Chapter 5 - Evolution, Phantom Skills

Several minutes later, Bob was already back in his residence. Night time had already set in, with most of the people having already returned to their homes. Demons were mostly active at night, making night the most dangerous time.

It was only after he had gotten inside the house and locked the door that Bob finally felt relieved. He had both that he might encounter a few thieves along the way, but he did not encounter any.

Now that he was here, Bob placed the spear on top of the table, before taking the skills out of the bag. The skills scrolls were not that big, only the size of an adult's palm in terms of length, and only about 15 cm in width.

The scroll did not possess any writings on it, other than the title of the skill that was contained within the skill scroll. This level of ability in creating the skill scrolls was something that Bob did not understand.

But that was one thing that he understood, skill scrolls were definitely created by superior beings. And this was something that made him wonder, just what was the origin of those ruins that kept on popping up within this world?

Those ruins only allowed humans to access them, implying that they were meant for humans. This was proved by the fact that only humans could learn the skills that were contained within the skill scrolls.

It seemed that there was something deeper about those ruins. And considering that it was an opportunity for the humans, it was no wonder that demons always appeared in the areas near those ruins. This was just to prevent humans from getting into the ruins and obtaining the legacy within them.

Back to the topic, Bob looked at the first skill scroll that he had purchased. It possessed the skill Silent step.

After taking a deep breath, Bob tore apart the skill scroll, and in the next moment, a bright light erupted from the torn skill scroll. That light turned into a beam that suddenly lodged itself into Bob's head through his forehead.

Bob had instinctively wanted to dodge that beam of light, but the light was too fast for him to react. And the moment that the light disappeared into his head, a huge amount of information suddenly appeared in his mind.

According to the information that appeared, this skill, silent step, had the effect of reducing the sound of foot steps. Basically, that was all the effect that this skill possessed. It was no wonder the stall owner advised him not to pick this skill.

Thankfully, Bob possessed a system. With the system, he would definitely be able to upgrade the grade of this skill.

Bob thought about the system panel, and in the next moment, the holographic screen appeared in front of him.

[Name: Robert Milton

Age: 20

Power Level: Level 8 Soldier

Techniques: Crimson Vortex Sutra (Epic)

Skills: Silent step (Common.)

Divine skills/abilities:

Current skill points: ∞ ]

This time, in front of the skills section, there was an additional skill, silent step. As expected, it was in the Common tier.

Without any hesitation, Bob thought about upgrading this skill. A prompt from the system appeared in front of him in the next moment.

[Upgrade silent step? To upgrade to uncommon tier, the required number of skill points is 17. Current skill point balance: ∞]

Bob was of course not surprised by the prompt, considering that this prompt had appeared several times during the time that he was upgrading the Crimson Vortex Sutra. It was just that there was something that caught his attention this time.

It seemed that the cost for upgrading this skill was higher as compared to the one that was required for upgrading the Crimson Vortex Sutra. It was almost doubled.

Bob was quite curious, was this due to the difference of the categorizations of the skills, or due to the level of the skills? For now, Bob did not have any answer to this question, so he went ahead and accepted the upgrade. In any case, the cost for upgrading the skills did not matter to him as he had infinite skill points that he could use.

[Upgrading... Upgrade completed.]

Bob looked at the system panel, where silent step had been upgraded to Veil of Stillness. At the same time, the information about this skill appeared in his mind.

According to the information, the effect of activating this skill was to reduce the chances of being detected when motionless, and it had a slight aura suppression.

This was definitely an improved version as compared to the previous silent step. But even then, this skill was definitely not effective on a battlefield, and neither did it have the effect that he wanted of hiding his power level.

Previously when he ventured out, he was lucky that he did not encounter any high level awakened. Otherwise, they would have been able to easily tell that he was already a level 8 soldier.

While it was not a crime to possess high power level, due to his age and appearance, he was definitely going to attract quite some attention to himself. And that was something that Bob did not want, mostly during the time that he was just starting to get stronger.

If he ended up attracting the attention of someone whose power level was at a level that he could not handle, he would definitely be in trouble. It was impossible for him to reveal anything about the system, so, it was better to take precautions.

Bob did not stop at that, as he continued with the upgrade. The next upgrade cost 10 times the initial upgrade cost, which was 170 skill points.

The skill was then upgraded to Ghostskin, which had the effect of reducing noise while moving, and scent emission masking. It also had the ability of camouflaging the body to match the surroundings. But the skill would be the deactivated if the person moved.

Finally, the skill was upgraded to Phantom Veil. Phantom Veil had the effect of inducing partial invisibility, masking the presence of a person from any form of magical detection, spells and scanners.

But of course, this invisibility was limited, as considering that detection skills of the same level could easily expose the person using the skill. Apart from that, this skill could be activated while in motion.

But of course, moving at a higher speed increased the chances of being exposed. Moreover, this state could not be infinitely maintained. It could only be active for 30 minutes. But the good thing was that there was no cool down duration, which made the 30 minutes activation restriction seem… useless?

Regardless, the moment that the skill was upgraded to the Epic tier and led to partial invisibility, Bob was quite satisfied.

Even though he did not get what he wanted, at least this increased the chances of his survival. Now, while venturing out of the stronghold, he could avoid many unnecessary troubles.

Additionally, for the low level demons, it would be impossible for them to be able to detect him. That implied that he would be capable of hunting easily.

Feeling excited, Bob went to head and took the other skill scroll. Just like the previous skill scroll, this skills scroll only had the name of the skill that it possessed.

Without hesitation, Bob tore the scroll, and a beam of light surged from the torn scroll, and into his forehead. This time, Bob did not dodge, after experiencing the first one.

The information about Piercing Thrust appeared in his mind. This was a skill that involved a forward thrust based on precision. It could increase the damage caused by 5%. But the higher the power level, the lower the percentage of increase.

[Upgrade Piercing Thrust? To upgrade to Uncommon tier, the required number of skill points is 30. Current skill point balance: ∞]

Bob raised his brows slightly upon seeing the price of upgrading the skill. The price was almost two times the one that was required to upgrade silent step, and three times for the energy absorption technique.

Despite the surprise, Bob went ahead and did the upgrade. The Uncommon tier skill was called Serpent fang. It increased the speed and fluidity of attack, leading to a rapid chain of attacks. Each move resembled a striking snake.

For the Rare tier, it was upgraded to Gale Lance. This infused thrusts with wind force, extending the reach of the attack slightly. The wind force was in the form of blades, which could deal damage.

The final upgrade was called Phantom Thrust. This was at the Epic tier, which had the effect of producing after-images. The illusions created had the effect of confusing the opponent, but more than that, each of the illusions created could cause slight damage, 10% of the total damage that could be built by the original attack.

As the memories of the spear skill settled in his mind, Bob felt that his strength had increased. Even though his power level remained the same, his combat power had definitely improved by a considerable margin.

At the same time, Bob felt as though he had been practicing with a spear for a very long time. Even though he only possessed the concept of this spear skill, his basics about spearmanship had definitely been improved as well.

Bob could not help but yearn for more skill scrolls. It was just that at the moment, he did not have enough money to be able to purchase anymore skill scrolls. Otherwise, he would have definitely looked for more, such as those that improved his defense and so on.

Grumble!

It was only at this moment that Bob was suddenly reminded of the fact that he had not yet eaten anything other than the rice that he had taken before. And the worst thing was the fact that due to the excitement, he did not purchase anything else when he was at the market.

Now, inside the house, there was nothing that could be cooked, as he had already cooked the remaining rice. After hesitating for a moment, Bob had no other choice but to go out of the house, to see if there was any shop or stall that was open at the moment.
