Serein's beautiful weekend had been utterly ruined, all because of a sudden Gate breach that dragged her into a whirlwind of chaos.
It would have been wonderful if she could simply sprawl at home afterward, cocooned in her sheets. But reality was less forgiving. She still needed to eat. She still needed to pay bills.
Monday morning came. The first day of the week, when the city's pulse tightened, its people pressed against each other in suffocating subway cars.
Serein hated the subway. Perhaps, once she finished paying off her apartment, she would save for a car of her own.
For today, she would borrow Clara's.
Clara had promised to swing by for it after her mission, but exhaustion must have pulled her straight into bed. So Serein would return the car after work instead.
Life seemed to have settled back into its usual rhythm. As though those two days with Kai—every frantic, terrifying moment—had been nothing more than a nightmare she had woken from.
