Maya's POV
Inspector Seth's smile carried the confidence of someone holding an ace up his sleeve. I'd been puzzled by his earlier comment about Claire's financial situation. After all, I knew she had substantial savings and owned the house my father had left her in their divorce—property worth considerable money.
"Ah, but she doesn't possess any of that anymore, Maya," Inspector Seth revealed, drawing everyone's attention. "Justin visited with a notary. She signed papers authorizing him to sell the house and car to secure the best legal representation for her. However, my investigation uncovered that Justin sold everything and skipped town without paying the attorney a dime."
"That's a lie!" Claire erupted, her face contorting with desperation. "A horrible lie! My son would never betray me like this!"
The detective calmly stood, walked to the door, and beckoned someone inside. He closed the door behind the visitor, who I recognized as an attorney.
