Chapter 30 - Chapter 23.5: Animalistic Tendencies

The Room of Requirement was silent with anticipation. The only light came from rune lanterns suspended above us, flickering gently like breath. Outside, the world turned with its usual noise. In here, it held its breath.

It had taken us months. Rituals. Reflection. The pain of failure and the weight of waiting. But we were here now. Twelve students. Twelve souls. Twelve vials of silver fluid resting in bowls etched with our names. One final night.

I stepped forward first. I had to. The others wouldn't follow until I did. That was the cost of leadership. Of trust.

I placed my palm over the center of my chest and whispered the phrase we had all etched into our breath by now.

"Revelare Corpus."

The rune beneath my feet pulsed. Once. Twice.

Then silence.

I closed my eyes.

Pain found me instantly. Not sharp. Not screaming. Just deep. Like something ancient waking in my bones. My skin pulled taut. My vision flickered. The ground fell away.

When I opened my eyes again, the world had changed.

So had I.

I stood in the middle of the circle as a large black panther. Sleek. Silent. Built for observation and quiet power. My paws made no sound against the stone. My muscles coiled like smoke. I blinked once and saw the world in outlines and heat.

I padded backward.

The others stared in silence.

Then Tracey grinned.

"Oh hell yes."

She stepped forward.

"Revelare Corpus."

It was fast for her. No hesitation. No doubt.

In a flash of light and a swirl of magic, she was gone. In her place stood a red fox with gold-tipped ears and bright amber eyes. She spun in a circle once, then darted across the chamber like joy incarnate. The fox turned sharply and bowed toward me, tail flicking with amusement.

Blaise snorted softly. He stood next.

"Let's see how bad this gets."

"Revelare Corpus."

The transformation was slower. Reluctant. Like the magic itself wanted to make sure he really meant it.

Then it happened.

He became a black jaguar, broader than mine, but slower. His eyes were amber and narrowed. He moved with a lazy confidence. When Tracey-the-fox jumped on his back, he didn't react. Just rolled her off with one twist and stretched like he had just woken from a nap.

Millicent was next.

No words. Just breath.

"Revelare Corpus."

Her magic cracked like flint.

She dropped forward, heavy with momentum, and then rose again as a wild boar. Solid. Short-legged. Her hide was iron-gray with streaks of white. Tusks curled from her mouth like declarations. She grunted once and stood still, unmoving, unshakable.

Susan followed with barely a sound. Her voice was steady.

"Revelare Corpus."

Her transformation happened like water freezing midair.

She turned into a lynx. Golden-eyed. Thick-furred. She moved softly across the edge of the circle, keeping her body low, her gaze high. She glanced toward Millicent briefly and they touched foreheads once in acknowledgment.

Neville was sweating. Not from fear. From pressure. From expectation.

He stepped forward, then looked at me.

I nodded.

He placed both hands on the bowl.

"Revelare Corpus."

It took longer than the rest. The magic shook him. But he stayed grounded. Rooted.

When it cleared, he stood tall. Proud.

A badger.

Not squat. Not soft. This one was broad-backed, with eyes that saw straight through weakness. He didn't move much. He didn't have to. You could feel the fight in his stillness.

Hannah went next.

She closed her eyes.

"Revelare Corpus."

A swirl of warmth passed over her skin. Her body shimmered, then folded inward.

A harrier hawk burst from the spell, wings snapping out wide. She soared to the rafters, then circled once. Her call was short. Focused.

Hermione approached like she had rehearsed it. She hadn't. She just knew herself that well.

"Revelare Corpus."

Her form melted into light and reformed into a gray wolf. Tall. Sharp-eyed. Her fur had flecks of pale gold across the shoulders. She did not run. She watched. Waited. Calculated. Then padded across the circle to stand beside Neville. A pack formed in seconds.

Daphne stepped forward without expression. She didn't speak until she was ready.

"Revelare Corpus."

The transformation wasn't elegant. It was precise.

She became a white swan. Tall. Poised. Feathers pristine and sharp as glass. She moved like a queen without a crown. Her wings stretched once, then folded neatly. She said nothing. She didn't need to.

The Carrow twins moved together. They always did.

Flora smiled. Hestia smiled harder.

"Revelare Corpus," they said in unison.

Their magic cracked like breaking mirrors.

They shifted simultaneously into two raven-mockingbirds. Strange hybrids. One pure black. The other white and ash-gray. They circled the ceiling in perfect loops, one shrieking, the other humming.

Then Luna.

She didn't approach the bowl. She just stepped into the center.

"Revelare Corpus."

The air grew cold.

Her body shimmered and vanished.

What replaced her had no footsteps.

A snowy owl, silent as breath, hovered just above the ground. Her wings barely moved. Her eyes were too large. Too bright. She turned her head upside down to study me, then blinked slowly and glided toward the lantern.

We stood there.

Twelve forms.

Twelve truths.

No one spoke. We couldn't. Not yet.

But we didn't need to.

I stepped forward, my black panther paws brushing the edge of the central rune. I looked at them all. My friends. My family. Each of them shaped by months of work and moments of honesty.

I let out one low breath.

Then transformed back.

One by one, they followed.

By the time we were all human again, the chamber felt warmer.

No one cheered. There was no need. This wasn't victory.

It was revelation.

Tracey broke the silence first. She rubbed her jaw and grinned. "Did anyone else get the urge to chase Blaise around the room?"

"Please try," Blaise said, cracking his neck.

Susan folded her arms. "I feel taller somehow."

"You are taller," Hermione muttered, stretching her legs. "Slightly. It's the lingering alignment. Should pass by morning."

Luna was smiling. Not dreamy. Not distracted. Just quiet joy.

"I think I'll keep flying for a while," she said.

No one objected.

Daphne fixed her collar, then looked to me. "What now?"

"Now," I said, "we rest."

Neville nodded slowly.

Hannah smiled.

Millicent cracked her knuckles.

Luna hooted softly, though she was no longer an owl.

The firelight flickered across the floor.

One shape.

Twelve shadows.

A house with teeth.

And now?

We could move through the world unseen.

Not because we were hiding.

Because we were hunting.
