Chapter 28 - Ashes and Afterglow

Lucien reclined in a slightly cracked, sun-dappled chair, one boot up on the table as villagers bustled nervously around them. The formerly-brainwashed were being gently ushered through magical diagnostics by X'zelle, Ignara, and the twins, who were somehow managing to make bureaucracy look flirty.

Probably the matching tank tops and dangerously short skirts.

"I'm telling you," Ignara said, holding a clipboard and a glass of wine, "half these guys were already idiots before the brainwashing. Some of these thoughts I'm reading are voluntarily empty."

"Don't roast them too hard," X'zelle muttered, tapping her fingers as she probed a big, grizzled mercenary's aura. "This guy just mistook me for his childhood dog. Which, I mean, flattering… but still."

Nearby, Lucien sat with Veyra, Val, and Serenith at a wooden table shaded by a tattered awning. A gust of wind brought the scent of roasted meat and baked root vegetables… someone in the village still remembered how to cook.

The Lamia woman slithered up gracefully, balancing a tray of food and drinks with far more elegance than a recent would-be assassin had any right to. An enchanted silver collar around her neck shimmered faintly, glowing with Veyra's binding command sigils.

"My lady," she purred, bowing low enough to show off the full length of her coil. "Your midday refreshments…"

Veyra yanked a goblet from the tray and snarled, "You think this makes up for trying to work me like a meat puppet, scale tits?"

The Lamia flinched, head bowed. "I apologize deeply, mistress. I exist only to serve now. I'll do better."

"Go. Away," Veyra snapped, eyes smoldering like wildfire. The Lamia slithered back with a muted squeak.

Lucien sighed and sipped his drink. "Veyra, you've got to at least try to work with Selena. She's… part of the team. Kind of. Like a cute, scaly intern."

"She made me try to gut you, sire."

"I've had worse dates," Lucien shrugged. "Besides, everyone deserves a second chance. Even emotionally manipulative snake women."

The Lamia returned and bowed again, this time directly in front of Lucien, tail coiled like a spring. "I just want to say how grateful I am, my lord, for your mercy. I will do whatever it takes to bring you joy. Anything."

Lucien chuckled, one brow arching. "That's sweet, but I'm not the one you need to impress." He gestured subtly at Veyra, who was still glaring like she was trying to incinerate the Lamia with her gaze alone.

The Lamia gulped and slunk away, whispering apologies.

"Still not trusting her," Veyra muttered, crossing her arms.

"I'd be disappointed if you did," Lucien said with a grin. "But keep her alive. She might be useful."

Val, polishing his claws with a bone shard, grunted. "If she poisons anything, I'm eating her. Slowly."

"You say that about everything," Serenith said dryly, floating next to the table with her arms crossed.

"I mean it this time."

Lucien stood and dusted off his coat. "Alright. That's enough diplomacy and PTSD debriefing. I've got an urgent training session with the Void-Mother."

Serenith raised a perfect silver eyebrow. "Training? Is that what we're calling it now?"

Lucien grinned. "Yes. Magical theory is best absorbed while thoroughly absorbing… something else, if you catch my drift."

Val yawned. "Ugh. You two better come back stronger. We've got a damn road trip soon and I expect high-level nonsense."

"Don't worry," Lucien said, stretching. "By the time we're done, I'll practically be glowing."

Back in Lucien's royal tent, he barely had time to light a summoning candle before the air split with a low hum and a swirling, violet portal devoured him whole.

Serenith floated after him with a martyred groan.

The Void twisted around them, impossible geometry folding and unfolding. Tentacles of ink and shadow slithered past them like bored cats.

When the color finally stabilized, they landed inside the Void-Mother's home, now a nonsensical combination of baroque architecture, rippling astral silk, and unsettling softness that seemed to breathe underfoot.

And there she was.

The Void-Mother, radiant as always, lounging on a throne made of moaning shadows and velvet dreams. She wore a translucent nightgown that might've once been called clothing by the loosest definition.

"You were gone longer than I liked," she cooed, standing slowly. "But I knew you wouldn't resist forever, my little lord of ash."

Lucien bit his lip, eyes trailing every curve. "You know why I'm here."

"To pound me into the ninth plane of pleasure until my hips forget geometry?"

Serenith groaned audibly behind him. "Oh, for stars' sake…"

Lucien raised a finger. "Actually, no. Today is for training."

The Void-Mother pouted genuinely. "Training? You're passing up a chance to bathe in my essence for… homework?"

He stepped forward, sliding a hand along her waist. "Homework with you. See, you're the source of the Ashlands' magic. The primal essence of this place. I need to learn to use that magic properly… refined, precise. And who better to teach me than its sexy, eldritch creator?"

She blinked. Then laughed a sound like shattering mirrors and lullabies. "You truly are unlike any demon lord before you. Most of your predecessors relied on rage, fear, or chaotic lust. You… you actually think."

"I have spreadsheets," Lucien said proudly.

"You may actually be dangerous," she purred, tracing a finger down his chest. "Very well. I'll teach you. But don't think I'm not claiming my payment."

"Wouldn't dream of denying you," Lucien said, already loosening his jacket.

Serenith threw up her hands. "Fine! But I want a full buffet this time before you disappear into that impossible perversion puzzle room again!"

The Void-Mother snapped her fingers, and a buffet spread appeared nearby. Roasted meats, exotic fruits, something that looked like a cake made of stars, and several glistening tentacles offering fondue forks.

Serenith sighed, grabbed a turkey leg, and slumped into a glowing beanbag that emitted gentle moaning sounds.

Lucien turned to the Void-Mother, eyes gleaming. "Shall we begin?"

She giggled. "To the bedroom!"

Hours Later… or was it days?

Time meant very little inside the Void. But Lucien emerged from the bedroom, glowing faintly with embers under his skin. His eyes burned silver, his fingertips trailing ash sigils that wrote themselves in the air.

He stretched, shirtless and smirking. "So. I learned how to better manipulate the ash into solid constructs now. Spears, shields, even basic illusions. Oh, and floating sigil grenades."

The Void-Mother strolled out after him, looking thoroughly wrecked and delighted.

"You learned fast. Faster than most mortals should. But I suspect you're a little more than mortal now, aren't you?"

Lucien winked. "That's between me and the gods who woke me up in the first place."

Serenith tossed a grape into her mouth. "Well, congrats on becoming slightly less useless. Can we go now?"

Lucien walked over, scooped up a handful of dream-fruit, and tossed one to her. "We're just getting started. Still got lots to learn."

The Void-Mother slumps down onto her throne with a dreamy sigh. "Never knew teaching could be so… strenuous." she chuckles as she stretches lazily.

Serenith groaned, dropping back into the bean bag.

"Better get comfortable." Lucien smirked, handing her a glass of wine. "This may take a while."
