Chapter 11 - The Stairway Gauntlet

The central stairwell of the administrative building shuddered with the ferocious growls of thirty-five snarling dimensional predators.

"Thirty-five hostiles massed across the first three landings," the First Player whispered, tracking the dense clusters on his tactical radar.

"Kendra, take the central choke point on the landing!"

"Ironhide... activate!" the defensive fighter shouted, slamming her granite forearms together with a resounding clang.

"I will anchor this entire stairwell against their charge!"

"Nobody gets past my shield line!"

Her skin hardened into solid stone alloy, radiating a dull grey luster as the first wave of hounds charged down the steps.

"Hold the line on the lower landing!" Vasa yelled, thrusting both palms forward to unleash a torrent of freezing blue energy.

A thick layer of frictionless black ice coated the entire marble staircase, sending the front rank of charging beasts skidding out of control.

"They are slipping on the steps!" the plant user cheered, raising her hands to channel mana into the floor cracks.

"Entangling Vines... bind them all right now!"

"Pull them down to the risers!"

"Tighten the thorns around their ankles!"

"Keep them from leaping over the railing!"

Thorned creeper vines erupted through the steps, wrapping tightly around the flailing limbs of twelve scrambled hounds.

"Strike now while their formation is shattered!" the First Player bellowed, surging forward with his Corrosive Acid Spear leveled.

"Clear the first floor landing!"

"On it!" the dark-haired striker called out, bounding forward with fierce momentum.

"I will take the ones on the railing!"

"Don't leave a single one alive!"

Beside him, the striker moved like a phantom, her acid-coated industrial blade flashing through the dim stairwell light.

She severed the Achilles tendons of two trapped hounds in a single fluid spin, dropping them to their bellies in agonizing shrieks.

"Two down on the right flank!" she shouted, pivoting to drive her blade through a third beast's throat.

The green acid paste sizzled violently on contact, dissolving the monster's neck cartilage in a shower of corrosive sparks.

"Fatal Strike... execute!"

The First Player activated `[Shadow Stride]`, vanishing in a burst of dark purple spatial particles from the second landing.

He reappeared instantly behind three Alpha hounds on the upper landing, thrusting his corrosive spear through the lead Alpha's spine.

The critical damage multiplier detonated with a thunderous crack, obliterating the Alpha's armored vertebrae in one single blow.

[ Critical Hit! Fatal Strike Applied: 420 Physical Damage + Acid Dissolution ]

[ Hostile Slayed: Alpha Gobdog (Rank E-) | Experience Value: +40 EXP ]

"One Alpha dead on the second landing!" the First Player called down, spinning his spear to meet the second beast.

"Watch the third floor stairwell... another pack is charging down!" the frost mage shouted, projecting a wall of frost across the banister.

The charging hounds collided with the barrier, their claws sliding helplessly as they tumbled over the railing into the stairwell abyss.

"Emilia, catch them on the lower landing!" the First Player ordered.

"Thorn spikes ready on the ground floor!" the plant girl answered, summoning a forest of wooden spikes below.

"Let gravity do the hard work for us!"

"Watch them impale themselves!"

"They are dropping right onto the stakes!"

The falling beasts were impaled on the sharp wooden stakes, dying instantly in a chorus of screeching yelps.

"That is six more dead hounds!" the defensive fighter cheered, crushing another beast beneath her granite palms.

"The ground floor is completely cleared!"

Without pausing, the First Player drew his service pistol and fired two rapid double-taps into the remaining two Alphas on his landing.

The 9mm hollow-point lead bullets punched through their unarmored eye sockets, dropping both beasts instantly in pools of dark blood.

[ Hostile Slayed: 2x Alpha Gobdog (Rank E-) | Experience Value: +80 EXP ]

[ Ammunition Remaining: 0/8 Loaded (Reloading from 16 Reserve) ]

"Mag change!" the First Player called out, dropping the empty magazine and slapping a fresh eight-round magazine into the grip.

"Reload complete... eight rounds hot in the chamber!"

"Push up to the third floor!" the dark-haired striker yelled, bounding up the steps two at a time.

"Keep the pressure on their retreat!"

"Don't let them regroup on the landing!"

Below him, Kendra absorbed a savage leap from an adult hound, catching its snapping jaws between her hardened palms.

She twisted the creature's neck with eighteen points of defensive leverage, snapping its cervical spine with a resounding crunch.

"Another one dead on the front line!" the shield girl yelled, kicking the corpse down the steps.

"My defenses are holding with zero damage!"

"Nothing penetrates this hardened stone armor!"

The dark-haired striker ducked beneath a sweeping claw strike, her eyes narrowing as a strange golden shimmer appeared across her vision.

[ Hidden Awakening Triggered: Subject 'Yeda' unlocks unique combat trait: Edge Precision (Rank F)! ]

[ Edge Precision: Automatically highlights structural weak points and armor seams on organic targets. ]

"I can see their weak points glowing red!" the striker gasped in sheer exhilaration, driving her blade into an exposed neck seam.

The blade sliced effortlessly through the beast's armored collar, severing its jugular vein in one clean, effortless stroke.

"Your trait awakened!" the First Player shouted down with a fierce grin.

"Keep pressing the assault... don't give them room to breathe!"

"This blade cuts through their armor like paper!" she shouted back, executing two more beasts in rapid succession.

"Watch the fourth floor landing... four more hounds are lunging down!" Vasa warned, releasing another frost surge.

The frost froze their paws to the marble steps, and the First Player swept through with his acid spear, decapitating the four frozen predators in two swift arcs.

"Four more down on the upper steps!" the First Player called out, wiping the blood from his spear tip.

"We have cleared thirty-five hounds in total!"

The squad moved like a well-oiled meat grinder, ascending the stairwell floor by floor in under twenty minutes of non-stop slaughter.

Vasa froze charging packs in place, Emilia anchored flailing flanks, Kendra absorbed charging impacts, while Nox and Yeda executed every target.

Thirty-five dimensional hounds lay slaughtered across the marble stairs, their dark blood pooling down the risers in crimson cascades.

"Clear the third landing!" the frontline defender bellowed, crushing the skull of the last juvenile hound against the wall.

"Every beast on these stairs is officially dead!" the frost user cheered, leaning against the banister to catch her breath.

"We wiped them all out without taking a single scratch!"

[ Subzone Quest Update: 35x Hostiles Cleared in Central Stairwell | Remaining East Wing Signatures: 5 ]

[ Total Experience Reached: 400/400 ]

[ Congratulations! You have achieved Level 5! ]

[ Stat Points Awarded: 5 Free Attribute Points (Total Banked Points: 10) ]

"Level 5 reached in under twenty minutes!" the First Player murmured, feeling his mana pool expand to one hundred and forty units.

"Ten banked stat points ready for the gate commander."

"My attribute pool is ready for any sudden boss mechanics."

The four girls leaned against the bloody banister, catching their breath while harvesting dozens of glowing beast cores from the corpses.

"Thirty-five monsters wiped out without a single casualty!" Vasa laughed, wiping sweat and melted frost from her brow.

"We just cleared three entire floors of the administrative building in record time!"

"My new trait makes cutting through their armor feel like slicing warm butter," the striker said, admiring the edge of her blade.

"That is the power of fighting alongside the First Player," the youth replied, stepping up to the fifth-floor landing.

"Only five hostile signatures remain in the entire East Wing subzone."

"Save your mana potions for the main chamber," the First Player advised, checking the green glow of his spear.

"We cannot afford to run dry midway through the queen's frenzy phase."

"I still have two full mana flasks ready to go," Vasa replied, tapping the glass vials on her belt.

"That means the boss and its elite bodyguards are right behind these doors," the defensive fighter noted, wiping her hardened knuckles.

"Let's make sure our formations are locked before we breach," the plant user suggested, tightening her supply belt.

"Vasa opens with a blizzard blast to freeze their joints," the First Player instructed, reviewing the tactical plan.

"Kendra plants the shield line, Emilia roots the flanks, and Yeda strikes the illuminated weak seams."

"Understood!" the squad answered in unison.

"I will freeze their movement the second the doors open," the frost mage promised.

"And I will ensure no beast breaks past the shield line," the defender added firmly.

"I will lock their scythes with heavy thorn coils," Emilia confirmed, readying her mana seeds.

"We will bring this boss down together!"

"Remember to watch the ceiling and flank vents during the engagement," the First Player added, adjusting his grip on the spear.

"Boss monsters always have secondary attack phases."

Suddenly, the massive double doors leading into the Central Library Sanctuary buckled outward with a deafening, thunderous boom.

Planks splintered into jagged shrapnel as a colossal shadow stepped through the smoking doorway into the torchlight.

The creature stood ten feet tall, covered in thick iron-hard chitin plates, with six razor-sharp scythe limbs clicking menacingly.

Six elite warders flanked the massive horror, their bone armor gleaming in the eerie dim light of the ruined hallway.

[ Boss Alert: The Iron Broodmother (Rank E+) | HP: 3,500/3,500 | Elite Guard: 6x Chitin Warders ]

"That is no standard hound," the striker whispered, raising her blade into a two-handed combat stance.

"Look at the size of those scythe blades on its shoulders!"

"That is the Iron Broodmother," the First Player answered, his eyes glittering with lethal anticipation.

"Prepare for a multi-phase boss raid right now!"

"Hold your ground and follow my calls!" he shouted, leveling his Corrosive Acid Spear at the monstrosity.

"We take down the warders first, then shatter the queen!"

"Let's slay this monster and take its core!" the squad roared in unison, bracing for impact.

"Charge!"

"For the First Citadel!" the striker shouted, leading the charge.
