The night's firelight danced over Elsa's rare smile as children. More than a decade ago, the castle's grand hall hummed with music and warmth—a stark contrast to tonight's flickering candlelight.

Five-year-old Elsa, crowned with messy blonde hair, and four-year-old Anna, with her tangle of auburn curls, sat cross-legged on the thick carpet. Their father, King Agnarr, settled into an armchair, cloak draped around him, his face glowing gentler than torchlight.

Ethan sat across from the two sisters, leaning forward. He could almost hear the crackle of memories, as if the castle itself had rewritten its own past for him to read.

"A long time ago," King Agnarr began, his voice rich and steady, "the voice of an ancient forest lived just beyond Arendelle. It lived in wood and stone, but never in crown or court."

Elsa and Anna gazed, eyes wide and adoring.

"When our family came to rule," he continued, "we made a promise to listen. Not to conquer… but to protect."

Little Elsa reached out and touched the flame of a nearby torch, wrinkling her nose as it hissed. Anna giggled and mimicked her.

"Why can't the forest speak now, Papa?" Anna asked.

Agnarr's expression softened. He looked at Elsa, too. "Maybe… it's waiting for the right time to be heard."

He leaned forward conspiratorially. "That forest… calls to us. It's alive—not just with trees, but with history. Ancient magic. Spirits. Some come in the form of wind, water, stone, or fire. Others… we can't name at all."

Elsa's eyes grew distant for a moment, but she couldn't yet put words to what stirred in her.

That memory folded into the next: Elsa and Anna racing through the garden after that night. Elsa spotted a swirl of leaves chasing her—tiny embers of blue magic dancing into the sky.

Anna stumbled in the grass, laughing. "Elsa, look!"

Elsa froze, her small hands rising. A white swirl of frost arced off her sleeve, icing the hedge.

Anna's eyes grew wide as Elsa backed away, startled by the power she had never been told she had.

Agnarr rushed out. "Elsa?"

That night, at the hearth, the king knelt between them.

"Honey," he said to Elsa, brushing a loose curl behind her ear. "You're part of the old magic now. It's tied to this land… and to that forest."

Elsa listened, frightened and fascinated.

Anna's voice trembled. "But why didn't you tell me?"

Agnarr smiled sleepily. "Because Elsa needed time. And Anna… you'll learn when you're ready."

He looked at Elsa again. "One day, the forest voice will call for Elsa. We have to be ready to listen—and to follow."

Anna reached for Elsa's hand. They sat in silence.

The River Scene

Flash forward days later: the sisters by the river. Elsa had followed the blue swirl of magic—and Anna followed her. Their footsteps splashed through the stream.

Agnarr's voice echoed again: "That voice you heard as children…"

Elsa closed her eyes. "It sounds so far away now."

Anna squeezed her sister's hand. "But it found you."

Elsa nodded, looking up at the treetops dancing in the wind.

The castle's candlelight shifted, and Elsa—now grown—exhaled slowly. She stood from her chair in the shadowed room, her gaze distant. That forest still calls.

And Anna… Anna followed me once before. The memory of Anna's voice, whispering "Elsa…" in the garden, echoed through her mind. This time, the call sounded bigger. Stronger.

Back to the Firelit Hall

In the present, Elsa snapped her eyes open and slipped away from the hall. She found Anna in the corridor, gazing at old portraits of their parents.

Anna jumped at first, then smiled softly. "Thinking about Papa's story?"

Elsa nodded.

Anna sighed. "I wish we'd listened sooner."

Elsa shook her head gently. "It was always meant to be you and me. We'll answer the call… together."

Anna's grip tightened. "We keep each other safe."

They hugged—sisters tethered by magic, memory, and love.

Ethan, watching from the doorway, entered silently.

Anna stepped away. "Hey."

He hesitated. "Sorry. Thought maybe—"

Anna gestured toward Elsa. "Just… give us a second."

Ethan watched Elsa turn away, alone. He approached gently and rested a hand on her shoulder.

"She's strong," he said softly.

Elsa leaned into the warmth of his hand. "So are you."

The three of them returned to the hearth. Anna poured tea, and they settled around the fire.

Anna began, her fingers wrapped around a delicate cup. "Papa said the forest spirits would one day send someone to lead Elsa…"

Elsa gasped gently, meeting Anna's eyes.

Ethan set a hand on both sisters'—bridging past and present. "Then it found you."

Anna smiled gently. "And us."

They drank in silence. Outside, snowflakes drifted against dark windows. Inside, ancient magic stirred at last.

Elsa rose at last and stood in the silent grandeur of her childhood memories. She whispered to the heavens, "I hear you."

Ethan and Anna watched, knowing they stood on the brink of a journey that would rebuild their bonds—and test their love—for the voice had finally awakened.
