Maya's POV
Maya couldn't breathe.
The pain in her chest was getting worse, like someone was squeezing her heart with a giant hand. She sat on her kitchen floor, holding Emma and trying not to scream.
"Mommy, you're scaring me," Emma whispered.
"I know, baby. I'm sorry." Maya kissed her daughter's head, but the terrible feeling wouldn't go away. Something was happening to Kai. Something that might kill him.
Even though Maya was angry at Kai, even though he'd hurt her so badly, the thought of him dying made her feel sick. They had a link that went deeper than anger or hurt feelings. He was Emma's father. He was her first love. And whether she liked it or not, part of her soul was tied to his forever.
"Maya, you need to calm down," Ethan said gently. "You're having a panic attack."
"No," Maya said strongly. "This isn't fear. This is real. Kai is going, and I can feel it happening."
