Chapter 33 - Rock, Paper, Fist Fight

Veyra strutted out of the tent the next morning like she'd just conquered a kingdom.

And in a way, she had.

Her armor was back on, but her hair was wild and loose, lips slightly bruised, and there was a certain saunter to her hips that screamed victory. She practically radiated post-coital smugness.

At the edge of the camp, Valgereth stood with arms crossed and eyes narrowed, clearly waiting. She gave him a sunny smile.

"Morning, uncle dragon," she cooed, giving him a slap on the thigh. "Lovely day to terrorize the countryside, don't you think?"

Val's eyebrow twitched. "Where's your demon lord?"

"Still alive... somehow," Veyra smirked, skipping off toward breakfast like she hadn't tried to rip said demon lord in half a few hours ago.

A moment later, Lucien stumbled out of the tent, shirtless, half-dressed, and looking like a man who fought a pack of werewolves and lost. Serenith followed close behind, expression neutral… until Lucien tried to beg.

"Please," he groaned, clutching his lower back. "Just a little healing. Or a stamina potion. Or a temporary new body. Anything."

Serenith folded her arms and shook her head slowly. "Suffer your choices."

"I saw my life flash before my eyes... twice. Once when she choked me and once when she screamed something in Elvish while…" He stopped. "Ugh. That girl is a monster."

Serenith doubled over with laughter.

Before Lucien could even find his pants, Val stormed forward, snatched him by the nape, and dragged him toward the stables.

"We are leaving," Val growled. "Now. I don't care if you're bleeding, broken, or boneless."

Lucien flailed weakly. "Just ten more minutes of life, please."

"No."

"I haven't even—"

A nearby window slammed open with the bang of a war drum. Vex and Vile leaned out, hair a mess, matching aprons dusted with flour and scorch marks.

"Breakfast in five!" they chimed in unison.

Val stopped in his tracks.

"…Well," he said, releasing Lucien. "You can't ride on an empty stomach. That would barbaric."

--------------

They gathered around a long wooden table on the inn's balcony, now commandeered by the team as a temporary war council. Platters of eggs, roasted vegetables, crispy meats, and freshly baked elven bread covered the table. Vex and Vile zipped in and out, refilling drinks and occasionally hand-feeding Lucien just for the fun of it.

Lucien stretched with a groan, finally looking half-regal again. "Status reports. Let's hear 'em."

Ignara was first, sipping something dark and bitter. "Finances are holding, but barely. We've got coin coming in from the mines and the eastern towns, but without trade routes we're bleeding potential." She threw a look at Valgereth. "A little more capital injection wouldn't kill us."

Val, elbows deep in ribs, snorted. "I've already invested more gold than most kingdom's yearly budget. You'll get more when you secure a trade route."

Lucien raised a brow. "So you're saying your horde does have a bottom?"

Val wiped his hands with a silk napkin, scowling. "None you'll ever see."

X'zelle and Alexel were next, the former with a clipboard, the latter picking at a stack of pancakes.

"Logistics are improving," X'zelle said, flipping a page. "We've stabilized five villages, set up regular food drops, and our recruitment efforts have doubled since Vex and Vile started their propaganda tours."

Alexel nodded. "Construction-wise, we've got roads forming between the Ashlands core and the southern ridge. Still need bridges for a few rivers though. And roofs. And half a mountain cleared. But we're on schedule."

"Roughly," added X'zelle.

Lucien smiled. "Good. Keep pushing."

Vex and Vile skipped over, flanking him with matching proud grins.

"Morale is at an all-time high!" Vex chirped.

"The people love you," Vile purred. "Especially the way you solved the corruption in that border town with both diplomacy and decapitation."

He sighed. "Speaking of which… I need to check the Balance. Serenith?"

She flicked her hand, summoning a glowing, shifting graph that hovered over the center of the table. The Balance Reading shimmered in elegant elven script.

[Current World Balance: 10.3%]

A slow but steady climb.

Lucien frowned. "Only one percent gain since we started."

Serenith shrugged. "It's not a race. You're reforming kingdoms, not baking a pie."

Val slapped the table and tossed a cleaned femur to the floor. "Enough talk. Let's do something. There are lands to conquer, alliances to forge, and hopefully a few nobles we can terrify into paying taxes."

Lucien grinned and stood. "Right. Vex, Vile… travel kits ready?"

"Packed and stacked!" Vex said.

"And filled with snacks!" Vile added.

Lucien and Val led the way toward the waiting caravan at the edge of the village, a line of reinforced carriages and ash-beast mounts.

-----------------

By late afternoon the next day, they reached the eastern edge of the Ashlands and settled at a forgotten, overgrown military outpost left to rot under moss and memories.

The group set up camp under a cracked stone archway, lighting enchanted lanterns and dragging out supplies. Dinner was modest but warm. X'zelle insisted on cooking, desperate to show off her culinary talents to Lucien.

It mostly worked. Nothing caught fire.

As the sun dipped behind the jagged ridges, Ignara slid up to Lucien with a tray of pillows, blankets, a mug of something spiced, and her best seductive smile.

"Anything else you need?" she asked, settling onto a cushion beside him. "A warm lap? A massage? My undying devotion?"

Lucien smiled lazily. "Ohhh… very tempting."

X'zelle stormed over, nearly knocking over a pot of stew. "I brought him food. I should get lap rights first."

"You cooked it," Ignara snapped. "He survived eating it. That's not seduction… that's bravery."

Lucien rubbed his temples. "Girls—"

"I have a very flexible spine," X'zelle said, lifting her leg onto the table dramatically.

"I have very soft thighs," Ignara countered, pulling Lucien's head toward her lap.

Lucien mumbled, "This is escalating quickly."

The two glared at each other. "Challenge?"

"Challenge."

Lucien sat up, eyes narrowing. "I am not refereeing a duel to the death."

"Oh, not death," X'zelle said. "First one knocked out?"

"Fists only. No magic." Ignara offered.

Lucien sighed. "Nope! No bloodshed. We'll settle this like true warriors of the Void."

They blinked at him.

"…Rock. Paper. Scissors."

Blank stares followed.

"It's a game. With your hands. Like this." He held out his fist and demonstrated. "Rock beats scissors. Scissors beat paper. Paper beats rock."

"Wait… paper beats rock?" Ignara looked scandalized. "That makes no sense!"

"That's the point," Lucien muttered.

He walked them through a few rounds, and to his shock, they got into it fast. Soon they were howling at each other, accusing one another of cheating, shouting "Best of five!" and demanding rematches.

By the time night had fully fallen, the entire camp had been sucked into the chaos.

Even Val got involved, thundering "ROCK!" with the passion of a dragon general, despite still losing three rounds in a row to Vex's smug "Paper."

Lucien sat back, watching his ridiculous, beautiful, dangerous crew laughing like children in the firelight.

A moment of peace.

A pause between madness.

He smiled to himself.

The Ashlands might still be a broken mess, his body sore from feral elf love, and the Balance increasing painfully slowly…but this… this was his life now.

And maybe, just maybe, he'd make it work.
