----------------------------------------------------------
After dinner, everyone returned to their own rooms. In this ancient world, entertainment was scarce, and most people simply went to bed as soon as darkness fell, resting for the next day's work.
In his room, Shirou Emiya sat by the bed, gazing at the moon. His thoughts wandered. He no longer needed to continue forging his Inherent Spiritual Dress, leaving his evenings unusually idle and unstructured.
As he contemplated the details of this world and what actions he should take next, an unusual sound came from above-on the roof.
"What's that?"
Curious, Shirou Emiya leaned out the window and leaped lightly onto the rooftop.
There, sitting quietly and admiring the moon, was Mash.
"Mash, it's you?"
"Ah!!!"
Shirou Emiya's movements were so light that Mash hadn't noticed him arrive. Her sudden startle made her jump, until she realized it was him and let out a relieved sigh.
"It's Senpai Shirou! Why... why are your movements so silent?"
Seeing her flustered, Shirou Emiya scratched his head and laughed lightly.
"Hahaha, sorry, did I scare you?"
"A martial artist like me, trained to the peak, can fully control the force of my movements to remain unnoticed," he explained. "With my skills, even if I followed right behind you, less than a meter away, you might not notice me at all."
This was why Shirou Emiya's Presence Concealment was so formidable. Though not from an assassin's lineage, he had cultivated this assassination-type skill to perfection. The combination of the A-rank Presence Concealment from the Assassin class, his martial arts mastery, and the enhancement of his Divine Blessing panel made it absolute.
"While it's impressive martial arts, please don't use it in strange ways," Mash said, her voice gentle.
"Haha, I can't help it-I'm used to it," Shirou Emiya replied.
Her complaint dissolved immediately, replaced by a warm smile. She was that kind of pure, kind person. Even when a small irritation arose, it never lingered. Mash Kyrielight's heart was naturally forgiving.
"Now that I think about it, Mash, we've never really had a proper one-on-one chat, have we?" Shirou Emiya said softly, sitting beside her.
"That's true. You're busy every night, and during the day, we're all working to prove our worth. We've never had the chance to just sit and talk like this," Mash replied.
"What about during the day?"
"And when you did have free time, you were usually with Mr. Merlin," she added. "And the conversations you two had... it was hard enough for me just to listen, let alone join in."
Hugging her knees, Mash spoke calmly. At first, her face had flushed from shyness, but as the conversation flowed, she settled.
"...It seems that way," Shirou Emiya said, recalling the past. Slowly, her words helped him remember the details.
At night, there was nothing to mention. During the day, he mostly discussed magic with Merlin. Merlin often initiated, curious about Shirou Emiya's experiences and the landscapes of other worlds. Their discussions always centered on magical questions. Though Merlin occasionally stuttered while chanting too quickly, few in the Nasuverse could rival his knowledge. After all, he had observed the world since the Age of Gods and witnessed the development of magic across millennia. Every conversation with him was invaluable.
Recalling this slightly awkward but meaningful interaction, Shirou Emiya changed the subject.
"Speaking of which, I haven't heard about your journey with Ritsuka yet. How about it? Would you like to tell me?"
"Of course!" Mash's eyes lit up. Excited to share her experiences, she began with a hint of pride.
Before arriving in Uruk, she and Fujimaru Ritsuka had experienced seven Singularities: The Incineration of the Contaminated City, The Hundred Years' War of the Evil Dragons, The Eternal Madness Empire, The Closed-off Four Seas of Ruin, The City of Death's Fog, The North American Mythical War, and The Divine Realm of the Round Table. In each, they forged bonds with numerous Heroic Spirits and repeatedly saved humanity.
"It's a pity your story is destined to remain largely unknown, unpraised," she said softly. "Otherwise, with these achievements, you'd definitely be recognized as famous Heroic Spirits in the future."
Those who became Heroic Spirits were historically significant figures. Yet Ritsuka and Mash's deeds were meant for only a few to witness. Perhaps, in time, they would become Guardians-the silent saviors of humanity.
"It's alright. Our journey wasn't about being praised," Mash said, eyes still fixed on the moon. Her expression radiated tenderness.
"As long as what we do truly helps people, that's enough."
Shirou Emiya fell silent. He knew her circumstances well. As a test-tube baby, infused with the power of a Heroic Spirit, her lifespan was limited-she would only live to eighteen, despite originally being capable of thirty. Time was running short. Yet she faced it without fear or hesitation. Calm, determined, and still deeply curious about the world.
"Mash... she shouldn't have much time left, right?"
Mash froze for a moment, then looked at him in disbelief.
"Huh? How do you know?"
"I'm a top-tier Magus. I can gauge your condition at a glance."
"I see..." Mash nodded, accepting his words calmly.
"That's right."
"Are you scared?"
"Not at all," she said, smiling at the bright moon. "After all, I have everyone by my side."
