protection. Every time the counterparts in front of them fell down, the numbers on top of their heads changed. The highest was ninety-eight.
A soldier whose number just increased to ninety-nine tore off the head from the dead body and raised it high up in the air, giving out a loud shout. Like a savage man-eater, madness dominated his body.
