Chapter 14 - The Duel of Sovereignty

Lightning split the midnight sky, illuminating the rain-slicked battlements of the central clocktower in blinding flashes of silver.

"He is deflecting our frontal assaults with dense blood armor!" the dark-haired striker yelled, dodging a sweeping cleave from the avatar's greatsword.

"His reaction speed is twice as fast as the Broodmother!"

"We need to break his offensive momentum before he charges another area blast!"

"His greatsword arcs are generating shockwaves that crack the battlements!"

"Time to adjust our combat parameters to match his tier," the First Player said calmly, opening his system allocation menu mid-stride.

[ Attributes Updated: Strength: 21 | Agility: 20 | Endurance: 18 | Perception: 16 | Banked Points Remaining: 5 ]

[ Maximum Mana Pool Expanded: 220 Units | Movement Velocity: +35% ]

A surge of raw vitality flooded through his veins, sharpening his vision until the falling raindrops appeared to slow in mid-air.

"Five banked points kept in reserve for emergency reactions," the youth murmured, feeling his agility synchronize with the roaring wind.

"Let's see if your puppet reflexes can keep up with twenty agility points!"

"Show me what a Rank D- projection can really do!"

"You think minor numerical adjustments can save you from divine execution?" Rexar bellowed, his crimson aura boiling with fury.

"Dread Cleave... cleave the world in two!"

The avatar lunged forward, swinging his massive bone greatsword in a devastating diagonal slash that tore through the air.

"Bait his downward recovery into the deck tiles!" the First Player called out, darting into the avatar's left flank at blinding speed.

"Step into his guard right now!"

"Draw his primary focus while I take the blind spot!"

"I am already moving into his blind spot!" the striker shouted, leaping straight toward the descending arc of the blade.

"Watch me pin this overgrown bone cleaver!"

She twisted her body in mid-air, allowing the greatsword to graze past her leather coat before driving both daggers into the crossguard.

The immense downward momentum forced the bone blade deep into the roof tiles, wedging the weapon firmly into the masonry.

"His blade is pinned in the platform for two seconds!" she cried out, balancing lightly on the avatar's armored forearm.

"Strike him from behind while he struggles to pull it free!"

"Do not let him regain his balance!"

"Shadow Stride... execute!"

The First Player vanished into a burst of purple spatial mist, reappearing directly behind the commander's neck.

He drew his service pistol with his left hand, pressing the muzzle directly against the avatar's right knee joint.

"Two rounds hot into your mobility!" the youth said coldly, pulling the trigger in rapid succession.

The twin gunshot cracks echoed through the storm as two 9mm lead hollow-points shattered the avatar's bone patella into fragments.

[ Critical Hit! Weak Point Severed: 240 Physical Damage Dealt ]

[ Ammunition Remaining: 3/8 Loaded in Active Magazine | 16 Reserve Rounds ]

Rexar roared in agony as his right knee buckled, forcing the eight-foot commander down onto one knee in the pouring rain.

"Insolent mortal parasite!" the avatar snarled, his left arm swelling with boiling crimson blood mana.

"Blood Sacrifice... incinerate this entire tower!"

Boiling veins of crimson light pulsed across the avatar's chest, threatening to detonate the entire observation deck in a self-destructive explosion.

"His mana core is overloading with unstable blood energy!" the striker warned, leaping backward across the cracked platform.

"He is trying to take the entire building down with him in a suicide blast!"

"Get clear of the blast radius!" the First Player yelled, raising his spear to channel a defensive barrier.

"Fall back to the stairwell threshold!"

"Not on my watch!" a furious voice rang out from the lower stairs.

Vasa burst onto the high platform, both hands radiating blinding glacial light as she channeled her final mana reserve into a single spell.

"Glacial Rime... freeze his casting arm solid right now!"

"Nobody is destroying our refuge tonight!"

A spiraling vortex of sub-zero frost slammed into Rexar's left shoulder, encasing his entire casting arm in three feet of solid blue ice.

The boiling crimson runes crackled and died instantly under the extreme freezing temperature, stopping the detonation sequence cold.

"His casting arm is frozen for five seconds!" the frost mage yelled, dropping to one knee from sudden mana exhaustion.

"Finish this monster before the ice thaws!"

"Take his head while he is locked in place!"

"Fatal Strike... maximum power!"

The First Player channeled sixty points of mana into his Corrosive Acid Spear, igniting the weapon with a blazing aura of dark purple destructive energy.

He leaped twenty feet into the air, using his twenty points of agility to vault above the howling storm winds.

With absolute precision, the youth drove the spearhead straight downward into the avatar's exposed throat.

The spear penetrated the bone neck collar, driving deep through the creature's spinal column and pinning the avatar to the central clocktower spire.

The green acid paste detonated inside the avatar's throat cavity, dissolving the internal blood conduits in an explosive shower of sparks.

[ Boss Defeated: Rexar's Ward Avatar Slain! ]

"No... this cannot be... the end of my vanguard!" the avatar gasped, his voice breaking into static as dark fluid poured down the spire.

"The Houndmaster will awaken in the depths... and consume your soul!"

"Your entire race will burn when the true gates open!"

The dying monster lunged forward in a desperate reflex, wrapping his razor-sharp claws around Yeda's collar to drag her over the parapet.

"I am taking you down into the abyss with me!" the dying avatar hissed, pulling her toward the four-story drop.

"You will perish alongside my projection!"

"Yeda!" Vasa screamed from the stairwell archway, reaching out with empty hands through the rain.

"Hold on!" Kendra's voice roared as the defender charged across the deck with thundering steps.

"Ironhide... maximum grip!"

Kendra dove across the slick tiles, catching the striker's wrist with both hands just as her feet slipped over the ledge.

"I've got you!" the defender shouted, planting her feet against the battlements to absorb the falling momentum.

"Nox, sever this blood conduit right now!"

"He is pulling with all his remaining dead weight!"

"Void Pierce... sever!"

The First Player channeled his remaining combat mana into his spear, slicing through the avatar's severed wrist in a blinding flash of purple spatial energy.

The blood link shattered instantly, and the headless torso of the avatar fell into the dark courtyard below.

"Pull her up onto the deck!" the youth called out, rushing to assist Kendra at the railing.

Together, they pulled the striker back onto the solid platform, collapsing together in a breathless heap as the rain poured over them.

"That was way too close for comfort," she gasped, wiping rain and monster fluid from her forehead with a shaky laugh.

"Thank you, Kendra."

"My grip was slipping on the wet parapet for a second there!"

"Nobody in our squad falls off this roof tonight," the defender grinned, releasing her grip with a loud sigh of relief.

"We stick together and we survive together!"

With a final shuddering convulsion across the spire, the remaining fragments of Rexar's ward avatar dissolved into swirling clouds of amber particles that drifted across the battlements.

"Level 10 reached in a single night of non-stop warfare!" the First Player whispered, feeling his entire core thrum with overwhelming power.

"Twenty unspent stat points banked and ready for my upcoming class selection."

"The East Wing is officially liberated from the dimensional horde!"

"We cleared the entire subzone in under six hours!"

As the radiant particles settled onto the rain-swept roof, two extraordinary objects materialized on the central sundial.

A shimmering Golden Skill Scroll hovered alongside a pulsating crystal known as the East Wing Territory Beacon.

[ Legendary Drop: Golden Skill Scroll (Rank E) | East Wing Subzone Territory Beacon ]

The youth walked over to the sundial, collecting the scroll and storing it carefully inside his coat pocket.

"We actually won the summit battle against a Rank D- commander," the striker whispered, stepping up beside him with a breathless smile.

"Look at the phase barrier around the East Wing... it is completely dissolving!"

"Every corridor on the east side of campus is glowing with golden light!"

Below them, the shimmering purple energy dome that previously locked down the East Wing shattered into millions of sparkling motes of light.

For the first time since the Cataclysm began, the corridors and halls of the school's eastern refuge were completely free of dimensional monsters.

"You fought brilliantly on that ledge," the youth said softly, turning to face the dark-haired girl amidst the fading rain.

"Your crossguard pin gave me the exact two-second window needed to shatter his knee."

"Without that pin, his greatsword would have severed our front line."

"I saw the opening and trusted you to finish the sequence," she answered with a quiet nod.

"In a split-second exchange, hesitation gets you killed."

"You never hesitated for even a fraction of a heartbeat."

"We make a terrifying combat duo, First Player," she answered, her dark eyes gleaming with fierce pride.

"I wouldn't want to fight at anyone else's side in this new world."

"You and I are going to conquer this entire city together."

"Step by step, sector by sector," the youth agreed.

"Neither would I," the youth replied with a rare genuine smile.

"Look down at the campus courtyard," Vasa called out, pointing over the western railing toward the front entrance.

"The military vehicles outside the main gates are flashing their headlights!"

"They have at least six armored personnel carriers parked along the perimeter boulevard!"

"Their searchlights are sweeping across the clocktower windows!" Kendra added, resting her hands on her tower shield.

"They think they can sweep in and seize our hard-won territory without fighting a single hound."

"They must have seen the barrier collapse from their perimeter positions," Emilia noted, leaning against the parapet.

"They will probably try to march in and take over the campus."

"They will demand that we surrender our weapons and submit to martial law."

"Let them try," the First Player said coldly, placing his palm firmly onto the floating territory beacon.

"This refuge belongs to the people who bled to clear it, not to politicians who hid behind barricades."

"If they want our territory, they will have to pry it from our cold hands."

Suddenly, a deep tremor pulsed from deep beneath the school grounds, echoing through the bedrock beneath their feet.

The true Dungeon Warden remained alive in the dark subterranean core, biding its time until the next phase of the Cataclysm began.

"Rexar's true body is still waiting below," the youth noted, looking down at the vibrating courtyard.

"His core is resting beneath hundreds of feet of solid earth."

"Let him wait in the dark," the striker declared, resting her hand on the hilt of her blade.

"When he rises, we will be ready to take his true core too."

"We will crush him just like we crushed his avatar tonight."

"First, we secure our sovereign ground against all outside threats," the First Player said, stepping toward the glowing territory beacon.

"Tomorrow morning, humanity takes its first real stand against the apocalypse."

"We will establish our laws and build an impregnable sanctuary."

"Lead the way, sovereign," she replied softly, watching him raise his hand toward the breaking dawn.

"We follow the First Player to the very end!" the squad echoed in unison, their voices ringing across the liberated campus.
