Apollonia’s face stiffened slightly. In truth, not long after the current emperor’s rise to the throne, many people yearned for the former emperor, burdened by the excessive taxation and policies that favored select nobles.
She turned to Dane and his brother Abel, asking with genuine curiosity, “What exactly did you mean when you mentioned losing your land?”
“One day, a noble approached us and demanded that we sell the land that had been in our family for generations. When we refused, he came back later with forged document and ordered us to leave. Abel tried to resist, but he was overpowered, and now his hand…” Dane trailed off, looking down at Abel’s empty sleeve.
“Which noble are you talking about here?”
“I-it was Count Amon.”
Apollonia’s expression darkened.
