"Spirit Pagoda won't help you."
Upon hearing this, Gu Yue was stunned for a moment. "The teacher already knows?"
The middle-aged man shook his head but said nothing.
"Alright." Gu Yue nodded.
No one said anything more. The group simply followed her outside.
"You all look so gloomy. This is the Spirit Pagoda, you know? Countless soul masters buy spirit souls here every day. You think none of them are stronger than you? Just pick someone and challenge them already," said Gu Yue, breaking the heavy mood.
…
Sun Runyu walked out of the Heaven Dou Spirit Pagoda feeling excited and in high spirits.
He had just acquired a spirit soul that was a perfect match for him—it was no wonder he felt great. He was thirty-five this year, already had two spirit souls, but due to his mediocre martial soul and unremarkable spiritual power, those souls only carried him to the fourth ring. After intense effort, he had just broken through to five rings.
He knew he might never reach the seven-ring stage in this lifetime, but he still longed to get a high-quality third spirit soul—at least enough to earn him some status among mid-level soul masters.
He'd saved for a long time to come to the Heaven Dou Spirit Pagoda, and his luck today had been phenomenal. The spirit soul he acquired fused well, and he clearly felt his power surge.
From this moment on, he was officially a five-ring Soul King. On top of that, he finally had a thousand-year soul ring.
As a Soul King, he already held some status among soul masters. And as a mecha pilot, with his new spirit soul supporting his mech, his future prospects had improved significantly. At the very least, he could be promoted to mid-ranked officer, maybe even command a thirty-man mech squad as a lieutenant colonel. With his age, a future as a senior officer wasn't far off—and with that would come a good marriage match.
The more he thought, the more excited he became. Years of hard work had finally paid off. If he kept at it, maybe he'd reach Soul Emperor status, then be promoted to a colonel—solid middle management in the military. Life was finally turning around.
He was just basking in happy thoughts when a shout rang out ahead.
"You wanna fight or not?"
Fight?
Sun Runyu blinked. What fight?
In front of him, several teenagers stood in a line, blocking his path back.
He looked them over—young, clearly in their early teens. Off to the side, a chubby kid squatted, as if waiting to see the show.
"What are you little brats doing? Don't play around the Spirit Pagoda. Go home now." As a soldier, Sun Runyu naturally spoke with a stern tone. His rebuke carried real authority.
"What now?" Ye Xinglan turned to Gu Yue for instruction.
"Do it," Gu Yue said calmly. As she spoke, soul rings began rising beneath her feet.
Having spent so much time together lately, she and Ye Xinglan were perfectly in sync.
As soon as Gu Yue activated her rings, Ye Xinglan charged forward. The Star God Sword appeared in her hand in a flash, and with a flick of the wrist, a blade of starlight shot toward Sun Runyu.
Instinctively, Sun Runyu stepped back. Trained at a military academy, he had ample combat experience. His martial soul activated reflexively, and a layer of mist burst from his body, turning into droplets of water that spread outward like a shimmering curtain.
Ye Xinglan's sword light entered the mist and was refracted, thrown off course.
"One, two, three, four, five—five rings. He's a Soul King," Xu Xiaoyan counted out.
Meanwhile, Gu Yue's barrage of ice spears flew at Sun Runyu like a storm.
He couldn't spare time to scold the kids. Seeing each of them with three soul rings already shocked him.
His second soul ring activated. The mist condensed into droplets and expanded into a wave of water, roaring toward the group.
A five-ring Soul King was still a formidable force. Even if his martial soul and spirit souls weren't elite, his power was real—level fifty-one soul power!
The droplets, infused with soul power, became miniature water bombs. Upon impact, they exploded into a denser water mist, forming a thick screen.
One by one, the ice spears were absorbed into the mist. But to Sun Runyu's shock, the water element began slipping from his control.
Elemental Tide!
Just one clash and they'd already figured out his martial soul. His was a Rain martial soul—a subtype of water—but not pure water. That was why he only had four yellow rings.
As Gu Yue's Elemental Tide activated, all elemental energy in the air flowed to her. Water especially.
A ring of golden light suddenly lit up under Sun Runyu's feet.
A Rain martial soul without water? Weaker than Blue Silver Grass. Just then, a brilliant sword light struck at his chest—and a sharp presence flared from behind.
Golden light chains rose beneath him, binding him fast.
Once Xu Xiaoyan's starlight chains locked him down, it was over.
A sharp dagger appeared at his neck. The Star God Sword pressed against his chest. Gu Yue ceased her attack, but Elemental Tide still pulled in water, and the golden chains slowly faded.
"What are you doing? This is the Spirit Pagoda!" Sun Runyu was truly panicked now. These kids attacked too fast, too strong, and with frightening coordination. Since when were young people this dangerous?
Worse yet, the younger they were, the less afraid they were of consequences. He was honestly worried they'd kill him for fun.
If that happened, the Federation's Juvenile Protection Act would shield them. They'd get off scot-free!
Gu Yue gave a glance to the others, signaling them not to overdo it.
Gu Yue stepped forward. "Uncle, sorry. My friends have a bit of a temper. Here, let this make up for it."
He handed Sun Runyu a piece of hundred-forged metal.
Sun Runyu was baffled. What was going on? But he also relaxed. At least they weren't murderers.
"Hmph!" he snorted, turned, and left. Honestly, he didn't have the face to stay.
Still, he kept the metal. He had good judgment. One look told him this wasn't cheap stuff. Since the boy offered it as apology, why not take it? And this really had shaken him badly—he was still recovering.
"That's not enough. We need more," Ye Xinglan frowned.
"Then we keep going," Gu Yue said, her eyes flashing. "Causing trouble like this, the Pagoda's enforcers should be showing up soon. Standard enforcers won't cut it…"
