Chapter 1 - show yourself

"Where is she?" Maximus asked with fury.

It was so obvious that he was angry. He was a very powerful demon who had lived for more than twenty centuries, but he was not the vampire king, nor was he related to the demon royal. He was just an ordinary demon who possessed many abilities.

"I don't know! I don't know, please let me go, I did nothing wrong!" a woman cried as she knelt with trembling knees. She was a pureblooded vampire. She usually abducted demons and gave them to a witch to make pills to keep her son celibate, as that was the only way her son could stay alive.

"You still don't want to spill the truth, huh? Seems like you want to die," said Maximus as a wicked smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He was very dangerous, and everyone knew that. Not even the king of demons would toy with him.

"No, please let me go! I'm not lying, I did nothing wrong at all," she didn't want to accept it. She knew the kind of person Maximus was.

There came a time when a dragon king fought against him and almost killed him, but a demon girl saved him when everyone thought he was gone. And now, he had fallen in love with the girl. The two of them had been together for the past ten years, only for her to go missing three years ago. He had searched and swore to search until the end of the world. He must find her, or he would cause trouble for this world. No one would be at peace if he didn't find his Anne.

Maximus's expression darkened. He glared at the woman and then signaled one of his men to bring her son.

Daniella was passing by and saw what was happening. She quickly hid behind a tree as she peeped through it to listen.

She saw them bring out a young vampire who was about twelve. They made the boy kneel.

"Please let my son go, he has nothing to do with this," the woman sobbed. Daniella used her hand to cover her mouth, making sure nothing left her lips.

'What is happening here?' she questioned herself in her mind. Her stepmother had sent her to get some herbs, only for her to come and meet this horrible scene.

Tears rolled down the woman's cheeks as she tried to beg.

There was no way out. Not when he had her and her son, and even if she told him, he would still kill both of them.

"For the last time, where is she?" Daniella heard a male voice speak. She couldn't get a clear view of his face.

'Who the hell is he even? Why is he doing this?' she thought with widened eyes.

And soon, the boy's head was separated from his neck. Daniella let out a little sound. She was now scared and shocked to her bone marrow.

'What did that boy even do? Why would they kill him like that? Such a cute little boy,' Daniella was very angry to the core.

"My son, my son!" the woman cried as she rushed to where her son lay lifeless.

"You monster! How dare you!" the woman fumed at Maximus, who kept an unreadable expression.

"You don't want to spill? You're next then," Max said as he signaled his men, who grabbed the woman, using a needle-like object to remove her fingernail.

"Ah!" the woman screamed in pain. She felt like dying.

'Oh no! What do I do?' Ella asked herself; she couldn't stand it anymore.

'I should leave,' said Ella to herself.

'But how?' There was no way she could leave like this. It was already getting dark, and if she didn't leave now, the creatures of the night (vampires) would surely hunt her down. She was just a human and nothing more. She didn't even know how to kill a fly, let alone fight a vampire.

"You are a wicked and heartless thing!" Ella heard the woman scream in anger.

"If you want to know, then I'll just tell you! Your woman was killed by me! I used her bones as pills for my son," she spat. There was no use in hiding when she knew she wouldn't leave this place alive.

Maximus's heart boiled beneath his chest. The only woman he ever loved, the one who mended his broken heart, was now gone because of this woman in front of him.

Though he was angry, from how Ella was seeing it, he seemed unaffected by any of this.

Maximus walked to where the woman was and bent down. That was when Ella saw his face.

'Maximus?!' She was in shock.

'Ok, ok, I'm not safe here!' she panicked, but she tried to keep calm. She tried to control her calm, but her heart pounded harder and harder.

'I'm dead! I'm dead,' she cried inwardly. It was a fifty-fifty chance if she would live or die today. Number one, it was already dark, and even if she tried to sneak out without them noticing her (which was simply impossible), she would still end up meeting vampires who would use her as a meal of the night.

Number two, it was a fifty-fifty chance if Maximus would see her or not because if he did, there was a ninety-ten chance she could survive in his hands or not.

Number three, if they didn't notice her, creatures of the night would still kill her here as this was the forbidden forest.

Number four, if she succeeded and reached home, her wicked stepmother would still beat her up and starve her.

Right now, her life depended on whether she would live or die.

And soon, Maximus grabbed the woman's neck and lifted her up in the air. She was a pureblooded vampire but could do nothing as this was a demon here. Maximus's fingernails dug into her neck.

"Go to hell," he said as the woman tried to wriggle free. He pulled out the woman's neck bone as blood poured on the floor. The woman dropped to the ground in death.

Daniella's eyes widened even more as she tried to keep her beating heart at bay.

'Ok, ok, Ella, you should leave,' she said to herself, intending to move a muscle.

"Show yourself," the voice cut through the air. A husky voice that could make someone run in fright.

Ella froze, unsure of what he was referring to.

"The girl behind the tree, show yourself," this time he made it clear it was her.

'All my life I've tried to survive! And now I'll die? Let me just accept my fate, death is the answer to it all,' she said in her mind as she slowly came out, shivering like a hen that had slept under the rain overnight.

As soon as she saw Maximus, her knees began shaking. He was too handsome for her to look at him for two seconds.

She had always heard of this guy and had only seen him on TV shows. Now… here she was, looking at him eye to eye.

"Spare me!" The words left her lips before she could even realize it.

Maximus walked toward her, using his hands to pat her head.

"Why should I? But since you asked, so be it," and with that, he turned around to leave.

"Don't go!" said Ella as she jumped and hugged one of his long legs.

Maximus opened his eyes in awe.
