Chapter 2: The Dragon and Her Boy

Notes:

Here comes another!!

I'm so happy with everyone's enthusiasm! Please let me know what you think! It motivates me to write some more

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

The One-eyed prince was baffled as he sat in his chair in front of the hearth.

Here he was relieved and furious all at the same time. He almost killed the son of Rhaenyra Targaryen, but he did kill his dragon. But all in all, it's enough evidence to awaken her anger.

And then…there's that rider. Did Rhaenyra earn a new ally? If that's the case, they must act quickly. Another dragon ally is another strength for her.

"What do you think you are doing?" he didn't even realize his mother came in.

Aemond scoffed, "I do not know what you are talking about."

"A little birdie told me that your dragon killed Prince Lucerys's dragon," she answered for him.

"Vhagar did, not me," he countered.

He heard his mother's footsteps coming towards him, and then she was right in front of him. Without anticipating it, his mother grip his face, startling the prince, "I am doing my duty to prevent war from happening," she gritted her teeth, "And your stupidity is causing us to the brink of war."

"An eye for an eye, mother," the Prince said calmly, "I was merely showing our power."

His Queen mother glared daggers at him for a while, the prince felt no sense of intimidation at all. Then, she released her grip and stormed out of the room.

"Best you stay out of this before you are going to regret your next decisions," and at that, she left the room.

The One-Eyed Prince said nothing, for she speaks the truth. And the feeling of relief and confusion came back to him, and he was left to ponder on his own thoughts.

He must plan the next move now that Rhaenyra has another Dragon ally.

Rhaenyra knew her husband took in a lover when he was married before.

But to father a bastard is something she has not considered in a long time. And now, his past seems to haunt him back. She has no say in her uncle's behavior, for her own children too were born out of wedlock.

Come to think of it, she can see why he has the guts to speak however he wants at them both. For he has Daemon's temper too, even his silver hair, though there are some taints of white.

She caresses Daemon's arm, wanting him to know that she is there to support him, "I don't suppose you knew that this would happen."

He shook his head, "Mysaria never told me," he said in defeat before sighing, "I would've taken him in had I known."

Rhaenyra pressed her lips on his arm, "I know you will," she murmured, for her husband's love for something he cares for is fierce. Fierce as a dragon, and that is what she loves about him, "I don't suppose I should ask you how you knew that Aeron is your son?"

He snorted, "A dragon rider, silver hair, a mother by the name of Mysari whom I laid with 19 years ago, and suddenly a young man by the age of 18 appeared."

She giggled at his remark, "Point taken," the Queen rests her head on his shoulder, "What do you want me to do with him?"

He turned to her, "You can do as you like, Your Grace."

"Don't jape about this, Daemon," she turned her head to meet his eyes, "He has your blood. Our blood. The least I can do is hear your thoughts on this, how you feel about him."

Daemon turned back to the fire dancing in the hearth, staring blankly at the flames, "I do not know," he murmured, it's rare to see her husband feeling confused, and when he does, it's a serious matter, "But I do not want to banish him. Or kill him."

"I do not want to send him away either," she agreed, this made Daemon turn to her. Rhaenyra straightened her back, "He saved Luke, a stranger whom he did not know. He also has a dragon. Luke lost his dragon, which means that we are significantly weaker. We need all the help we can get."

With Aeron being Daemon's son, perhaps he might consider joining her cause to take back her throne. But how?

"My love," she began, wanting to ease her husband's burden and anxiety, "I will try to convince him to join us."

"He just told you that he wanted nothing to do with us," he said.

She shook her head, "Not unless I have anything to say about it," She smirked when he looked at her with confusion, "I am the Queen, whoever stands in my domain is under my command too."

Daemon's face turned into something of pride and awe. Her husband has watched her grow up from the young girl she was to an adult, and now he is her biggest support. Her advisor, her teacher, her uncle, and her love. She trusts him, and he trusts her.

Her husband turned his body to her, and wrapped his strong arms around her, "You have grown up, sweet Rhaenyra," he kissed her forehead, "I love you very much."

She replied with a kiss on his cheek, "It's all thanks to you, my love," she murmured, "You have always been there for me. Let me be there for you."

Being captured and thrown into prison isn't something Aeron is unfamiliar with.

Perhaps, in this entire castle, he is the one most familiar of them all. To be trapped in the darkness, imprisoned, tortured, questioned, and stuck in there like a caged animal. You name it.

But Aeron did not feel fear or calm about all this. He felt confused as he sat on the floor and stared at the walls, recounting everything that had just recently happened.

Of all people he would encounter, it just had to be his real father.

"Your thoughts are louder than usual, my boy," he heard Angelus in his mind.

The sound of his dragon made him awake. He stood up, looking out the window where it's his only view of the outside world, " Angelus! Are you alright?" He could not clearly see the picture, for it was mostly the skies that is turning orange. Other than that, he could see nothing else. Angelus must be out there somewhere, not too far but not too near either. For he cannot hear her roars or growls.

"Nothing I can't handle, although these flees are infuriatingly persistent," he heard her growl annoyingly, "Whatever did you do, boy?"

"I…well, ran off in a light too fast ," Aeron ran his hand through his hair and shook his head, "Did they do something to you?"

"Not particularly," she said, "At the moment, I am outnumbered. The dragons here are keeping watchful eyes on me, I cannot make a move to reach you."

"We are outnumbered, to begin with, anyway," he pointed out, "I led us to this, I am sorry."

"Don't be, my child," the Red Dragon said, "You are not a heartless person, you did what you believe is right. And for that, I am proud of you."

"And in doing so, I just discovered that the Prince of this damn castle is my father," he snorted and sat back on the grubby floor.

"I knew I sensed something familiar from that family, even from the boy you rescued," she said with an unsurprising tone, " Well, you may not like your father now, but perhaps he could help you find your Mother," The Red Dragon tried to make him see reason, "You are willing to find and meet the mother you never knew, how is this different from your Father?"

"Because I am not looking for him, and I don't want to," he said firmly, "In addition, he's also married to the heir of the Iron Throne. Perhaps he might think that I'm a threat," he gritted his teeth, "I'm certain he is discussing with her about me now. They would probably want our loyalty since one of their dragons died."

"And the rider with Vhagar on her back has seen me, which means that both sides know of our existence. Although they might not know yours since you were wearing a hood," Angelus hummed, "If I may speak freely, my boy."

"When do you ever not?"

His Red Dragon ignored his sarcasm, "You may need your father more than ever now. Who knows, perhaps he knows where your mother dwells. And If my guess is correct, the moment we leave without siding with Rhaenyra Targaryen, the Dragon pawns of King's Landing may be after us," She stated in an authoritative tone, "Now, I ask you, Aeron," her tone began to soften, "Who would you side with?"

"None," Aeron disagreed with any of the choices, denying a reality that he knows he must face eventually, "I do not want any part of these Targaryen thrones. It's a meaningless battle of a damn throne and who must lead."

"There's no such thing as a meaningful battle, but the reality is that if we don't fight, we die," Angelus countered, "Back to my point, boy. Seeing that you are the son of the Prince here, they may spare you. However, if they release you, their enemy would be after us. And this time, there is no telling that they'd release us easily, especially since we attacked them. You've no other choice but to choose a side."

Aeron remained silent at her remarks, for what she speaks is true. If he hadn't saved this Lucerys boy, perhaps he'd be free now, this was Angelus's first option.

No, I'm not like this, he shook his head. I won't have that guilt in my conscience. He liberated areas that are slave master-infested, finding and freeing abandoned children forced to labor in Braavos. To turn what he had fought so hard and long is absurd.

But now….

The sound of the key rattling and his door unlocked broke his train of thought, but not enough to shock him.

The prison door then opened, revealing to be a guard with a helm. Seriously, can anyone see wearing those?

"The Queen and her councils demand your presence," he said sternly, in his hands are wrist cuffs.

"They want to see me, Angelus," he informed his dragon as he stands up, and reluctantly offered his hands to the guards. The guards moved towards him and chained his hands, "I don't think I'll be able to hear you after this. So, wish me luck," He is then shoved out of the room and led away.

"I suspect so," she said, "Be careful, Aeron." And then, he could not hear her again.

Aeron walked calmly, following wherever they are taking him. But most likely, it'd be the same place where he ran off from.

And he's right.

As he arrived at what it seems to be the council room, everyone is there. Even the boy who lost his foot is there, using a walking stick to help him stand up. He is surrounded by two other boys with black hair and two ladies with silver hair and black skin, he assumed that they are all to be married. My, what a family.

"Please, release his cuffs," Queen Rhaenyra commanded, "He is not a prisoner."

Aeron blinked at her command, and her guards obliged. Normally, most people who captured him (for most probably the ridiculous reasons to him) would still have him cuffed. Why did she do it?

The young man shook his hands and let the blood in them run back, "Your Grace is gracious," he said, the least he could do now is win her favor in her domain.

Queen Rhaenyra didn't seem to accept it much, "Do you know why you're here?"

Aeron clasped his hands together in front of him and straightened his back, "I suppose I created an unwanted commotion in this castle."

"That is one," she said, "The other is that I want to know where your loyalty lies," she went straight for the throat, "As my husband said, these are trying times. My claim to the throne is threatened, and I must take back my birthright."

"I see," Aeron simply said.

Queen Rhaenyra lifted her chin up a little higher and walked slowly toward him before coming to a stop, "I see that you have little interest to join my cause."

Aeron looked down and pursed her lips, "Westeros is not my home," he said, "As a stranger to you all and of this nation, I have no right or interest to join your cause. I am but a spectator."

"But the fact that you have a dragon says otherwise," she countered, "In this nation, only the Targaryens and Velaryions can ride dragons. No one else can, lest they have the blood of the dragon," her violet eyes then bore down to his black eyes, "And clearly, you have."

Aeron shifted uncomfortably, the Queen should know by now about who his father is, judging by how Prince Daemon is observing him like a wolf. But it doesn't look like the rest of the council has the slightest idea of it, and even if they know about it, their faces did not show it.

"Young man," an old man standing across the Princes chimed, "What is your motive seeking for this Mysaria?"

Nosy bastard, Aeron cursed in his head. Here he thought he could be released because he was looking for a whore of a mother, and it caused him to be imprisoned instead. He must be careful of his next words, or they will never be able to leave Dragonstone.

He took a deep breath and opened his mouth, "I am looking for someone," he finally said, "And I need my mother for it."

"You claimed that she is your mother and yet you barely made contact with her?" The Queen asked, "How do you even know she may be your mother?"

"My mother did not intend to raise a child," he said, "She left me to grow up in a temple at Braavos of Essos. There was a time she visited when I was a small boy, but she did not acknowledge me as her son. And that was the last time I ever saw her."

The council watched him as he spoke his tale, none seem to question it. Good. He looked at Daemon Targaryen, trying to see his reaction to this, but found that he remain expressionless.

As for the Queen, she furrowed her brows, "And what business do you have with your mother?"

"She has connections I need," Aeron said, "I am looking for someone. A member of the temple, a friend of mine," part of it is true, "We were separated during a disaster that broke in Essos, I want to bring that person back, and Mysaria may have the connection I need."

"I see," the old man hummed, "But did you not think that bringing your dragon here will go unnoticed?"

"I did," he said, "But due to the coming war from whatever you all had, it had delayed many ships from coming to Essos. So I had no choice, my plan was to let my dragon blend in with the rest or keep her hidden in a moat. But….well," he sighed, "As you can see, that did not work. And I ended up saving your son."

She nodded, thankfully she didn't really regard much of his small jape, "And for that, we are all grateful for your aid. But that is also another reason why I request for you."

"Alright, let's hear it," he said. He's in the Dragon's Den, it best to comply with their wishes or he's as good as dead.

"As you may have known, we lost a dragon. Because of that, we are significantly weaker," she informed him, "I need allies, as much as possible."

"And you want me to join your cause," Aeron continued for her. You're damn right, Angelus.

"Correct," she said, "I know you and your dragon have potential. We need fighters like yourself, and we'd be glad for you to help us in this war, stranger of these lands or not," the young man was about to ask what was in it for him before the Queen continued again, "And if you do so, we'll help you find this Mysaria."

He scoffed, "Can you?"

"You have no idea the connections I have,' she smirked, making him somewhat startled at her confidence, "So, what do you say, Aeron of Braavos?"

The young man bit his inner cheek, "Only for this war? And then you'll leave me be?"

She nodded, "Just this war, after all, you are of Essos."

For this, he doesn't need Angelus's consult. He nodded, "Alright, just this war," Aeron looked around, "So, is there any contract or something that I must sign? Or where and what my position is?"

"You're a fast-decision maker, I like that," she chuckled before addressing her council, "Leave us all, and Ser Erryk," she turned to her knight, "You have a new guard in your army. Make sure you speak with my advisors too on our new potential ally and what his role shall be in the future."

The knight nodded and everyone began to disperse. Aeron is the most enthusiastic to leave, for he does not want to be in a room with the watchful eyes of Daemon Targaryen. He turned back to join the crowd.

"Aeron," the Queen called him, ah shit, "Please stay."

The white silver-haired man gritted his teeth in annoyance, he turned back again to see the Queen and Prince Daemon Targaryen watching him like a hawk from the hearth. Aeron had no other choice but to comply again, he walked towards them and stopped several feet from them.

When the room is empty save for the three of them, the Queen spoke, "I think you also know why we want to speak with you alone."

Aeron pursed his lips, "I have a guess."

She nodded, her arm snaked to Daemon's arm, holding his hand possessively, "Prince Daemon here, is my husband," she began, "He has some connections to reaching your mother for he once had....an association with her." He looked away at that mention, "Without wasting any more time, perhaps you both can discuss together and find a way to sneak into King's Landing and find her."

The bastard of Daemon hid his relief and simply nodded, "Your Graces are gracious," he added.

"And once you found this person, what is it you intend to do?" this time, Daemon asked, "Are you going to run away?"

"Tempting," he said.

"In that case, I'll join your little quest," Prince Daemon said with a slight fury in him, irritating Aeron, "I shall see what you are truly up to, make sure you don't run away."

"That is not your concern," the young man countered.

"No, but the activities of all our armies are our concern," he took a step forward, looking at him eye to eye, "As I said, these are trying times. We must be more careful."

Aeron's heart sank when he said this. Here, he didn't want anyone to know whom he is looking for, and yet his father is a nosy dog. Then again, perhaps he also has the right to know. Once he meets with her, not only will Daemon will know, but the entire castle too. Especially now he has sworn to help Rhaenyra's cause.

Perhaps he could just decline this immediately. Angelus is right, he doesn't know where to start. May as well ally with the one with more connection as a start.

He sighed, "Fine," he reluctantly said, "What would you have me do?"

She nodded, "Leave us first, Aeron. I'll discuss what's our next move with my husband. For everything."

Aeron nodded and bowed, "Your Graces," and at that, he turned and walked away from them.

"Do not think of even leaving Dragonstone, Aeron. The dragons and guards have their eyes on you and your dragon," she warned him with an authoritative tone, making him stop and turn his head a little, "Do not challenge me on this. Or any of us."

Aeron let out a silent snort, "We wouldn't dream of challenging you, Your Grace." He thanked the Gods silently that they did not discuss his parentage, and strides away to leave the halls. Angelus is going to want to know about this.

Once the young man left, Queen Rhaenyra and Prince Daemon discussed further.

"You gave him what he wants," Daemon noted, "And in doing so, the potential of him escaping us is higher."

She nodded, "It's a bargain of ours," she walked towards the heart and stare at the dancing fire, "From my judgment, he is not going to work properly lest we give him what he wants first."

Daemon looked up for a while to give it a thought, "That's a possibility, but finding Mysaria will be easy for my part," he said, "Once he gets what he wants, he'll escape."

"Not unless we can hold him off," she countered, turning to him, "From what I observe, this person that Aeron is looking for must be a very important person."

Her husband quirked his brow up, "You want me to hold whatever this person is a prisoner?"

"Not particularly," she chuckled darkly, "I would prefer if you find out who this person is before he does. And when you do, perhaps you can get to this person first and gain their trust. That way, we can keep him."

"Ahh, an eye for an eye," he smirked, "You are a devious woman."

Queen Rhaenyra scoffed, "I am only one if my potential ally has the potential to deceive me," she then wrapped her arms around his chest, "And seeing that he is your son, you tend to be quite a devious man too sometimes."

Daemon returned her hug and kissed her lips, "I only do so to protect my family."

She hummed, "I believe Aeron would do too. After all, he is also of your blood. Our blood, he is still family," she can see Daemon become uneasy as she mentioned this, her hand touching his cheek, "What's wrong, my love?"

He sighed, taking her hand before kissing her palm, "I would've brought him in had I known of his existence," he finally said in a whisper of regret, "I would've raised him with my own daughters, and now he has little to no interest to help us because of me."

Rhaenyra pressed her ears to his chest, "But you did not know," she tries to comfort him as much as she could, "Do not be too harsh on yourself, I'm certain if you speak with him, he would understand."

He looked down to meet her, "What makes you think he will?"

"He saved Luke from Vhagar and Aemond, someone he never knew," the Queen pointed out, "He has a fighting spirit and the willingness to protect others, just like his father."

Daemon looked down for a while, "Would you say it is out of pity?"

She shook her head, her husband can sometimes be so self-deprecating, "Go talk to him, Daemon. Clear things up with him. That way, perhaps he would even consider staying longer."

"So, you have picked a side," Angelus hummed as the young man leaned his body on her huge talons and crossed his arms. His short silver-white hair danced with the wind.

He scoffed, "Not like I have a choice."

"Perhaps so, but being alive is better than being dead."

Aeron did not reply and looked at the horizon where the sun has set, and it's getting dark. This is the first time he's been to Dragonstone, and not just looking at it as a view. But to think that he must fight for Queen Rhaenyra, and participate in a war he didn't want to be in is another matter entirely. Not to mention, now that his father knew about his existence, things are becoming even more complicated.

"There's no use in pondering about what had happened, my boy," Angelus puffed smoke from her nostril, "You are just going to have to face that you have to serve Queen Rhaenyra What's the worst that could happen?"

What is, indeed? It's true that nothing is going to happen between Daemon and him, perhaps? After all, he is a bastard. What does he want with him anyway?

But deep down inside him, he hated both his parents for not being there for them.

Their childhood was terrible, far more than he had ever experienced. The harsh training, the pressure to take another person's life, the kidnap that led to murder, and the disaster that brought him to the road of loneliness. If it weren't for the Red Priestess and Angelus, he wouldn't even be alive.

The feeling of stress and pain only drove him to become a true assassin and fighter. And to say that he had spilled blood on his hands is an understatement.

"What's done is done, my boy. You must face your reality now, fight with your father. By then, you'll be able to find your mother. After all, they know her whereabouts, and we don't. Seeing that she has many connections, there is a chance that she is also well-hidden. So, your father and the Queen are your best bet."

"And once I found what I'm looking for, I'll leave this place," Aeron firmly said.

"Abadon the war?" she turned her head to him before looking the other way to see if the other dragons are still watching. And they sure are from a distance, hanging around the boulders and hills, but still being alert. Angelus growled in annoyance.

"I can fake my own death," he said, "The people here have little respect for me, probably because I'm a foreigner. They won't even think twice if I'm gone, I think I can say the same for Daemon and Rhaenyra. Besides, they don't seem to trust me."

"Just like how, at first, you weren't able to bind the trust of the people of Braavos to protect them from slave masters before you proved your worth to them," Angelus pointed out.

"That's because they saw me on you," he said, "No one dared to fight me when you are by my side."

"That may be true, but," Angelus leaned her head closer to her rider, "They were all willing to join your cause. They would have just let us win the war, but instead, they hopped on their horses and fought the slave masters. Tell me, my boy. What kind of people would do such a thing if it weren't for their leaders?"

Aeron remained silent on her remark, choosing to ponder on it without giving out an opinion.

He heard her chuckle, "Perhaps you underestimate yourself, my boy. I've told you before, regret is for fools."

He sighed, Angelus can read him like a mother would for a child. Angelus is way older than him, it's no wonder she's been able to give him her own wisdom. Even if she's a dragon. It's why he likes to hear her thoughts.

"Speaking of trust, I believe you can start proving it right now."

Aeron furrowed his brows, expecting another wise-ass word, "What do you mean?"

"We have company," her talons moved, making him stand up straight, "Look lively, boy."

The young man turned around to his Prince Lucerys approaching him with his walking stick, clearly still struggling with his new condition.

As the Prince came up to him, Aeron bowed, "Prince Lucerys."

"Aeron of Braavos," he said, he looked at Angelus for a while to see for any sign of threat and found non, then he turned back to him, "I never really properly thanked you for saving me."

Aeron waved his hand, "It's no problem."

"Either way, there must be something I can repay you," the Young Prince said, "If it's money…"

"No need," he said, "I don't need anything. Do not trouble yourself."

"If that's what you wish," he murmured.

"It is," he quickly said before he remained silent, staring back at the horizon.

"Why did you save me though?" Prince Lucerys asked, "You said you wanted nothing to do with our war, yet you saved me."

Aeron turned to the Prince, he looked up for a while to think about what he just said, "Call it sentimental," he said, "Although I did not know that the war have already begun when you were chased by Vhagar, and then when you mentioned Queen Rhaenyra, that's when I was contemplating on my decision," he said truthfully.

"You considered drowning me?" he asked with an unsettling tone.

"I'll be honest, it was in my mind," he said, "But the rider of Vhagar and you have seen us. There's no use turning back after saving you and attacking them, if I drop you then, both sides will come after me. So, I had to make a choice."

"I see," the young Prince simply said, there was a hint of sadness in the tone.

Aeron did not wish to let him feel ill, otherwise, he'd tell his suspicions to his mother and they will keep even more watchful eyes on him and Angelus. He decided to say something else, "So," he cleared his throat, "How's your leg doing, my Prince?"

"Well, as you can see," he looked down at his missing foot, "I don't think I'll be able to walk or fight properly again just like before, I'll have to support my mother from behind," he said sadly."

"Nonsense," Aeron replied, making the Prince startle, "If you have talent in swordsmanship, why waste that skill."

"What are you getting at?"

Aeron looked at his foot before turning back to the Prince, "May I?" Prince Lucerys nodded, and the white silver-haired boy kneeled to inspect his missing foot. The foot is now a stump, but it didn't look too bad, "I think we can fix this."

"Are you saying you can bring back my foot?" the Prince asked sarcastically.

"If I had magic in me, I would," he countered, "However, you can use prosthetic ones."

"You mean…like a fake foot?"

"Yes," Aeron said.

"I'm not certain if the people here know how to make one…."

"I'm certain you have the smiths here to help you."

He shook his head, "Most are occupied helping create more swords for the coming war."

"Oh," Aeron stood up, he thought of something for a while before finally opening his mouth, "If you'll allow me, I can make one for you."

Prince Lucerys looked at him strangely, "You know how to make one?"

He nodded, "There was a time my comrade also lost his foot, and I helped the blacksmiths to make one."

"Oh," the young Prince looked hopeful at this knowledge, "If you can make one for me, then I'd appreciate it very much."

"Alright," the least of clearing his suspicions from these Targeryens is by helping their precious prince, "Starting tomorrow wouldn't make sense since you'll all be busy, so I suppose I can take some measurements from you first. Then I can start making one for you," he looked at him, "That is….with your permission of course."

He nodded, "I accept," the young Prince said enthusiastically, "I suppose I can ask the Maesters here for my foot measurements."

Aeron spreads his arms, giving him the language that he follows his lead, "That would be better, then I can start right away with the measurement notes you have."

He nodded, "I owe you again, Aeron."

The young man waved his hand, "It's no problem, just give me a measurement of your missing foot from your stump to the ground, and around your stump. That way, I can create a fitting prosthetic foot for you."

"I will," Prince Lucerys said with so much joy, "Thank you, Aeron."

He bowed, "You're welcome."

The Prince then turned back to where he came from, walking more joyfully now despite his missing foot.

"You seem to win his favor," Angelus said, she has been silent the whole time, watching their interactions, " I hope you have not grown soft."

He shrugged, "I did it to win his favor, nothing else," he returned to her side and gazed at the horizon as the sky is getting dark, "As you said, right now, we need to focus on staying alive. I won't be good dead if I am to meet my mother."

The dragon snorted and looked at the horizon too, "That's a far better plan."

Notes:

I don't plan to make too much on this story….I think. There will be a lot of plot changes from the actual storyline of "Fire and Blood" now that a dragon seed like Aeron is in the picture. Hope you'll be looking forward to the next one just as I am!

I am also open to co-creators. If you are interested to join me, comment here :D

Also, let me know what you think!! Comments motivates me :)

Until then!! Take care!
