Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE

The pregnancy test had two pink lines.

In my purse was a ring box I'd been saving for 3 months.

Today was supposed to be perfect.

Today I was going to tell **Alex** I was pregnant. With twins.

I rode the elevator to the 40th floor of **Carter Group**. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"**Mr. Carter** is in a meeting," the secretary said.

"It's important," I whispered. "It's about us. About our family."

The door was cracked open.

I heard his voice before I saw him. Tired. Broken.

"I don't have a choice. If I don't marry her, my stepbrother takes everything."

A woman laughed. Cold. Triumphant.

"Then stop wasting time, **Alex**. The engagement is tomorrow."

The ring box in my purse felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.

Two babies.

And the man I loved was about to marry someone else.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream.

I turned around and walked away.

---

Nine months later, with $40 and a bus ticket, **Miranda** ran.

Far. To a new city where no one knew her name.

Her heart was breaking, but her hands were steady.

She put **Pearl** inside a baby carrier. Underneath, she tucked a little note:

*"God's Gift. Please love her."*

**Miranda** set the carrier in front of the big gate and ran to hide behind a tree.

The front door opened.

A woman stepped out first. **Vanessa**. Beautiful. Confused.

"**Alex**? There's a baby here."

Footsteps. Then **Alex** came outside.

He looked down at the sleeping baby. His face went pale.

He picked up the note.

"God's Gift..." he whispered.

From the shadows, **Miranda** couldn't see their faces clearly.

But she saw them pick her daughter up.

She saw them carry her inside.

And **Miranda** felt something she hadn't felt all night.

Relief.

*Hopefully my poor child will be safe.*

She didn't know what would happen to the baby she left behind.

She didn't know her other daughter was growing up in that same city.

20 years later, that lie would come back to destroy them all.
