HeroDude Kage: Chapter 26
Meanwhile...
We see a white four-door Nissan stuck in some traffic. Honks fill in the air in every direction.
Inside the car, we see Quadeem in the driver's seat holding the wheel with one hand with Abigail in the passenger seat looking out the window. While Jamila sits in the back playing on her tablet… Until she scrolls to a post saying:
"BREAKING NEWS: Detroit Institute Of Arts AMBUSHED by a Reality Sorcerer! It appears that this Sorcerer has the power to control paint as paint marks are all over the victims.
Jamila covers her mouth in shock and disgust and quickly sends the post over to Kage.
Meanwhile Abigail looks over to the steering wheel and notices how Quadeem is driving.
"What do I tell you about driving with one hand. You know I don't like that"
"Mom. I've been driving for how many years now?"
"Two years and that's not a lot."
"Two years and not a single car crash. Besides, Mom. you know kids only drive with two hands before they get their license."
"Always something with you kids huh?"
"Mom… I'm a good driver. We'll be fine. Besides, the cars are barely moving."
Abigail looks forward and leans back.
"Yeah…"
A few minutes pass by with no words. Until Abigail breaks the silence.
"You haven't talked much about the College we visited."
"Yeah well… kinda stopped thinking about it after the five grocery stores we visited afterwards. And plus, I'm kinda tired."
Abigail smirks and shakes her head.
"You always tired ever since you got the morning job. You're starting to be just like your dad. We'll be lucky if he's even awake when we get home."
Quadeem lets out a light chuckle.
"You sure you love Dad, Mom?"
"Of course I do! Me and him we just like to joke around. He's probably out there talking about how I take too long in stores—which isn't true at all."
She turns to Jamila.
"Right, Jamila?"
Jamila looks up, then looks right back down at her tablet. Abigail smacks her lips and looks to Quadeem.
"Quadeem, you know I don't take too long in stores, right?"
Quadeem looks at Abigail and looks back at the road.
"Anyways, about the college… to be honest, Mom… I'm not really feeling it."
Abigail tilts her head.
"Why is that? it looks like good college. We checked all the buildings and they all seemed nice."
Quadeem shakes his head
"It's not that, it's just… it's just not for me."
Abigail raises a brow.
"I don't get it… why?
Quadeem places his palm on his face.
"I mean… don't get me wrong it's a great campus and all. But… it's more than the campus. It's this whole place for real. It's just… Ever since we moved here cause of your new job it just never felt like home."
Abigail leans back again.
"Quadeem. How many times we gotta talk about this. We have a great house, this place has great schools. This is better then home. What about friends? Did you make any?"
"No mom. Not me or Kage. Pops didn't meet anyone new. Have you mom? You have anyone that you can call a friend and not a co-worker?"
Abigail looks down.
"No… but… sometimes when you want to be successful you need to travel. You can't stay in one place all the time no matter how comfortable it is. What if you have a wife and kids? You can't stay with us. This is… just a part of life.
Quadeem lays his head on his palm.
"I guess mom."
The traffic lightens up and the cars start moving again.
"We should probably talk about something else."
"Yeah"
Abigail glances at Quadeem.
"So. What's up with Kage…or HeroDude?"
"Oh gosh."
"What? You know what happened yesterday. He was all over the internet!"
"Yeah… I know."
"And you're fine with it?"
"No I'm not… Kage's still young and he has a lot to learn. He'll figure it out."
Abigail smacks her lips.
"You know he shouldn't be out there… he should be living a normal life and have normal dreams."
Quadeem remains silent.
"and I know you agree with me. Cause of that little deal we had."
"Mom…"
"What? We agreed that the only reason that you're helping out Kage is because you're gonna show him that this isn't the life that he wants."
Quadeem tries to speak but nothing comes out.
"Talk to me son"
"I know you want Kage safe. We all do. And I know the only reason you were fine with Kage being a hero is because you thought he was gonna see that this isn't the life he wants to live… but I gotta be honest. I don't think that is happening. Even if I did try to talk him out—"
Abigail cuts him off.
"So you didn't try?"
Quadeem shakes his head.
"Quadeem you know our deal! You're supposed to get him to stop being a hero. Not be his sidekick."
"I know Mom... I'll uh. See what I can do."
"Good."
It's silent once again. Until Abigail breaks the tension.
"I'm sorry it's just… I'm worried about my son."
"I know Mom. I know."
