Chapter 3: Power & Purpose

Notes:

Another!!

Small note, I do not want to spoil from Fire and Blood (and possibly the next season), so this fic will have several time skips and mostly focusing on the Black's family, their motives, emotion, and their relationships.

Also, I don't plan to make it a long fic as well since House of the Dragon went a little off course from the story to the adaptation and we are to wait another 2 years for season 2 :(

I hope you'll understand.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

After the war council meeting that evening, Rhaenya took a turn from her chambers to Luke's.

Despite all the pressure of the war, the thought of her children always invades her mind. Particularly Luke.

Ever since nearly losing her son, she has been wanting to keep them all close. Wanting to keep them away from all the heartbreaks, pain, and war. When Rhaenys told her that the Greens are coming for her children, she immediately acts. For they are her hope and joy in the midst of pain and hectics.

As the Queen is walking down the hallway, the thought of Luke feared her. Rhaenyra feared that Luke's mood may not be welcoming with his new condition, and she wants to ensure that he is fine and not feel that he is a failure.

When she opened his door, she found quite an unexpected sight. For her son isn't alone, a Maester is with him, inspecting his missing foot and measuring it as Luke sat on a chair.

"I believe that is all, my Prince," the Maester said as he scribbled on a piece of parchment on the floor and handed it over to Luke, "That should be the necessary information for this prosthetic foot."

Her son nodded as he joyfully looked at it, "Thank you."

The Maester nodded and collected his items before walking out the door, the sight of her startled him, "Ah, Your Grace," he bowed.

She nodded back, "Maester," before turning to her son, "Luke?"

Luke looked up from whatever he's reading, "Hello, Mother."

The sight of her son smiling at her makes her heart swell. He is her hope and love, and despite his injuries, she's glad that he could still find joy. She walked up to him and pulled his head to kiss his dark hair, "Are you well, my sweetling?"

He nodded, "I'm fine, you do not have to worry about me, Mother."

She smiled at him, and strokes his hair, "I will always worry about you, my dear," Luke looked at his mother and smiled. Rhaenyra's eyes then turned to the parchment that gave her son so much joy, "What's this?" She could see scribbles of numbers.

"It's the measurement of my missing foot," he said, looking at the parchment again, "I'm going to get a prosthetic foot."

"Why that is quite a smart idea," Rhaenyra strokes his hair gently, "How did you come up with such a thing?"

He shook his head, "It was Aeron's idea."

What? "Aeron?" The thought of the smug bastard made her frown. There is still so much mystery in that man that she has not pried open yet.

He nodded enthusiastically, looking back at the parchment, "He said that I shouldn't waste my talent in swordsmanship, and said that he could build me a prosthetic foot for me."

To say that Rhaenyra is surprised is an understatement. Aeron made it clear that he didn't want anything to do with her family, and yet here he is, giving joy to her son. Why? What are you up to, Aeron?

Not wanting her son to deem her suspicions, she placed her hand on her son's back, "Aeron knows how to make one?"

"Yes," he said, "He said that some of his comrades were just like me, and then he helped the blacksmiths make some for them."

"I see," she hummed, "You know, we can make our blacksmiths make one for you."

Luke shook his head, "It's fine. You need them all to build swords and shields for the next war," his voice became lower, and then he looked up at her, "I want you to win, mother."

Rhaenyra's heart swelled at her son's plea, this made her even more determined to win. For her sake, her father's, and her children's. She pulled his head to her chest, "I do too, sweetling."

He nodded, "I'll have Aeron finish this for me," he brought the parchment up again, and Rhaenyra took it. Just what is Aeron up to?

The Queen Mother thought of something, "Perhaps I can give this to him."

Luke blinked at her, "I can do it myself, Mother."

She only smiled lovingly at him, "You need to rest, my dear one, it's getting late," she kissed his head, "It has been a few days after what happened to you, and I want you to have the necessary strength."

"But Mother…"

Rhaenyra shook her head, "Please, my dear? For me?" she pleaded lovingly at him, "I want you to rest, these past few days have been trying times, especially for you."

"I'm not weak," Luke's voice began to raise, his brows furrowing just like his father.

"I did not say you are weak, merely that you need to gather your strength for the next council meeting," she said, "We do not know when the Greens will begin to attack, and we all must be well-prepared and rested if that time comes."

Now that she said that Luke's expression began to change and soften. He considered her words and finally nodded, "Yes, mother."

Rhaenyra smiled at him with contentment, kissing his cheek, "You are a brave boy, I would never call you weak, my son. For you have the blood of the dragon."

She heard him sigh in contentment and felt his arms around her waist, "Thank you."

She chuckled and took his walking stick and handed it to him, "Now, go to sleep. I'll make sure Aeron gets this."

Luke pulled back from her and nodded, "Thank you, Mother."

Rhaenyra never really appointed where Aeron will stay, so his whereabouts are vague.

She had asked Ser Erryke of his whereabouts but that too wasn't clear, for he stationed him with the other guards, and it wasn't clear where. The guards also share a room.

The only obvious place she could think of his whereabouts is with his dragon, and she left the castle to confirm her theory.

And sure enough, she is right. Except that she is more than just right.

The Red Dragon is laying its head on the ground, eyes closed. Beside the Red Dragon is a small white sleeping tent of a triangular shape, she had never seen it before so it must be his own. But…..why is he in a tent when she has already provided a place for him to stay?

As she got closer to the tent, the Red Dragon's head lifted. It gave out clicking noises like Caraxes before turning to the tent and snorting.

The tent's flap opened and out emerged Aeron, dressed and ready with a fine tunic. But his hair is left in a little mess as if he just got out of bed. For someone who doesn't involve himself in royalty, he seems to know how to make an entrance.

Just like Daemon.

"My Queen," he bowed respectfully at her, "To what I owe you the pleasure of your visit?"

Rhaenyra lifted the piece of parchment in her hand, and gave it to him, "My son told me that you are to build him a prosthetic foot."

Aeron took it and read its content, "Well, the boy was devastated about losing his mobility forever."

"Yet you are willing to help him when you made it clear that you wanted nothing to do with us. Why?" Rhaenyra is confused about his motives. What is it that he wanted?

He looked up a moment to think about it, "Would you believe me if I said I was sentimental?"

"No," she said directly, "If this is your way to win my favor, then you're mistaken."

Aeron shrugged, "I have my reasons." He folded the piece of parchment and slipped it into his pocket, "Now, with your permission, I'd like to borrow some of the tools of your blacksmiths and help build this prosthetic foot for your son."

"What is it that you truly want, Aeron?" Rhaenyra changed the subject, wanting to cut to the chase, "Your words to me contradicts your actions. How do I know that you are not doing this to escape me?"

"Did I not just swear to you before your councils yesterday?"

"There are times that words are just winds," she said, "Decades ago, many of the Houses of Westeros swore to me, and now, some of them swore to the Greens."

Aeron pursed his mouth, still giving an uninterested look, which annoys her, "That's unfortunate."

She nodded, "Precisely, and it is why I really must know what you want, Aeron."

"I've told you, I need to find my mother," he said.

"Is that all?"

"Yes," he said, "If I wanted the throne, I would have killed you right here right now," his hand grazed the pommel of his sword strapped around his waist.

Rhaenyra did not let it sway her, "You would dare kill your Queen?"

He scoffed, "Lucky for you, I do not play your Game of Thrones, nor will I want anything to do with it," he dropped his hand, "My objective is simple, I want Mysaria's location. And you claim to tell me that your husband knows where she is. So it's a simple business offer. We both have the bargain to offer each other. I give you my services, and you give me yours. Simple as that."

"And that service also extends to my son?"

"You want an army, no?" He asked, she nodded, "Dragon or no, your son is to be a knight, am I right? If he is, then he is still a valuable member of the army for this coming war," he walked slowly away from her and faced the castle, "Numbers do not win a battle, but they certainly help. The more people we have, the better chance we have against your enemy, Your Grace."

Rhaenyra is impressed by his perspective of this war, and she is glad she decided to keep him, "You have quite a knowledge about war."

He smirked, "Essos is not an ideal place like Westeros. We too have our own battles."

She chuckled, "Then I am glad that you know what to expect."

"The faster this war ends, the quicker I get what I want," he said.

"I suppose there is nothing I can do to sway your decision to join and serve me when I reign over Westeros?" She followed him.

He turned to her with his kneaded brows, "As I said, I do not want anything to do with your Game of Thrones."

"You could have a title here," she said, "all the glories that you can have of the world. I could even legitimize you as well."

But his expression still did not change, he merely looked at her without any expressions, "I appreciate your offer, but as we agreed, my service for you ends until you get your throne back."

Rhaenyra couldn't deny that she felt a small disappointment of not gaining a strong ally for her reign, not to mention, perhaps a close kin. For he has her blood and is the son of the man she loves.

"Now, my Queen," he said, "With your permission, I would like to start building your son's prosthetic foot. You know how exhausting a child can be when we keep them waiting."

Rhaenyra pursed her lips, and nodded, "Alright, you have my permission."

He bowed, "Your Grace is gracious."

"And with your service still under my contract," she added, if she can't make him stay, then she's going to use every single knowledge he has, "Once my son can walk again, I want you to be his teacher. Their teacher."

Aeron blinked, "I beg your pardon?"

"You heard me," she smiled deviously, "I can tell you have quite a talent and mind in battles. I want my son to be trained by the best."

"I appreciate your compliments, but I believe I did not sign up to be a teacher."

"And in our agreements, I shall have your services. But you did not specify which service it is," she smirked.

"Your war services," Aeron countered, she can hear his little tone of annoyance. Good. She wants to give him a taste should he underestimate her, for it seems that he has for quite a while.

"And I want you to prepare my sons for war," she said, "All my guards are going to war, and dragon riders are to be the last resort. Which means, there is a possibility that he'll also be on the front lines, and I want to make sure that he will come back to me in every battle he participates in."

Aeron gave her a look that she has seen from her husband many times. If things did not go in his way, he would stare at her for a long time and clench his fists. It is the look of defeat.

She knew she won this time. I told you not to challenge me.

Her husband's son sighed, looking away from her and then turning back to her, "Fine," he said, "But I must warn you, I may not be as soft as your other personal trainers for your sons."

She nodded, "Being soft won't win a battle either, do what you must to train them."

Aeron looked at her for a while before nodding, "As you wish, Your Grace," there was a small hint of disdain, but she did not mind.

"There is a fine line between abuse and teaching. So please, know your place."

"Of course, Your Grace," he said, "Now, if you will. With your permission, may we see your smiths?"

"Of course, Aeron," she smiled at him, and with a lighted heart, walked beside him. She thought she heard him grumble but she paid no mind to it as they walked back into the castle.

Because now, Aeron is one step into joining her cause.

"She hustled you good, my boy, " he heard Angelus's little chuckle in his head.

"Shut it, you old hag," he did his best not to grumble, which he managed to maintain.

But the roar of the dragon echoed all over Dragonstone. "What was that, Aeron?"

"Nothing," feeling a little tense on the dragon's wrath.

He heard her growl, "That's what I thought."

Queen Rhaenyra looked back, "Was that your dragon? What's happened to her?"

He shook his head, "It's probably nothing."

Princess Rhaenys never particularly liked any kind of meeting. If anything, they are a constant headache of everything.

While Prince Daemon went to Harrenhel with the troops, and Prince Jacaerys just returned from Winterfell bringing in the good news about the Starks joining their cause, and after the news about Aemond's attack, she and her husband was given command over the navy battles.

But that too turned out to be quite tedious. Perhaps nothing is ever easy in war.

After the meeting, she left the castle and found herself at the beach of Dragonstone, just wanting to remember Driftmark. The sound of the waves, the scent of the seas, the soft golden sand underneath her boots, and the clear blue skies. The laughter of children, and a happy family, just like how it used to be.

Dragonstone is the closest thing to Driftmark.

She went to inspect the children at the beach, expecting to see them training as usual by themselves. Well, perhaps one of them would be watching since he lost a foot.

Except that she was half right.

"Luke, you can walk!!" she heard her grandchild cry out joyfully, "You are back!!"

"I am," the young Prince cried out happily as he walked around normally and came back to Rhaena, "And soon enough, once I get used to it, I can protect us all!!"

"I know you will!" Rhaena said, "You'll be the best Lord of Driftmark."

The Princes and Princesses gathered together joyfully, celebrating Prince Lucerys's recovery. They all ran at full speed until they saw Princess Rhaenys. Her granddaughter was the happiest seeing her, "Grandmother!!"

The Princess smiled and willingly opened her arms to receive them. Rhaena and Baela hugged their grandmother fiercely, she had forgotten how strong they have become, "Careful now, my dears," she chuckled, "I'm not as young as I once was."

Rhaena giggled, "Sorry, Grandmother."

"We're just so happy to see you," Baela giggled.

Oh, how her granddaughters reminded her so much of her own daughter. My dear Laena, you would have been so proud of them.

Their betroths walked sheepishly after, looking at the three of them. All of Rhaenyra's sons bowed, "Princess Rhaenys."

She nodded, "Prince Lucerys, Prince Jace, and Prince Joffrey," her violet eyes turned to Prince Luke and his new foot, "I see that you've recovered fully, Prince Luke."

The boy nodded, "Yes, I can finally join my brothers to battle again, even without a dragon," he looked down sadly, thinking about the loss of his dragon, Arrax.

Rhaena pulled away from her and walked towards Luke, taking his hands to hers, "Dragon or not, it does not determine your strength. It's the will to protect the people you love to the end."

"It's an alright brother," Prince Jace placed a hand on his brother's shoulder, "Maybe one day another dragon egg may come for you."

"And even if there isn't one, you still can be the greatest warrior in Westeros," Prince Joffrey added.

The Prince turned to his brothers and nodded, "Thank you."

Prince Joffrey nodded, "Mother said that the rider with the Red Dragon will train us."

"You're japing," Baela looked at them with such disbelief, "But he's a stranger."

Prince Lucerys shook his head, "Mother said so, she said that while her knights will be occupied for the war, we are still to train. And she said Aeron is a skilled warrior and we are to learn from him."

"I don't know if I'm going to like him," Rhaena said, "He looks…..mean."

"But he saved me, and the one who gave me this," he lifted his prosthetic foot, "Maybe we can trust him."

Rhaenys stayed silent as the children spoke, now that the children mentioned it, this new rider, Aeron, is something that she would like to investigate further. As far as she's concerned, he doesn't look like he is fully committed to Rhaenyra's cause completely.

The same like her.

Rhaenys only joined Rhaenyra's cause for the sake of her cousin, and what the Green had done to her and the council of King's Landing had sparked her anger.

But for Aeron? It can't just be to find his whore of a mother. And once he found her, she is sure he is going to abandon them all.

With that thought in mind, she turned to the children, "Enjoy your time while you still can," she smiled at them and left the beach.

Prince Rhaenys went back into the castle, the morning breeze still strong that it managed to blow into the castle. Her first thought of looking for this rogue soldier is the training grounds of Dragonstone, which is essentially outside the castle again, just a different entrance.

When she found the training grounds, there were hundreds, perhaps thousands of soldiers training. Because it is a wide open space, and outside, it is more difficult to spot anyone or hear them. No echoes could bounce any sound as they are just carried into the wind in different directions.

But luckily, just near her is Ser Erryk, an honorable leader of the Queensguard and the army. He was clashing with one of the soldiers when a blow hit him quite hard to the point he had to turn his back, and that's when he saw the princess. "Princess Rhaenys," he turned back to the soldier to stop, and he complied. The knight pulled his helm off as he walked towards the princess. He bowed, "Princess, how may I be of service?"

"The new rider, Aeron," she said, "Where is he?"

"Here, Princess," the soldier who have been with Ser Erryk came up to her. He then pulled his helm off, revealing his white-silver hair and the same smug face, "How may I help you?"

"You're here, good. This shall hasten my time," she hummed, "Come with me, Aeron. I'd like to speak with you."

Aeron looked at Ser Erryk as if seeking permission, but the knight grunted, "You heard the Princess. Go to her and be done with it, we're still not done with our match yet."

The Rogue soldier smirked and went to place his helm on the table where they placed their swords. He stripped his armor off, leaving him in his tunic and long leather pants, and walked towards her, "Forgive me of my appearance after training."

"No need, come," she turned towards the entrance of the castle and walked

Aeron strides alongside her, "What's going on?"

"Later," she said, intending to have a private conversation. She led him to the council room, which once was crowded, now empty. She led him to the stone table, where the beautiful carvings of the map of Westeros is carved.

"Is there another plan of attack?" he asked as he studies the stone table.

"It comes to my attention that you are now serving under Queen Rhaenyra," she finally said.

"Yes, I said it right in front of everyone here," he said.

"But you did not bend the knee," she pointed out.

He shrugged, "As I said, I am not of these lands. I follow no one, but whoever is giving me rewards I want, just as one pays their servants," he ran his hands on the table, feeling the carvings, "I believe Queen Rhaenyra is aware of this too."

"So, if the Greens are to offer you a bag of dragon coins, would you have accepted it?" Rhaenys crossed her arms and walked slowly around the table, observing his reaction.

"Dear gods, no. One Targaryen to serve is enough," he chuckled, "My work is in Essos, not here. I'm only in Westeros to find my mother and a friend. Nothing more than that." He then looked at her, "Besides, Angelus placed a nasty blow on that Vhagar. I don't believe they will forgive me for that."

"I see," she hummed, "Well then, at the moment, your loyalty lies here?"

"Until I upheld my part of the bargain, and Queen Rhaenyra does hers," he said, "Believe me or not, I am a man of my word, even if I'm a bastard."

"Most bastards want a title and a throne to a House," she pointed out.

"That's the Westeros bastards, not Essos," he countered, "We Essosi enjoy freedom. And, such titles are not looked down upon lest you have a collar around your neck."

Rhaenys hummed, "What is it that you do in Essos, Aeron?"

"You mean my field of work?" she nodded. He puffed, looking up for a while as he walked slowly around the table opposite of Rhaenys, "A bounty hunter."

"Horseshit," she spat, "With a dragon, you must have been assigned to do much more than just bounty hunting."

"Sharp," he chuckled, "Alright, I digress. I was a former soldier….or knight, whatever you call it. So, I did do more , but I stopped. Those days are over, and now I am a bounty hunter."

"And why may I ask did you stop?" she knew it, this man has secrets.

"Let's just say I've had enough of politics," he said.

"Did you?" Rhaenys lifted her brows curiously, still challenging him. Wanting to know if he's lying through his teeth.

"The war for Braavos is over, I did not need to extend my stay," he said.

"Braavos was at war?"

"Most of the population was filled with children of whores, thieves, robbers, you name it. We were looked down upon because of our parents' doings. And then some slave-masters think that our heritage is branded to slavery. So, we fought back."

"Impressive," she said, "You protected the city that is what we call a close kin to Valyria."

"It's where I grew up. I had friends there, but they all died protecting the city, and now, I am what I am," he then looked at her, "That's my other reason why I left the army." She guessed he said this to prevent her to ask him more questions again regarding his departure. Smart.

"My condolence," she said.

"Thank you. Is there anything else, Princess?"

She decided to switch her tactic, "I did not join Rhaenyra's cause just because she's my cousin's daughter. In fact, we had many disagreements."

"Oh? Then what moved your heart to join her, Princess?"

"The Green's cause is threatening my position, my Houses, my grandchildren, and perhaps the whole Kingdom that our ancestors have built," at the mention of "our ancestors" the man stopped walking, "and for the future of my grandchildren."

He pursed his lips, "A worthy cause to fight," he said, "I suppose since the Queen has allies like you, I must be working together with you as the result."

She shook her head, "Ally or not, you are to protect your kin." There she said it. At that mention, Aeron didn't snark back as he used to. Rather startled and stayed silent. She smirked, "Oh, I know the real reason why you ran off from our first meetings. I too am aware of the history your father had with your mother."

This time, Aeron clenched his jaws, cringing at the mention of his parents. "Perhaps if you had kept your mouth shut, it wouldn't come to this. You think just because you are the son of a whore, you'll be let go off easily, but let me tell you," she walked closer, "Many important Lords shared their seeds with whores, and that's where their bloodline is spread. And apparently, you are one of them."

The young man looked at her as if caught in a trap, "What is it that you want from me, Princess" His voice got deeper, it's clear he didn't want anything to do with Prince Daemon. Perhaps another time she'll pry further. For now, she caught him in her den.

She smirked, got you now, "Your loyalty to protect the Targaryens, our family," she said, "You want nothing more to do with us, then the least you could do is protect our family. Isn't it why you who helped the Prince regained his ability to walk?"

"That is different."

"Really? Yet I see the joy in his face when he said that you'll be training them all."

"It was Queen Rhaenyra's command," he said.

"Yes, yes," she said boringly, "But they are good lads, I prefer they are still alive rather than dead, for my grandchildren are going to marry them, and I want a happy future for them all. And the generations to come."

"I see."

She touched his muscular arm and gave it a squeeze, "You may escape all you want, boy. But without your service to the Queen and her House, perhaps this war wouldn't be any different than the one you fought before. And this time, if you abandon this war and gods forbid this happens, their deaths are in your conscience. For you have left your own kin to die in the hands of the Green. An enemy you swore to the Queen to defeat with her."

Aeron did not say anything, merely glaring daggers at her. She knew that he knew. That she is right.

The Princess then withdrew her hand, "I suppose you must continue with your match with the other guards. After all, you are to teach my sons-in-law how to fight properly. They are rather rigid if you ask me."

And at that, she left the council room, leaving the bastard son of Daemon alone with his thoughts. As she walked away from him, she did not hear any sound of movements or voice from behind her.

Obtaining Harrenhel's loyalty wasn't hard. Just a glimpse of Caraxes was enough to terrorize the Lords to bend the knee to Rhaenyra.

Now, they are gaining more allies. They can take back King's Landing.

As he is inspecting the soldiers at the grounds, seeing their condition and tallying their forces, he spotted a familiar figure standing at the castle alley. She is with a long hood, covering herself entirely.

But Daemon knows too well of her body, for he had slept with her a long time ago.

He quickly strides towards her and grabbed her hand, leading her deeper into the ruins of the castle and away from the eyes and ears. Luckily, it's the morning. Thus, the morning fog still surrounds this ruined castle.

"What do you think you are doing here??" Daemon asked in a whisper, but with a demanding tone of anger in them.

She lifted her head up to meet his face, "It's good to see you too, Daemon."

His grip on her wrist tightened, perhaps giving her a red mark, "Cut the formalities, what the fuck are you doing in Harrenhal?"

"A little bird told me that our son is looking for me," she simply said with a hush.

Daemon cringed at the mention, "You knew?" How did the news travel so fast to her? Does the whole Westeros know about Aeron?

She smirked, "I am no longer a whore, you know. I have connections."

Daemon couldn't take her smug face anymore and slammed her to the wall behind her, she gasped at the sudden violence but didn't seem surprised by it. "I am losing my patience," he pressed his hand around her neck, "Does the whole Westeros know about Aeron?"

She shook her head, "They know the existence of a rider of a Red Dragon, but not about our seed," she smiled, "At least, not yet."

He slammed her again, "You didn't tell me you were pregnant that day."

"I didn't know either until I had the sickness on my way back to Essos," she said, "And when I wanted to come to tell you, you were already married. What did you think I was supposed to do?" What she said is true, for they also left on bad terms. He cringed at the memory of calling her a common whore.

He shook the shameful memories of his mind and focused on the lady in front of him, "Our son wanted nothing to do with us," he growled, the pressure began to grow on his hand to her neck, "What did you do to Aeron?"

Mysaria grabbed his wrist, attempting to pull it away, but Daemon kept a firm grip on her. He gave away slightly in his mercy, "I raised them for a year," she choked a little, "But things were growing harder in Westeros and Essos, so I left them at the House of Black and White. They were raised by the priests there."

Them? "Hang on, who is 'them'?" the grip in his hand began to loosen a little, feeling shaky and weak all of a sudden.

Mysaria gasped silently, glaring daggers at him. Her hand went to her throat, easing the pain from his grip, "Oh, he did not tell you?"

"What?" The Rogue Prince's heart began to beat a million times faster. He had a guess when she said 'them' but he is unwilling to believe it. "What did he not tell me??"

His former lover straightened her back, glaring daggers at him, "That day, I did not only give birth to a child," she said, "I gave birth to twins. Aeron has a twin sister, Aeryll."

Notes:

Our two Rhaes got our Aeron, making him reconsider his initial plans. Those two are devious in their own ways, especially Rhaenys. She's awesome when it comes to words! Especially her talk with Alicent back then :) I wanted to make more of that.

Rhaenyra is also an awesome Mum, so I want to make her handle Aeron as he were her own son :)

And the cat's out of the bag 0_0

Hope you enjoyed it!! Next chapter will be a father and son moment.

Let me know what you think!! It always motivates me to write :)

Claire.
